Chapter 2 The First Step Toward Ruin

Author: Veggie Sprout
My fingers brushed against something stiff inside the hidden compartment of the guitar case. I pulled it out and found an old photograph, its edges slightly yellowed with age, carefully pressed flat to preserve it.

In the picture, Dad had his arm around Mom's shoulders, while I stood between them, cradling the guitar and beaming at the camera. Cecilia stood quietly beside us, a perfectly measured smile resting on her lips.

Yet beneath that composed expression, her eyes held a trace of envy—or perhaps resentment—that was easy to miss.

On the back of the photograph, Mom's elegant handwriting read, "Happy 15th birthday, Ellie! May all your dreams come true!"

The date was exactly seven years ago.

My eyes instantly filled with tears.

Looking back now, all that warmth and hope seemed nothing more than a cruel joke. What Cecilia had destroyed with her own hands wasn't just my family. She had destroyed the dream that had once given my life purpose.

Before I could stop myself, my thoughts drifted back to the days I'd tried so hard to forget.

There had been a time when I had everything people could envy. I was the Kessler family's only daughter. My parents loved each other, and we were well-off. I'd loved singing since childhood and had a natural talent for it. I'd won plenty of awards and was the kind of child other parents held up as an example to their own kids.

Cecilia had come to live with us when I was twelve.

"Ellie, this is Cece. Her parents were close friends of ours, but they passed away in an accident not long ago."

I still remembered how small and frail she looked when she first arrived, her timid eyes resembling those of a frightened fawn.

Mom said looking at Cecilia reminded her of me when I was young and often ill. She insisted on bringing Cecilia home so I could have someone to keep me company.

At first, I'd genuinely welcomed my new little sister. I shared my toys, clothes, and even half my bedroom with her, helping her adjust to her new surroundings.

At school, I stood up for her and made sure no one bullied her. She was always so well-behaved, trailing timidly behind me and calling my name every time.

But somewhere along the way, things began to change.

I noticed that whenever I showed even the slightest impatience or threw a little tantrum, Cecilia's eyes would immediately redden. She would quietly retreat to a corner and cry without making a sound.

At first, Mom and Dad would comfort me, telling me to be more patient with my little sister because she'd lost both her parents and had suffered enough.

Yet, as these incidents became more frequent, the way they looked at me gradually changed. Disapproval began creeping into their eyes.

"Ellie, you're the older sister. You need to be more mature."

"Cece's timid. Stop scaring her all the time."

My straightforward, easygoing personality was gradually recast in the light of Cecilia's endless displays of gentleness and good behavior. What had once been seen as an open, unrestrained nature became spoiled, domineering, and childish.

Little by little, disappointment in their eyes grew whenever they looked at me, while their affection for Cecilia deepened. The warm atmosphere our home had once enjoyed slowly gave way to something tense and oppressive, an unease that no one ever openly acknowledged.

…

By high school, my vocal talent had made me a regular performer at school arts events. I was something of a local celebrity on campus, known as the school's little songbird. Cecilia, on the other hand, had average grades and no particular strengths. She was always quiet and unassuming.

I'd thought that at least music would remain one thing I could still take pride in.

Then came the winter of my junior year.

The city was hosting a prestigious youth music competition, and the winner would be granted a guaranteed audition at a top music conservatory.

For someone like me, who dreamed of pursuing a career in music, it was an opportunity that could change everything. I threw myself into preparing my competition pieces, spending nearly every day in the practice rooms and vocal studios.

Meanwhile, Cecilia continued playing the role of the thoughtful younger sister. She brought me water, helped me with my sheet music, and even took the initiative to deal with the minor nuisances caused by the boys who pursued me while I practiced.

That included Silas Crowe, the punk who would later come dangerously close to ruining my life.

Back then, Silas was obsessed with me. Even after I'd rejected him outright, he refused to give up and kept pestering me. When Cecilia learned about it, she volunteered to talk some sense into him so I could focus on preparing for the competition.

I'd been foolish enough to believe she was genuinely trying to help me. I had no idea that this was the first step in the carefully laid path she'd prepared for me—a path that would lead straight to hell.

By the week before the competition, I was practically living in the school's practice rooms.

I shook my head, my voice calm but firm. "I'm sorry, but I can't forgive you. Your distrust and heartlessness back then hurt me far too deeply. I once desperately wanted your love and trust, but you disappointed me time and time again. I don't need them anymore.""Ellie…" Victoria tried to say something, but I cut her off. "I know you regret what happened, but what good does regret do now? The damage has already been done, and there's no way to make up for it."I looked at them both. "My life may be modest now, but I'm free, and I have peace. I don't want the grievances of the past disrupting my life anymore, and I certainly don't want to return to the home that broke my heart."With that, I turned and walked out of the ballroom.…It wasn't until I stepped outside and felt the evening breeze against my face that I realized tears had already streamed down my cheeks.Later, I came across news about Cecilia online. After being cast out of the Kessler family, she had no marketable

"Their parents are blind! They neglected their own daughter and treated an ungrateful wretch like a precious treasure. They got exactly what they deserved!""I feel so sorry for Eliana Kessler. She was deliberately framed, suffered so much, and was even kicked out by her own biological parents. She's been through so much!"The guests at the gala began discussing the revelations among themselves, their gazes toward Cecilia filled with contempt and disgust.Staring at the contents on the giant screen and hearing the whispers surrounding her, Cecilia finally broke down completely. She collapsed onto the floor and wailed, "No! That's not true! Eliana was jealous of me! She deliberately fabricated all of this!""Enough!" Donald roared in anger, his face dark with fury as he glared at Cecilia. "Even now, you're still lying! We must have been blind to adopt you and treat you like our own daughter, only for you to repay us like this and hurt Ellie in the process!"Victoria looked at Cec

"I know you're short on money, so I specifically asked the organizers to invite you. I wanted you to see just how miserable your life is now, and how well I'm doing in comparison."Her words pierced my heart like a needle. I suppressed my anger and replied coldly, "I'm not interested in anything the Kesslers own.""Is that so?" Cecilia repeated, as though she'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. Deliberately raising her voice, she made sure the people around us could hear every word. "You certainly didn't act that way back then. You used the fact that you were their biological daughter to monopolize Mom and Dad's affection, all for their money, no? So, why are you pretending to be above it all now? I've heard you've been singing in bars for the past few years, and that you have to drink with customers to earn tips. Is that true?"The guests around us immediately began whispering among themselves. Their strange, judgmental gazes raked over me like knives, making me deeply u

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 5 The Kessler Fortune Is Mine

I stared at the familiar yet strangely unfamiliar man and woman standing before me, my heart feeling as though an invisible hand had clenched around it.They were my father, Donald Kessler, and my mother, Victoria Laurent.Seven years had passed. I'd thought I'd long since erased them from my memories. Yet now that we were face-to-face again, all the hurt I'd deliberately buried came rushing back, beyond my control.Victoria was the first to break the silence, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Ellie…"She took a step toward me, reaching out as though she wanted to touch me, but I instinctively recoiled. Her hand froze in midair, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. "It's really you, Ellie. You've grown so much. Have you been doing all right these past few years?"I curled my lips into a mocking smile. "Can't you tell?"My gaze swept over their expensive clothes before dropping to my own performance outfit, still covered in stage dust. "You've been living in luxury, whi

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 4 The Night They Branded Me a Disgrace

"Enough!" Mom interrupted me, her eyes filled with a depth of disappointment and anguish I'd never seen before. "Cece has already told us everything! She said you've been in contact with Silas lately, and that she's even tried to talk you out of it! How could you have so little self-respect? The SATs are just around the corner!"I stared at Cecilia in disbelief. She was hiding behind Mom, tears streaming down her face, looking as though my self-destruction had left her heartbroken and terrified. "Ellie… I know you're under a lot of pressure, but you can't do this to yourself…"As I looked at the undisguised disgust in my parents' eyes and Cecilia's tear-streaked face, I felt as though I'd fallen into an icy abyss. No matter what I said, I couldn't defend myself. For the first time, I understood with absolute clarity that I'd long since become an unwanted outsider in this family. My dreams, my innocence, my entire life—Cecilia could take them all away with a few casual words, then

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 3 The Night Everything Changed

That afternoon, Cecilia came by as usual to bring me some water, but she looked unusually flustered. "Ellie, I think I just saw Silas hanging around outside the practice rooms. There was something really unsettling about the way he was looking around."My heart skipped a beat. Silas had kept his distance for a while after Cecilia talked him into leaving me alone last time. I hadn't expected him to show up again.Cecilia took my hand, her voice soothing. "Don't be scared, Ellie. I'll take you out through the back door so we can avoid him. The finals are what matter right now. There's no need to invite trouble when you're so close to the finish line."I looked at her gratefully. For a moment, I even wondered if I'd been wrong to suspect her before. After gathering my sheet music, I followed her quietly out through the back entrance of the practice building. It was indeed secluded, and hardly anyone ever used that path."Go home and get some proper rest, Ellie. You need to be in top
