Chapter 4 The Night They Branded Me a Disgrace

Author: Veggie Sprout
"Enough!" Mom interrupted me, her eyes filled with a depth of disappointment and anguish I'd never seen before. "Cece has already told us everything! She said you've been in contact with Silas lately, and that she's even tried to talk you out of it! How could you have so little self-respect? The SATs are just around the corner!"

I stared at Cecilia in disbelief.

She was hiding behind Mom, tears streaming down her face, looking as though my self-destruction had left her heartbroken and terrified. "Ellie… I know you're under a lot of pressure, but you can't do this to yourself…"

As I looked at the undisguised disgust in my parents' eyes and Cecilia's tear-streaked face, I felt as though I'd fallen into an icy abyss. No matter what I said, I couldn't defend myself.

For the first time, I understood with absolute clarity that I'd long since become an unwanted outsider in this family. My dreams, my innocence, my entire life—Cecilia could take them all away with a few casual words, then trample them underfoot.

I returned to my room in a daze.

Cecilia's hypocritical expression and my parents' distrustful gazes kept intertwining in my mind, replaying over and over.

…

On the final day of the SATs, the moment I entered the examination hall, I noticed several classmates looking at me strangely. Some even deliberately lowered their voices to whisper as I passed.

"That's her? She looks so innocent. Who would've thought…"

"I heard she was out with some street thug last night, and her family caught her red-handed."

"Seriously? She couldn't even behave herself the night before the SATs?"

"Her adopted sister, Cecilia, said it herself. Why would she make something like that up?"

"Unbelievable. She always acted so prim and proper, but turns out she's rotten behind closed doors…"

Their filthy remarks made me tremble with rage. I wanted nothing more than to rush home and tear Cecilia's lying mouth apart. Yet, the warning bell rang, and I had no choice but to force myself to focus on the exam first.

…

The moment the final exam ended, I rushed straight home.

My parents and Cecilia were sitting together on the sofa, chatting and laughing as though nothing had happened.

The anger I'd been bottling up for two days finally shattered the last of my restraint. "Cecilia! Did you spread those lies about me? Were you in cahoots with Silas from the beginning?"

Cecilia looked as though I'd terrified her.

Tears instantly spilled down her cheeks as she shrank behind Mom. "Ellie, what are you talking about? There's no such thing! Silas was the one who kept harassing you. I even tried to talk you out of it…"

I was shaking with fury. "It was you! You told him I was going to my teacher's house! You twisted everything around when you talked to Mom and Dad!"

Dad slammed his hand against the table, his face livid as he glared at me. "Are you ever going to stop this? Your own disgraceful behavior has become public knowledge, and now you want to drag Cece into your mess?"

Mom's voice was filled with disappointment and exhaustion. "Ellie, where there's smoke, there's fire! Cece has always been such a sensible girl. Why would she ever hurt you?"

The suspicion in Mom's eyes extinguished the last flicker of hope I had left. I stopped arguing, silently turned around, and returned to my room.

…

When the SAT results were finally released, I wasn't surprised to discover that I'd done terribly. Cecilia, meanwhile, received an acceptance letter from a respectable music conservatory.

Faced with my results, my parents couldn't even be bothered to scold me. All that remained was their utter disappointment and cold indifference. Every bit of their attention and happiness was devoted to Cecilia, as though I were nothing more than a stranger who happened to live under their roof.

One morning, I packed a few belongings and took my old guitar before leaving the place that could no longer be called home. I walked away without a backward glance and without a trace of regret.

After leaving home, I'd lived in damp, moldy basements and worked late-night shifts at convenience stores. Eventually, I managed to scrape together enough to maintain a basic semblance of dignity by singing at bars.

And just like that, seven years had passed.

I put the past aside and continued searching for the next bar where I could find work as a singer.

…

That evening, I'd just finished a song at a new bar when the manager escorted two people backstage. He explained that an important investor wanted to meet the singer.

Under the dim lights, the three of us stared at one another, and time seemingly froze.

I shook my head, my voice calm but firm. "I'm sorry, but I can't forgive you. Your distrust and heartlessness back then hurt me far too deeply. I once desperately wanted your love and trust, but you disappointed me time and time again. I don't need them anymore.""Ellie…" Victoria tried to say something, but I cut her off. "I know you regret what happened, but what good does regret do now? The damage has already been done, and there's no way to make up for it."I looked at them both. "My life may be modest now, but I'm free, and I have peace. I don't want the grievances of the past disrupting my life anymore, and I certainly don't want to return to the home that broke my heart."With that, I turned and walked out of the ballroom.…It wasn't until I stepped outside and felt the evening breeze against my face that I realized tears had already streamed down my cheeks.Later, I came across news about Cecilia online. After being cast out of the Kessler family, she had no marketable

"Their parents are blind! They neglected their own daughter and treated an ungrateful wretch like a precious treasure. They got exactly what they deserved!""I feel so sorry for Eliana Kessler. She was deliberately framed, suffered so much, and was even kicked out by her own biological parents. She's been through so much!"The guests at the gala began discussing the revelations among themselves, their gazes toward Cecilia filled with contempt and disgust.Staring at the contents on the giant screen and hearing the whispers surrounding her, Cecilia finally broke down completely. She collapsed onto the floor and wailed, "No! That's not true! Eliana was jealous of me! She deliberately fabricated all of this!""Enough!" Donald roared in anger, his face dark with fury as he glared at Cecilia. "Even now, you're still lying! We must have been blind to adopt you and treat you like our own daughter, only for you to repay us like this and hurt Ellie in the process!"Victoria looked at Cec

"I know you're short on money, so I specifically asked the organizers to invite you. I wanted you to see just how miserable your life is now, and how well I'm doing in comparison."Her words pierced my heart like a needle. I suppressed my anger and replied coldly, "I'm not interested in anything the Kesslers own.""Is that so?" Cecilia repeated, as though she'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. Deliberately raising her voice, she made sure the people around us could hear every word. "You certainly didn't act that way back then. You used the fact that you were their biological daughter to monopolize Mom and Dad's affection, all for their money, no? So, why are you pretending to be above it all now? I've heard you've been singing in bars for the past few years, and that you have to drink with customers to earn tips. Is that true?"The guests around us immediately began whispering among themselves. Their strange, judgmental gazes raked over me like knives, making me deeply u

I stared at the familiar yet strangely unfamiliar man and woman standing before me, my heart feeling as though an invisible hand had clenched around it.They were my father, Donald Kessler, and my mother, Victoria Laurent.Seven years had passed. I'd thought I'd long since erased them from my memories. Yet now that we were face-to-face again, all the hurt I'd deliberately buried came rushing back, beyond my control.Victoria was the first to break the silence, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Ellie…"She took a step toward me, reaching out as though she wanted to touch me, but I instinctively recoiled. Her hand froze in midair, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. "It's really you, Ellie. You've grown so much. Have you been doing all right these past few years?"I curled my lips into a mocking smile. "Can't you tell?"My gaze swept over their expensive clothes before dropping to my own performance outfit, still covered in stage dust. "You've been living in luxury, whi

  • My Own Harbor   Chapter 3 The Night Everything Changed

That afternoon, Cecilia came by as usual to bring me some water, but she looked unusually flustered. "Ellie, I think I just saw Silas hanging around outside the practice rooms. There was something really unsettling about the way he was looking around."My heart skipped a beat. Silas had kept his distance for a while after Cecilia talked him into leaving me alone last time. I hadn't expected him to show up again.Cecilia took my hand, her voice soothing. "Don't be scared, Ellie. I'll take you out through the back door so we can avoid him. The finals are what matter right now. There's no need to invite trouble when you're so close to the finish line."I looked at her gratefully. For a moment, I even wondered if I'd been wrong to suspect her before. After gathering my sheet music, I followed her quietly out through the back entrance of the practice building. It was indeed secluded, and hardly anyone ever used that path."Go home and get some proper rest, Ellie. You need to be in top
