The she-wolf trembled with rage as she watched us walk away.

She glared at our retreating figures and beckoned toward the distance. A shadow materialized before her, voice dripping with flattery.

"Miss Vivienne, how may I serve you?"

Vivienne jabbed a finger at our backs, her eyes vicious.

"Those two dared to humiliate me. Make them suffer."

Cain understood immediately. A dark grin spread across his face.

"Don't worry. My family has guarded this mountain for generations. Every plant here answers to me."

He gave a casual whistle, and the vines around our feet exploded to life, coiling around our ankles.

Nancy was caught off guard and yanked upside down into a tree. She was still powerful, but age had slowed her. The moment she shifted, Cain lashed her hard with a vine whip.

She cried out in pain. Cain tightened the vines around her throat.

Seeing Nancy about to suffocate, I shifted and threw everything I had into snapping the vines. I barely reached them before Cain slammed his claws into my back.

The claws raked deep, leaving bloody gashes. The pain nearly blinded me.

When he lunged again, I shifted back to human form to dodge, then extended my claws and drove them into his gut.

He doubled over, howling. I seized the chance to free Nancy.
