Scott's POV

Across the street from the hospital, the city's top high school was in the middle of a huge graduation celebration, with music blaring and cheers filling the air.

The star of the celebration was my mother's godson, Winston Zeller. He had earned the highest SAT score in the state that year.

My mother, Yolanda Quinn, was a shareholder in the school and Winston's godmother. She proudly took the stage to present him with his award and scholarship as everyone looked on enviously.

The celebration was theirs. Just two blocks away, the hospital room was dead silent.

My father, Paul Carson, died with regrets. He wasn't able to find peace even at the very end.

Several members of the medical staff offered me their condolences. "We did everything we could. I'm so sorry for your loss."

Then, they handed me a form confirming Dad's death. "Would your mother be able to come sign this?"

I took the paper and signed my name under "next of kin".

"She can't. She's at the celebration across the street," I said.

The doctor was about to say something, but the nurse, Cassie Lynch, quickly gave him a warning look. She knew firsthand how cold and dismissive Yolanda could be.

That morning, Dad's condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Cassie stayed by his bedside with me the whole time.

Knowing his time was running out, Dad finally said what he had been keeping inside for so long. "Scott, I want… to see your mom one last time."

I couldn't bear to let him die with that regret, so I forced myself to call Yolanda.

But she said, "What? Is seeing me going to bring him back to life? Why is he still hanging on? If he's going to die, then let him die already! Don't waste my time."

Cassie couldn't just stand by. She took the phone and made one last attempt. "Ma'am, Paul's condition has gotten much worse. His doctor has declared him critical. We need you to—"

Yolanda cut her off, "You just want money, don't you? The Carsons are rotten to the core. Paul's a hopeless loser, and Scott is a good-for-nothing punk. How dare you even call me?"

Then, she hung up.

When I called her again, she had already blocked my number.

"Forget it. It doesn't matter if I ever see her again," Dad whispered. "Scott, don't hate your mother."

Tears slipped from the corners of his eyes, and Dad was gone.

I gently closed his eyes and said, "Dad, but I can't stop hating her."

…

Dad had once been a doctor.

During a school health outreach event, the hospital sent him to give physicals to elementary school students.

While she was at the school, Yolanda overheard one of Dad's coworkers taking a jab at him. "Your dad owns a big company, and you chose to be a doctor?"

Moments later, he plunged a knife into his own chest and died despite emergency treatment.Under intense public pressure, the police quickly solved the case using forensic methods. Someone else had indeed been sitting in Winston's seat during the SAT. The person who was paid to take the test on Winston's behalf was soon arrested. The investiga

Scott's POVPeople online started calling me their inspiration. Now that I had everyone's attention, I moved on to the next part of my plan.I exposed Winston online for hiring someone to take the SAT for him, with Yolanda, chairwoman of Carson Group, acting as his accomplice.I also posted his awful grades from all three years of high school. He barely passed most of his classes. The story quickly sparked public outrage, especially among high school seniors and their parents."Sure, regular grades aren't everything. But with scores like that, suddenly coming out on top of the SAT is an insult to all the kids who actually worked for it!""Exactly. There are geniuses in this world, but I don't believe anyone can suddenly become one on one of the biggest tests of their life!""As they say, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. The truth will always prevail!""The fact that this kid had to speak out online proves the local authorities can't be trusted. This ne

Scott's POV"Karl specifically asked me to bring you home so we can all take care of you for a while," Yolanda said. "He also said you and Winston got into the same college, so when school starts, we'll take you both there together!"Her smile faded when I continued to ignore her. She put on a pitiful expression. "Scott, please. Give me a chance to make things right, okay?"Watching her act so helpless, I knew she had an ulterior motive. After all, even when she was living with us before, she rarely ever humbled herself. No matter who was right or wrong, Dad and I always had to apologize, placate her, and do whatever it took to make her happy.Poor Dad had given all his love to a woman who never deserved it."Ms. Quinn, don't waste your tears," I said. "I'm not Karl, so I won't fall for them."Yolanda tried to argue. "Scott, you just hate me because I left you and Paul. But all I did was pursue my own happiness. What's wrong with that?"Karl was only protecting me from getting

Scott's POV"Open your eyes and take a good look. My father, Paul Carson, died eight days ago," I said. "It was on the very same day I called you."I'm here today to take care of the paperwork for his death. If you still don't believe me, ask the officers to check the records."Yolanda looked at me in disbelief. "Karl told me you and Paul were just trying to get me to feel sorry for you. He saw Paul getting you discharged from the hospital.""Is that so? Then, how do you explain him throwing Dad's urn into the trash?" I asked."Impossible! Karl would never do something like that," Yolanda said."Do you want to see the security footage? It's crystal clear. You can see that shameless bastard Karl in every frame!" I said.Yolanda turned to the police. "Officer, is Paul really dead?""According to these documents, there's no doubt about it," the officer replied.Yolanda stood there in a daze for a moment, then crouched in front of me. "Scott, how have you managed all these days by

Scott's POVKarl rushed over and pounded on the door. "Scott, don't make up lies about us! I was at the hospital yesterday, and I saw Paul getting you discharged and taking you home in a wheelchair.""If you're seeing dead people, I guess your time is almost up too," I retorted.Yolanda started to say something else, but I backed my wheelchair away and slammed the inner door shut in their faces.I could practically picture Yolanda's face turning beet red with rage as she cursed and pounded on the door nonstop. But a few security guards soon showed up and kicked them out.A neighbor in the homeowners' group chat wrote, "Those two have no decency!"I liked a few comments and replied, "And she calls herself a chairwoman. She has absolutely no class!"…Dad didn't smoke or drink. His only hobby was watching soccer.Tonight was the Erolean Championship final. I turned on the TV so Dad and I could watch one last soccer game together. His voice echoed in my head."Scott, the goal

Scott's POVThat evening, someone pounded on my front door.I opened the inner door and faced Yolanda and Karl through the locked security screen door.Yolanda got the first word in. "Scott, how dare you go to the media to expose me and file a police report against me?"You ingrate! Have you learned nothing after all these years? If I hadn't given birth to you and raised you, you wouldn't even be here!"She didn't stop there. "Students from that high school are either street thugs or kids who barely scrape through and end up working odd jobs. "And you expect me to believe you got into Havorton University? Anyone would be suspicious! I was just checking into you before I ended up taking the blame for everything just because I'm your mother!"I laughed. "So you know that school is terrible too, Yolanda?"You used your status as my mother to force me out of the city's top high school and into that dump. You did it because you hated Dad and me."You just wanted to watch me, as Pa
