Chapter 3 The Night Everything Changed

Penulis: Veggie Sprout
That afternoon, Cecilia came by as usual to bring me some water, but she looked unusually flustered. "Ellie, I think I just saw Silas hanging around outside the practice rooms. There was something really unsettling about the way he was looking around."

My heart skipped a beat. Silas had kept his distance for a while after Cecilia talked him into leaving me alone last time. I hadn't expected him to show up again.

Cecilia took my hand, her voice soothing. "Don't be scared, Ellie. I'll take you out through the back door so we can avoid him. The finals are what matter right now. There's no need to invite trouble when you're so close to the finish line."

I looked at her gratefully. For a moment, I even wondered if I'd been wrong to suspect her before.

After gathering my sheet music, I followed her quietly out through the back entrance of the practice building. It was indeed secluded, and hardly anyone ever used that path.

"Go home and get some proper rest, Ellie. You need to be in top form for the finals. I'll lock up the practice room for you so you don't leave anything behind," Cecilia said considerately.

Suspecting nothing, I handed her the key and went home alone.

The next day, I returned to the practice room full of confidence, ready to make one final push before the competition. Instead, I discovered that everything I'd prepared for the event had vanished.

Months of hard work were gone. Worst of all, the one-of-a-kind backing track I'd specially arranged for the finals was missing.

I searched frantically, turning the place upside down, but found nothing.

When I called Cecilia, she answered in a tearful voice. "Ellie, I locked the door before leaving yesterday. Are you sure you didn't put everything somewhere else and forget? Could it have been Silas? He seemed to be hanging around the area yesterday."

With only three days left before the finals, I couldn't prepare everything again in time. I broke down in tears and was ultimately forced to withdraw from the competition.

My music teacher was deeply disappointed, and my parents were even more upset. They thought I'd let everyone down at the most crucial moment and that my psychological resilience was simply too poor. Meanwhile, Cecilia stood beside me with red-rimmed eyes, comforting me and directing all the blame toward Silas.

I didn't even have a chance to defend myself. Every piece of evidence seemed to point to an unfortunate accident.

It was the first time I'd experienced the agony of having something to say but being unable to get the words out. My dream had only just begun to spread its wings when an invisible hand ruthlessly snapped them.

After that, I spent a long time in a state of despair.

The SATs were approaching. My academic grades had never been particularly good, and with my path into music seemingly blocked, my future looked bleak. Unexpectedly, Cecilia caught the attention of a music conservatory professor who visited our school.

The professor said that although her technique wasn't exceptional, her performances were emotionally sincere and showed considerable potential. He was willing to give her an opportunity to take the conservatory's special admissions exam.

My parents were overjoyed. They poured all their resources and attention into Cecilia, as though I were the underachieving adopted daughter and she was their biological child, the one destined to bring honor to the family.

The balance in our household tipped completely in her favor. I grew increasingly withdrawn and short-tempered, and my clashes with my parents became more frequent.

Cecilia, meanwhile, always seemed to appear at just the right moment, gently stepping in to mediate. Every time, she managed to convince my parents that she was considerate and understood the bigger picture, while I was an ungrateful, unreasonable girl who refused to appreciate anything.

The night before the SATs, I had another explosive argument with my parents over my college applications. Seething with anger, I stormed out and went to visit my vocal coach. He wasn't just my teacher; he was also my friend, and he had always believed in me.

I'd told Cecilia where I was going and asked her to let our parents know that I'd be back later. But the moment I reached the entrance to the alley near my teacher's home, Silas and several of his friends blocked my way.

Reeking of alcohol, his eyes wild with madness, Silas sneered at me. "Eliana Kessler, who the hell are you trying to fool with that innocent act? Cecilia told me everything. You actually like me, don't you? You're just too embarrassed to admit it! Don't worry. Tonight, my buddies and I will help you loosen up!"

Terror consumed me.

I struggled desperately and screamed for help. Fortunately, my teacher heard the commotion and rushed outside, frightening Silas and his friends into fleeing.

…

With my clothes disheveled and still shaking from the ordeal, I returned home, only to be greeted by my parents' furious faces and Cecilia's horrified expression.

"Eliana Kessler!" Dad roared, trembling with rage. "You went out in the middle of the night to meet Silas Crowe? Have you no shame?"

"That's not what happened, Dad! I was going to my teacher's house, but Silas…"

I shook my head, my voice calm but firm. "I'm sorry, but I can't forgive you. Your distrust and heartlessness back then hurt me far too deeply. I once desperately wanted your love and trust, but you disappointed me time and time again. I don't need them anymore.""Ellie…" Victoria tried to say something, but I cut her off. "I know you regret what happened, but what good does regret do now? The damage has already been done, and there's no way to make up for it."I looked at them both. "My life may be modest now, but I'm free, and I have peace. I don't want the grievances of the past disrupting my life anymore, and I certainly don't want to return to the home that broke my heart."With that, I turned and walked out of the ballroom.…It wasn't until I stepped outside and felt the evening breeze against my face that I realized tears had already streamed down my cheeks.Later, I came across news about Cecilia online. After being cast out of the Kessler family, she had no marketable

"Their parents are blind! They neglected their own daughter and treated an ungrateful wretch like a precious treasure. They got exactly what they deserved!""I feel so sorry for Eliana Kessler. She was deliberately framed, suffered so much, and was even kicked out by her own biological parents. She's been through so much!"The guests at the gala began discussing the revelations among themselves, their gazes toward Cecilia filled with contempt and disgust.Staring at the contents on the giant screen and hearing the whispers surrounding her, Cecilia finally broke down completely. She collapsed onto the floor and wailed, "No! That's not true! Eliana was jealous of me! She deliberately fabricated all of this!""Enough!" Donald roared in anger, his face dark with fury as he glared at Cecilia. "Even now, you're still lying! We must have been blind to adopt you and treat you like our own daughter, only for you to repay us like this and hurt Ellie in the process!"Victoria looked at Cec

"I know you're short on money, so I specifically asked the organizers to invite you. I wanted you to see just how miserable your life is now, and how well I'm doing in comparison."Her words pierced my heart like a needle. I suppressed my anger and replied coldly, "I'm not interested in anything the Kesslers own.""Is that so?" Cecilia repeated, as though she'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. Deliberately raising her voice, she made sure the people around us could hear every word. "You certainly didn't act that way back then. You used the fact that you were their biological daughter to monopolize Mom and Dad's affection, all for their money, no? So, why are you pretending to be above it all now? I've heard you've been singing in bars for the past few years, and that you have to drink with customers to earn tips. Is that true?"The guests around us immediately began whispering among themselves. Their strange, judgmental gazes raked over me like knives, making me deeply u

I stared at the familiar yet strangely unfamiliar man and woman standing before me, my heart feeling as though an invisible hand had clenched around it.They were my father, Donald Kessler, and my mother, Victoria Laurent.Seven years had passed. I'd thought I'd long since erased them from my memories. Yet now that we were face-to-face again, all the hurt I'd deliberately buried came rushing back, beyond my control.Victoria was the first to break the silence, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Ellie…"She took a step toward me, reaching out as though she wanted to touch me, but I instinctively recoiled. Her hand froze in midair, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. "It's really you, Ellie. You've grown so much. Have you been doing all right these past few years?"I curled my lips into a mocking smile. "Can't you tell?"My gaze swept over their expensive clothes before dropping to my own performance outfit, still covered in stage dust. "You've been living in luxury, whi

"Enough!" Mom interrupted me, her eyes filled with a depth of disappointment and anguish I'd never seen before. "Cece has already told us everything! She said you've been in contact with Silas lately, and that she's even tried to talk you out of it! How could you have so little self-respect? The SATs are just around the corner!"I stared at Cecilia in disbelief. She was hiding behind Mom, tears streaming down her face, looking as though my self-destruction had left her heartbroken and terrified. "Ellie… I know you're under a lot of pressure, but you can't do this to yourself…"As I looked at the undisguised disgust in my parents' eyes and Cecilia's tear-streaked face, I felt as though I'd fallen into an icy abyss. No matter what I said, I couldn't defend myself. For the first time, I understood with absolute clarity that I'd long since become an unwanted outsider in this family. My dreams, my innocence, my entire life—Cecilia could take them all away with a few casual words, then
