It was just a casual outing, so Nancy and I hadn't brought any guards. We never imagined running into someone this brazen.

The smiles vanished from our faces.

After her mate's death, my mother-in-law Nancy had single-handedly held the Silver Moon Pack together, raising her son Damien from a pup into the pack's fiercest warrior before handing him the Alpha title.

As the former Luna, her pride wouldn't let her stoop to arguing with this she-wolf. She simply gave her one cold look.

"You're an Omega who doesn't even have a wolf. You're not fit to speak in my presence."

"Get out of my sight before I get angry."

Without sparing the she-wolf another glance, Nancy gently patted my hand.

"Aria, don't let her ruin our day. Let's keep going. Tonight, I'll make Damien answer for this."

The she-wolf trembled with rage as she watched us walk away.

"You'll regret crossing me!"

She glared at our retreating figures and beckoned toward the distance. A shadow materialized before her, voice dripping with flattery.

"Miss Vivienne, how may I serve you?"

Vivienne jabbed a finger at our backs, her eyes vicious.

"Those two dared to humiliate me. Make them suffer."

Cain understood immediately. A dark grin spread across his face.

"Don't worry. My family has guarded this mountain for generations. Every plant here answers to me."

Cain was the offspring of a werewolf and a witch — an anomaly among wolves, but one who possessed abilities far beyond any ordinary werewolf.

He gave a casual whistle, and the vines around our feet exploded to life, coiling around our ankles.

Nancy was caught off guard and yanked upside down into a tree. She was still powerful, but age had slowed her. The moment she shifted, Cain lashed her hard with a vine whip.

She cried out in pain. Cain tightened the vines around her throat.

Seeing Nancy about to suffocate, I shifted and threw everything I had into snapping the vines. I barely reached them before Cain slammed his claws into my back.

The claws raked deep, leaving bloody gashes. The pain nearly blinded me.

When he lunged again, I shifted back to human form to dodge, then extended my claws and drove them into his gut.

He doubled over, howling. I seized the chance to free Nancy.

Her face was ashen, angry red welts circling her neck.

For years, she'd overseen every affair of the Silver Moon Pack. She was the most respected Former Luna among all werewolves.

And now she'd been brutalized by some nobody.

Her fury was barely contained.

"How dare you attack us here. You've broken Silver Moon Pack law!"

"I will have you thrown in prison!"

Vivienne's shrill laughter cut through the air.

"Prison? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard."

"Do you know who I am? My mate is the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack. Even if I killed you both, nobody would dare say a word!"

There was only one Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack — my mate, Damien.

Yet she kept insisting she was his mate.

Had Damien truly betrayed me?

I steadied Nancy, then turned to Vivienne with narrowed eyes.

"Your mate is Damien?"

Triumph flickered across her face.

"I'm surprised a lowly Omega like you even knows his name."

"Now you see who you're dealing with. Get on your knees and beg, and maybe I'll let you live."

"Otherwise, neither of you is leaving this mountain."

A sharp, suffocating ache spread through my chest. My throat went dry.
