The next day, I went to the cafe on Bleecker. The café on Bleecker smelled like burnt sugar and wet earth, you know that sweet heavy smell of rain after a long time.

I reached there at 3:57, I pulled my hoodie up.

Mariel was already sitting at one corner of the table, with two croissants and a latte in front of her.

The croissants and latte look like a bribe to lure me in. I thought, smiling.

She didn't even smile when I came in, I adjusted the chair and sat down.

“You look like a ghost who lost a fight with insomnia.” She said.

I removed the hoodie. “Thanks” I said dramatically. As I arranged my hair that scattered when I was removing the hoodie.

She pushed the latte towards me. “Drink first. Then talk.”

Steam was coming out of the latte cup, curling in the mid air. I wrapped my hand around the cup to feel warm.

The small cut on my palm, from the broken porcelain, is already healing, it scabbed a thin line.

Mariel saw it immediately, her eyes narrowed still on it.
