My Parents Sued Me for Not Being Dutiful

Chapter 1

The courtroom was packed with familiar faces. Almost all of them were my relatives.

This was another world, one with extremely advanced artificial intelligence. Here, the court was the highest authority.

My parents, Gideon Briggs and Meryl Wheeler, sat not far away with my younger brother, Cody Briggs. The look in their eyes was pure heartbreak, as if I were some unforgivable criminal.

"No one may leave during trial proceedings. Any attempt to exit will result in immediate execution," the presiding judge, Judge Caine, recited the rules in a mechanical tone, then looked at me. "Defendant Brandon Briggs, do you accept judgment?"

Watching the familiar scene unfold, my chest tightened with a flood of emotions.

That was right. I had been reborn.

At first, I couldn't understand why my parents would drag me to court for being unfilial. I thought I must've done something to make them misunderstand me. They had given me life and raised me. I couldn't bear to see them suffer the court's harsh penalties. So, I confessed on the spot.

Once a case reached the court, there was no turning back for anyone.

It was only ten years in prison and all my assets. I told myself it was repayment to my parents for raising me.

But only when I died did I learn the truth. It had all been a scheme. Cody wanted to study abroad and buy a house. My family didn't have enough money, so they set their sights on me.

When I contracted tuberculosis in prison, I called home, begging my parents to help me. But Mom said to me in an icy tone, "You unfilial child. Now you remember us? If you die in there, you deserve it!"

In the end, no one saved me. I died a miserable death in that prison cell.

After death, my soul drifted back home. I saw Mom and Dad happily hosting a housewarming party for Cody in a huge two-thousand-square-foot apartment, paid for entirely with my money.

Cody sliced the cake, unable to hide his excitement. In a low, sinister voice, he said, "Are we really not going to do anything about Brandon? What if he survives and comes after us when he gets out?"

Mom sneered coldly. "That's what he owes us. What right does he have to come after us? If anything, blame his bad luck. No one else got sick. He's just being dramatic."

Dad chimed in, "If he can contribute to the family before he dies, that's his good fortune. And even if he somehow makes it out, we'll just refuse to acknowledge him. After all, he's already labeled as an unfilial son. He won't be able to continue showing his face in this world."

I closed my eyes in despair. They never cared whether I lived or died. All that concern and love they had shown me before had all been a lie.

This time, I'd drag them into hell with my own hands.

After another round of capital injection, my company became a leading force in the industry.I heard that Cody also contracted tuberculosis in prison. He called our parents, and they went to see him, both of them crying their hearts out. But they didn't treat him with the same cold indifference they had shown me in my previous life. They simply felt powerless to help.I guessed that they would come looking for me, so I sat in my office, waiting. The moment Mom walked in, she dropped to her knees. My eyebrows twitched slightly, but I made no move to stop her."Bran, please save your brother. He's going to die. If you just give us some money, we'll be grateful to you for the rest of our lives."Why hadn't they begged anyone like this for me in my previous life? They even had my money at the time. Saving me would've been as simple as a single decision.Yet they still chose to turn a blind eye.I scoffed coldly."If you could remember that I was in the same situation in my past lif

Listening to my parents' desperate pleas now, I felt only a sense of distance. In my past life, I had pleaded with them just like this. I had begged them to spare me. I had begged them to take me to a doctor. I had even begged them to put me out of my misery because the illness was torturing me to death. But all I got was disgust and disdain. I never saw any trace of the compassion or reluctance one would expect from parents.Since they were the ones who acted unjustly first, why were they now blaming me for being heartless?I smirked slightly, looked at them coldly, and took a few steps back—just like they'd done in my previous life."Mom, Dad, you're both cursed with bad luck now. Don't come near me. I don't want it rubbing off on me."That was something Mom had said to me in my past life as well. She'd said, "Tuberculosis is contagious. Stay away from us. If we catch it too, what will happen to your brother?"My parents stiffened. The disappointment in their eyes was obvious.

The relatives who had spoken for my parents earlier all turned silent. No matter how many pleading looks my parents threw their way, they were completely ignored. The relatives, clearly feeling ashamed, just let out deep sighs and left one after another. A few who had yelled at me the most harshly in the beginning even came over with apologetic smiles."Bran, please don't blame us. We were deceived by your parents, and that's why we misunderstood you. They're the truly despicable ones for hiding the truth.""That's right, Bran. We're really sorry."I waved my hand and said nothing. After all, according to the court's rules, they would face some level of punishment anyway. I didn't need to get my hands dirty. The live chat was now condemning my parents as well."What? They actually pushed their own son out as a shield in a life-and-death situation? What kind of animals would do that?""Now I know why those two shameless people kept insisting Brandon plead guilty from the start.

This time, my own memories appeared on the big screen.Back then, I was in the middle of starting my business, and the prospects were excellent. At the very least, I no longer had to sit by the roadside every day with a group of day laborers, waiting to be picked like merchandise for a hundred dollars or so.When my parents learned how much I was making, they started getting ideas.Although I was willing to let go of past grudges and be good to them unconditionally, I would no longer let Mom control my finances. After all, my company needed capital for turnover. She brought this matter up to me multiple times, but I brushed her off every time.By then, Cody had also graduated. My parents wanted him to go abroad for a better future, but he didn't want to.Perhaps he had the gambling gene. Back when he was studying at the prestigious private school, he made a lot of rich, wealthy friends. To fit in, he followed them to Pahau, the land of the casinos.I only found out he owed milli

Following the murmurs of my relatives, Judge Caine spoke again."Second charge—the defendant assaulted his parents. Do you plead guilty?"I didn't blink, merely shaking my head. "I don't."Dad exploded like a cat with its fur standing on end. He shot up from his seat and roared at me, "You piece of trash! The scar you gave me is still here! How dare you deny it?"As he spoke, he rolled up his pant leg, revealing an ugly scar.Everyone in the courtroom gasped and shot me judgmental looks.I straightened my back and refused to look at him."If I did it, I'll naturally admit it. But I didn't, so why should I?"Dad wanted to say more, but Judge Caine silenced him with a look. Without wasting any more words, he followed the same procedure as before and played the footage on the big screen. This time, the live chat was much more cautious. No one dared to throw out opinions so casually anymore. After all, the sting of being proven wrong earlier was still fresh in everyone's minds.S

"Mom, how are you? Which hospital are you at? I'll come see you right now."Mom's voice came through the receiver, cold and indifferent. "Drop the act. What were you doing earlier? Forget it. I won't argue with you. Just transfer me some money. The money isn't enough for the surgery."Back then, I didn't realize that she never wanted me to visit at all. All she wanted was money.I gripped the phone tightly, my knuckles turning pale. I said with difficulty, "Mom, isn't all my money with you? My salary, and the severance pay from when I got laid off. You said you were keeping it for me for a house and marriage. Now that you're hospitalized, you should use that first. It's fine. Just use it."Silence stretched on the other end. Even the relatives in the gallery fell quiet, their expressions turning strange as they looked at Mom. She turned her head away, avoiding their gazes. The live chat exploded."I finally understand why the three of them get to live so comfortably while Brandon
