Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Nameless
Scott's POV

That same day, Yolanda got Dad's contact information, broke off her engagement, and went after him.

Yolanda was beautiful enough to rival a movie star, and she knew how to win Dad over. It took only a few months for the two of them to get married.

After the wedding, my grandfather, Robert Carson, got her a job at Carson Group. She soon became a manager, and after I was born, she was transferred to headquarters and promoted to executive director.

When Grandpa retired because of his health, Yolanda took his place as chairman.

The day Grandpa died, she dropped her act and showed her true colors.

"Paul, I'll be honest with you. I only married you because your dad owned Carson Group," she said.

"Now that Robert is dead, your family can't do anything for me anymore. There's no reason for me to stay."

Dad begged her through his tears not to leave.

Yolanda had the nerve to ask him, "When you took me away from another man, did you think about what you were doing to him?

"Back then, Karl had to let me go for the sake of my future. But over the past 15 years, he has tried to kill himself several times. If I hadn't gotten there in time, I might never see him again.

"Paul, you can't be so selfish. I've already given you the best years of my life. What more do you want? Are you still going to stand between us?"

That was when Dad realized that the woman he had cherished had never loved him. He let Yolanda go and gave her the chance to be with her former fiance, Karl Zeller.

The next day, Yolanda used the Carson family's money to buy Karl a house to make up for leaving him all those years ago. She even went out of her way to take Karl's son, Winston, as her godson.

Using her influence, she transferred Winston from the worst high school in town to the best class at the city's top high school.

As for me, all it took was Winston saying he didn't want to see me at school. Yolanda forced me to study in the worst high school in town instead.

Dad didn't want my future ruined, so he took me to confront Yolanda several times.

But she said I was mediocre to begin with and had only gotten into the top high school because of her. She even made sure the better high schools in town knew not to accept me.

Whenever my former teacher secretly brought me practice tests, he couldn't hide how heartbroken he was over what had happened to me.

"You were the top student in your grade," he said. "Now, you're stuck in a place like this. How could any mother do this to her son?"

Then, he shook his head and sighed. "As for Yolanda's godson, Winston, he's just not good at school. She told all his teachers to give him extra help, but you can't teach someone who refuses to learn."

I felt a pang in my chest. I thanked my teacher and hurried back to the classroom to study.

Yolanda could try to ruin me, but I wasn't about to give up on myself.

…

"Scott Carson, your father's remains have been cremated. Please come this way to collect his ashes."

The urn was small and square.

I couldn't accept that Dad, who used to carry me on his shoulders and had always seemed larger than life, was now in this little box.

I wiped the tears from my face and took him home one last time.

I thought, "Wherever you are, Dad, don't forget the way home."

…

Early the next morning, I gathered my things and prepared to go choose a burial plot for Dad.

When I opened the door, two police officers were standing outside.

"Are you Scott Carson? We've received a report that your father, Paul Carson, bribed someone to falsify your SAT scores. You're coming with us for questioning."

Scott's POVWinston kicked the door like a madman, determined to break it down and kill me.Suddenly, an alarm went off downstairs.Winston was still young, and the sound sent him into a panic. He fled down the fire stairs. The same day, two videos spread across social media. The first showed a teenager riding a motorcycle. He crashed through a guardrail by the river and fell into the water. When they fished him out, he was already dead. The teenager was believed to have been Winston Zeller, the student at the center of the cheating scandal in Jeston. The second showed a middle-aged man rushing to the river and breaking down in tears. Moments later, he plunged a knife into his own chest and died despite emergency treatment.Under intense public pressure, the police quickly solved the case using forensic methods. Someone else had indeed been sitting in Winston's seat during the SAT. The person who was paid to take the test on Winston's behalf was soon arrested. The investiga

Scott's POVPeople online started calling me their inspiration. Now that I had everyone's attention, I moved on to the next part of my plan.I exposed Winston online for hiring someone to take the SAT for him, with Yolanda, chairwoman of Carson Group, acting as his accomplice.I also posted his awful grades from all three years of high school. He barely passed most of his classes. The story quickly sparked public outrage, especially among high school seniors and their parents."Sure, regular grades aren't everything. But with scores like that, suddenly coming out on top of the SAT is an insult to all the kids who actually worked for it!""Exactly. There are geniuses in this world, but I don't believe anyone can suddenly become one on one of the biggest tests of their life!""As they say, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. The truth will always prevail!""The fact that this kid had to speak out online proves the local authorities can't be trusted. This ne

Scott's POV"Karl specifically asked me to bring you home so we can all take care of you for a while," Yolanda said. "He also said you and Winston got into the same college, so when school starts, we'll take you both there together!"Her smile faded when I continued to ignore her. She put on a pitiful expression. "Scott, please. Give me a chance to make things right, okay?"Watching her act so helpless, I knew she had an ulterior motive. After all, even when she was living with us before, she rarely ever humbled herself. No matter who was right or wrong, Dad and I always had to apologize, placate her, and do whatever it took to make her happy.Poor Dad had given all his love to a woman who never deserved it."Ms. Quinn, don't waste your tears," I said. "I'm not Karl, so I won't fall for them."Yolanda tried to argue. "Scott, you just hate me because I left you and Paul. But all I did was pursue my own happiness. What's wrong with that?"Karl was only protecting me from getting

Scott's POV"Open your eyes and take a good look. My father, Paul Carson, died eight days ago," I said. "It was on the very same day I called you."I'm here today to take care of the paperwork for his death. If you still don't believe me, ask the officers to check the records."Yolanda looked at me in disbelief. "Karl told me you and Paul were just trying to get me to feel sorry for you. He saw Paul getting you discharged from the hospital.""Is that so? Then, how do you explain him throwing Dad's urn into the trash?" I asked."Impossible! Karl would never do something like that," Yolanda said."Do you want to see the security footage? It's crystal clear. You can see that shameless bastard Karl in every frame!" I said.Yolanda turned to the police. "Officer, is Paul really dead?""According to these documents, there's no doubt about it," the officer replied.Yolanda stood there in a daze for a moment, then crouched in front of me. "Scott, how have you managed all these days by

Scott's POVKarl rushed over and pounded on the door. "Scott, don't make up lies about us! I was at the hospital yesterday, and I saw Paul getting you discharged and taking you home in a wheelchair.""If you're seeing dead people, I guess your time is almost up too," I retorted.Yolanda started to say something else, but I backed my wheelchair away and slammed the inner door shut in their faces.I could practically picture Yolanda's face turning beet red with rage as she cursed and pounded on the door nonstop. But a few security guards soon showed up and kicked them out.A neighbor in the homeowners' group chat wrote, "Those two have no decency!"I liked a few comments and replied, "And she calls herself a chairwoman. She has absolutely no class!"…Dad didn't smoke or drink. His only hobby was watching soccer.Tonight was the Erolean Championship final. I turned on the TV so Dad and I could watch one last soccer game together. His voice echoed in my head."Scott, the goal

Scott's POVThat evening, someone pounded on my front door.I opened the inner door and faced Yolanda and Karl through the locked security screen door.Yolanda got the first word in. "Scott, how dare you go to the media to expose me and file a police report against me?"You ingrate! Have you learned nothing after all these years? If I hadn't given birth to you and raised you, you wouldn't even be here!"She didn't stop there. "Students from that high school are either street thugs or kids who barely scrape through and end up working odd jobs. "And you expect me to believe you got into Havorton University? Anyone would be suspicious! I was just checking into you before I ended up taking the blame for everything just because I'm your mother!"I laughed. "So you know that school is terrible too, Yolanda?"You used your status as my mother to force me out of the city's top high school and into that dump. You did it because you hated Dad and me."You just wanted to watch me, as Pa
