Chapter 1

"What are you waiting around for?" the kidnappers roared on the video. "Transfer 100 million to us right now, or you can get ready to collect your parents' corpses!"

No sooner had the kidnapper barked out his demand than several large snakes sank their fangs into Dad's legs, and a heart-wrenching cry instantly echoed across the wedding hall.

My face went deathly pale. I trembled uncontrollably as tears streamed down my cheeks.

Most of our family business capital had long since been poured into Adrian Dickson's new project after he'd sweet-talked us into it.

Forget about 100 million—we couldn't even scrape together a million dollars right now.

I clutched the hem of Adrian's suit jacket, pleading desperately with him.

"Dree, please, save Mom and Dad first! Once they're safe—"

But before I could even finish, he cut me off impatiently and said, "So, you're not willing to do it, are you?"

He then gave my pale face a contemptuous pat before turning to the kidnappers on the screen, saying, "I don't have the money. Go ahead and kill them. I don't care."

It was as though my mind had just been struck by lightning. I screamed at the top of my lungs, completely breaking down.

"No! You can't kill them, Adrian! They're my parents! You can't be that heartless!"

A split second later, a sharp pain shot through my scalp. Adrian yanked me up by my hair with a dark expression on his face and slapped me hard across the face.

"Have you already forgotten what you did to Cassie, Jillian Hanson? A vicious woman like you actually has the nerve to call me the heartless one?"

I looked into Adrian's cold, hard eyes and felt a wave of anguish and bewilderment engulfing me.

"But I've already done everything I could to make it up to her!"

I had long regretted the mistake I'd made selfishly in a moment of impulse back then. The day Cassandra Addams dropped out of school, I sought her out to apologize personally, even using Mom's connections and spending a huge fortune to send her to a top-tier college abroad.

I continued showering her with jewelry, luxury cars, and mansions, spending nearly all of my money on her, and Cassandra accepted everything I gave her. Adrian also stopped giving me the cold shoulder and became his usual attentive and affectionate self with me after that.

I thought that the matter was already behind us. But as it turned out, it had all been nothing but a facade after all.

"Did you think that your sorry attempts at making amends could erase what happened?

"If it weren't for you, she wouldn't have become depressed and ended up alone and miserable abroad! Did you even know that she had a severe depressive episode not too long ago and tried to kill herself? She nearly died!

"It's all your fault! You owe her a debt you can never repay!"

Adrian then watched coldly as all the color drained from my face before suddenly letting go of my hair.

When I collapsed to the floor, he tilted my chin up with the tip of his polished leather shoe, deliberately humiliating me.

He spoke each word as though he were determined to crush every bit of my pride. "Do as I say, or your parents will never live to see the light of day again. Take your pick."

I looked at Mom's and Dad's faces on the giant screen, completely twisted in agony, and felt completely engulfed by a tidal wave of despair.

Finally, I broke down and sobbed, "Fine… I'll do it."

Then, I endured the strange, bewildered, and judgmental stares of the wedding guests as I raised my hand and slapped myself across the face, repeatedly saying, "I'm a bitch… I'm a bitch…"

I continued slapping myself on the stage, every last bit of the love I had for Adrian dying.

Upon hearing this, Adrian instinctively shook Cassandra off and hurried to explain himself to me."Jill! Don't listen to her nonsense! You're the only one I've ever cared about!"I listened impassively, not believing a single word he said."I don't care what kind of delusions you've got, but take that troublemaker you've brought with you and get out of my sight!"Adrian seemed stung by my stern expression. His eyes filled with panic as he tried to reach out and hold my hand, but before he could even touch me, Cassandra grabbed his hand and forcefully yanked it right back, her eyes widening incredulously."Dree! What the hell are you saying? What do you mean by saying that you only care about Jillian? Then what do you take me for?"The veins on Adrian's forehead bulged out in anger as he glared at Cassandra icily."Don't you know exactly what you are to me? I've already given you plenty of money, so why the hell did you follow me all the way here? Just get lost! And stop pushing

I shook Adrian off and retorted with a frown, "No. He's nobody relevant. Just ignore him. Let's go."With that, I ducked straight into Bob's car. However, that infuriated Adrian even more, and he stopped me from closing the car door before yanking me right back out."How dare you say I'm nobody relevant? I am your fiance, Jillian Hanson!"I replied impassively, "No, not anymore. You've already proposed to Cassandra. Why are you coming here and acting like a deranged lunatic instead of planning your wedding with her back home?"But he completely misunderstood me. He grasped at straws as he shot back in agitation, "See? I knew that you still cared about me, Jill! You're just upset that I proposed to Cassandra, aren't you?"Before I could even refute him, he hurriedly continued, "Don't worry! That was all just a sham! I never actually intended to marry her!"You left me without a word, Jill. No calls, no texts—you even refused to see me and blocked me on all your social media accoun

Mom stopped Adrian from trying to grab my hand again, yelling at him, "On what grounds? You were the one who destroyed our family and reduced us to this state. What makes you think that my daughter would still be willing to keep your child? She aborted that child a long time ago!"As she spoke, Mom took out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket and threw it in Adrian's face. My eyes widened as I turned to look at her and Dad.I had been afraid that they would get even more upset if they knew that I was pregnant, so I never told them about it. I'd also aborted the child behind their backs. I never expected that they would already know about it.I looked at the faint traces of dried tears on the paper and felt my heart ache painfully for them. I couldn't even imagine how heartbroken they must have been when they found out about it.Adrian stared at the abortion surgery report in disbelief, grasping the edges of the paper so hard that his knuckles turned white."Impossible! How c

Whenever we had free time, Mom, Dad, and I would go fishing, hiking, or to the park together. Life was rather pleasant and leisurely for us, and I rarely thought about Adrian anymore.I knew nothing about what happened in Seaview City after I left, and I certainly never expected to see Adrian again. One day, I went to the restaurant to help out after work. A few customers there tried to leave without paying their bill. During the ensuing argument, I was roughly shoved to the side and stumbled right into someone's arms.I hurriedly tried to steady myself and apologize, but in the next moment, a familiar, angry voice rang out from above me at once."Jillian Hanson! Did you even think about the baby in your belly when you were arguing with them? What if I hadn't caught you? What would have happened if you'd fallen?"I was stunned for just a moment. Then, I blurted, "Adrian Dickson? What are you doing here?"After making the troublemakers pay, Adrian turned to me with a look of displ

Photos of Adrian and Cassandra kissing under a sky full of fireworks were widely circulated by the media. Aside from that, Cassandra also often shared sweet moments of her everyday life with him on her social media account every single day.I only found out about this when I accidentally saw her stories on social media. In the photo that I saw, Cassandra was leaning on Adrian's shoulder, smiling happily at the camera while he looked down at her with a rare smile on his otherwise cold face.I stared at the photo like I was in a trance.Adrian hadn't smiled at me like that ever since that incident back then.I wasn't even surprised about the proposal either, since he liked Cassandra so much and had just reunited with her. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore anyway. After calming myself down, I decisively logged out and deleted all of my social media accounts. That was also why I didn't know about what happened just three days after that.It was the day of the

Mom and I were just about to board the plane when I got a call from Adrian."Jillian Hanson! What the hell are you doing? Do you even have any idea what you just sent me?"He seemed so furious that even his voice was trembling uncontrollably. The sight of the fetus had unsettled him just as I'd intended, but for some reason, I couldn't feel happy about it.It struck me at that moment rather incongruously that his reaction was actually laughable. He was acting as though he actually cared about that child."Can't you tell what it is? That's your baby, Adrian."Before I could go on, he cut me off, his breathing ragged as he exploded in rage, "What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Did you really think you could get a hold over me just by finding some aborted fetus in the trash and sending it my way?"Get over here and apologize at once! If not, you can forget about your parents' company completely!"I listened calmly to him and responded flatly, "Oh, okay. I'll forget about it. Go
