Chapter 1

My backpack was still in the car when Mom dragged me to the cistern.

The driver had barely wished me a happy Thanksgiving before she caught my wrist and led me behind the estate. A child was crying underground. I glanced through the opening, narrowed by an old metal frame, and stepped back.

Pain pulled across the incision beneath my coat. When I covered it, Mom tugged my hand away.

“Stand still. Owen is waiting.”

A man in a volunteer rescue jacket was reporting our location over his radio. He stepped between us.

“Mrs. Moretti, the specialist team is coming. We haven’t assessed the space.”

“How long will that take? Can you promise Owen has that long?”

My father ran the Moretti crime family. Several of his guards stood nearby with families who had come for dinner. Owen’s grandmother was crying in a chair while someone called his name through the opening.

Mom pushed me forward.

“Lily is eighteen. She’s small enough, and she wants to help.”

The volunteer looked at the hand I had pressed against my side again.

“Are you hurt?”

Before I could answer, Mom tightened her grip.

“She’s stiff from the drive. Lily, tell him you can do this.”

“I can’t breathe in places like that.”

He moved me behind him.

“Then you’re staying here. Everyone needs to step away from the opening.”

Mom held out her hand for her purse.

The moment I saw the black ledger, I stopped trying to explain.

Four years earlier, fifteen of my father’s men and employees had died rescuing Serena from a fire at her high school graduation party. My sister had been eighteen. I had been fourteen when Mom began recording what I owed their families.

Receipts protruded between the pages. One was from the private clinic where Dad had arranged my surgery last month.

The kidney went to the son of another man who had died saving Serena. Mom called it one more debt settled. When I asked to postpone the surgery, she opened the ledger in front of me.

She stood beside me while I signed the consent forms. Afterward, she told me the family had paid for everything, so I should be grateful. She also told me to keep the details from anyone at college.

When I asked to stay home until the incision healed, she wrote on the back of the bill:

Lily refused her responsibilities and demanded additional care.

That evening, I returned to campus with a fever. I never asked her for more pain medication.

Now she opened the ledger to Owen’s family.

“His father ran into that house knowing he had a baby at home,” she said. “Will you let his son die here?”

“He went in for Serena.”

I caught the volunteer’s sleeve as soon as I said it.

Mom uncapped her pen.

“Your sister still has nightmares. Must you make her relive it?”

A woman beside her sighed.

“It’s Thanksgiving, Lily. Don’t upset your mother.”

I watched the pen touch the page.

“Please don’t write that. I’ll help.”

The volunteer kept a hand on my shoulder.

“You can refuse. You don’t have to earn your way out of this.”

Mom began writing.

“Refused to help Owen. Caused further distress to his father’s family.”

I reached for her wrist, but she peeled my fingers away.

“I said I would, Mom.”

Owen screamed for his grandmother. As the volunteer turned toward the opening, Mom signaled a guard to bring over a coil of rope from the groundskeeper’s shed.

The volunteer caught them fastening it around me. He clipped a work light to my coat as he tried to pull me away from the rim.

“Stop. She has no training.”

A guard stepped into his path.

“Take your hands off Mrs. Moretti.”

The man immediately raised his radio, requesting police as well as the rescue team. Mom kept pushing me toward the opening.

“Go down and stay with him. He’s five.”

I tried to brace myself against the rim, but she pressed my shoulders down until I slipped beneath the frame. The wall scraped my incision, and I cried out.

The volunteer seized the rope above me, stopping my fall. He braced himself as the guard argued with him.

“Lily, find somewhere to put your feet. We’re getting you back up.”

I looked toward Mom. She was standing beside him, still holding her pen.

“I can reach him,” I pleaded. “Please don’t let her write any more.”

I reached for the little work light clipped to my coat. My fingers slipped twice before I found the switch. Above me, Mom was insisting they lower me far enough to reach Owen.

The beam swept across the wet wall. I tried to steady my breathing and looked for him.

A small voice rose from the darkness.

“Lily? Did you come to get me?”

When Dad chose clothes for my funeral, he asked my size for the first time. The housekeeper couldn’t answer. Serena brought out one of her dresses and said it could be altered. Dad looked at it, then pushed it back.“Buy something for Lily.”Several outfits arrived. He chose a pale blue dress, but when the funeral director asked about my favorite jewelry, he searched through a box and eventually closed it.I owned one thin silver chain. My roommate had given it to me for my eighteenth birthday. She brought it to Dad and explained that I rarely wore it because I was afraid of breaking it while working. He held it across his palm before asking the funeral director to put it on me.At the service, Owen came with his grandmother and placed a piece of chocolate beside my photograph.“This one didn’t get squashed.”His grandmother took his hand and apologized to Dad for thinking only of her grandson that afternoon.Dad sat in the front row, staring at the chocolate.“What else did Lily say d

Three days later, I followed Dad into the police station. He left his lawyer outside and sat across from an investigator. She handed him my discharge instructions, bearing Mom’s signature, along with the clinic’s follow-up notices. After studying them, he asked to see Mom.“We need to clarify a few other things first.”She opened an email on her computer. Attached was a photograph of bruises on my arm.I remembered that picture. The wound on my hand came from someone stepping on it. My teacher had cleaned it in her office and promised to contact my parents. At home, Dad asked why people were always picking on me.“This is from Lily’s high school,” the investigator said. “Did they contact you?”“Yes.”“What did you do?”He placed the discharge papers on the desk.“I told her to work things out with the other students.”The investigator opened a video.I was sitting on a hallway floor with books scattered around me. A boy held my backpack upside down, shaking out the contents. His father

Mom pressed her palm against my cheek, then touched my forehead and turned to Dad.“Give me your coat. She’s cold.”He took it off immediately. She spread it over me and pulled the collar close, avoiding the bloodstained areas.I stood beside the stretcher while she arranged the sleeves. The last time she had cared for me like this was before the fire. When I was sick, she used to reach beneath the blankets to check whether my feet were warm.“Lily, let’s get you to your room.”She tried to lift me, but the doctor intervened, explaining that they needed to wait for the personnel who would take custody of my body.“She can’t stay outside,” Mom said, supporting my shoulders. “Look how little she’s wearing.”My coat was in the bag nearby. She had made me wear it for three years. When the cuffs frayed last winter, I asked for a new one. She reminded me that she had just paid a widow’s rent and told me to be considerate. Now she kept gathering Dad’s coat around me. Her fingers brushed an in

Dad held the phone and looked at the officer by the door.“Why do you have her watch?”“It was removed during resuscitation. Please come outside with us.”Mom had already picked up her coat. As she passed me, she straightened the collar.“We’ll see for ourselves. Lily can barely tolerate pain. If it were that serious, the whole house would have heard her screaming.”The volunteer looked at her.“She did scream.”Mom’s fingers paused on a button before she slipped her purse over her shoulder.Serena rose to follow. Dad adjusted her shawl and told her to stay inside, but she glanced at the officers and came with them.I walked beside my family. Cables crossed the path where Mom had dragged me earlier. Floodlights illuminated the grass, and the metal frame removed from the cistern lay beside the opening. The severed rope had been placed in an evidence bag.Mom slowed when she saw it.“I only wanted her to finish what she’d started.”“Do you mean finding the toy car?” the officer asked.“I

When I saw Mom again, she was cutting turkey on Serena’s plate.I reached for her shoulder. My fingers passed through her cardigan without disturbing the shawl draped over her chair.“Mom?”She pushed the plate toward my sister and reminded her to eat slowly. Serena reached straight through me for the salt.Outside, equipment rattled across the paving. A guest glanced toward the windows.“Is Lily still out there?”“The rescue crew is handling it,” Dad said, signaling for more wine.Mom spread her napkin across her lap.“She’ll need some rest afterward. We’ll have something sent upstairs.”I touched my side. The pain was gone, and my hands were clean, though I remembered blood between my fingers. I remembered lying in the mud while someone begged me to open my eyes.My backpack stood beside the dining room door. I went to retrieve the Family Weekend brochure, but my fingers slipped through the zipper.Behind me, Serena asked, “Is she angry again?”“Eat your dinner, sweetheart.”“I’m wor

When the call connected, I brought my wrist close to my mouth.“Mom. Please help me.”Her voice reached me through the watch and from the opening above.“I’m right here. Why are you calling?”I wanted to tell her how cold I was, that I could barely keep pressure on my side. My lips moved, but all that came out was an uneven breath. The volunteer asked for her phone.“Let me speak to her.”“She can hear you.” Mom raised her voice. “Lily, sit up. You had plenty to say a minute ago.”I tried to push myself off the ground. My arm gave way, leaving my cheek against the muddy water. There was a rustle through the phone, then the volunteer’s voice.“Lily, the rescue team is here. Tap your watch if you can hear me.”I scraped a fingernail against the screen.“Good. Keep listening. Someone is coming down for you.”Brighter lights swept across the opening. I heard equipment being unloaded and a man ordering everyone back. He asked how long I had been below.“Ten or fifteen minutes,” Mom said.“L
