Chapter 2

Author: Ivy Chamberlain
I suppressed the emotions welling up inside. I had no desire to tangle with them any longer.

Just as I turned to leave, someone squealed in panic, "Oh my god! I think we missed the pickup time!"

"What?" Pearl glanced down at her watch. "Dammit! I hope Mr. Foster doesn't hold this against us. You two, hurry inside and wait! And you, drive the car over!"

Two of them sprinted off toward the terminal building.

I froze in my tracks.

The "Mr. Foster" they were talking about seemed to be me. That was the name I used back in Eldermere.

I looked at Pearl, keeping my voice cool. "Wait. You guys are here to pick up Foster?"

Richard looked back at me. "What's it to you? Don't tell me you actually know Mr. Foster. Right, you just came back from Eldermere, didn't you? Don't tell me you're about to claim you're Mr. Foster."

I nodded. "I am Foster. Let's just go. We're already running late for the meeting."

Silence fell over the group for a second. They exchanged quick looks, then burst into laughter.

Richard lets out a mocking laugh. "You're Mr. Foster? Who do you think you are?"

He tapped the pickup sign in his hand. "Read closely. We're waiting for the executive secretary of Carter Corp's secretarial department. Do you even know what Carter Corp is?"

Of course I did. That was Catherine's empire, and I was that very executive secretary.

"Ms. Carter of Carter Corp is the only daughter of the Carter family and their current matriarch. Word is, she met her husband under the cloisters of Fiorenza Cathedral, while he was trying to sell his paintings.

"She brought Mr. Foster to Iveraine, funded his gallery, introduced him to high society, and taught him how to run a business. Turns out Mr. Foster was sharp. He picked up the ropes in no time."

Another man in the group chimed in, "Everyone in the upper circles knows Mr. Foster is the rising star of high society. Everyone's trying to win his favor.

"You're just a washed-up, freeloading boy toy, yet you're dreaming that you're the Mr. Foster who made the head of the Carter family bow? Anyone would laugh themselves to death hearing this!"

"Alex, you're still the same as ever. Always dreaming!" Pearl sneered.

As I listened to their eager chatter, a faint smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

The rumors weren't wrong. Catherine and I were indeed head over heels for each other.

She loved showing her affection, always showering me with the world's finest treasures just to see me smile, which only fueled the wild rumors outside.

"I remember Ms. Carter bought a pair of sapphire cufflinks in Glenford last year just to make her husband happy. It cost 30 million dollars. Every guy on the internet was dying of jealousy over Mr. Foster back then."

Richard paused, pointed at my cufflinks, and let out a sharp cry. "Wait, it's that exact style!"

A hush fell over the crowd. Every pair of eyes locked onto my cufflinks.

Pearl violently grabbed my wrist, examined them, and then scoffed with disdain. "Pretty detailed knockoff. Which street stall did you buy this from? Without me these past few years, you really can only afford cheap trash like this. Don't wear them again. It drags down my standard."

I pulled my hand back, a smirk gracing my face as my fingers gently traced the cufflinks.

When Pearl saw me smile, her pupils shrank. She suddenly grabbed my wrist, trying to tear the cufflink off.

I hadn't expected her to physically attack me, and she managed to yank one free.

Richard took it from Pearl and turned it over in his hands. "It really is more refined than any fake I've seen. But no matter how nice the fake is, it's still trash. Alex, you're still as full of shit as ever.

"Wait, I remember you used to study art, didn't you? Don't tell me seeing Mr. Foster succeed gave you the bright idea to use the same trick on Ms. Carter?"

The moment the words left his mouth, the crowd burst into laughter.

To them, the idea was utterly absurd. The Carter family was a world-renowned defense giant, and Catherine, as the head of the family, lived in absolute glory. And just recently, I was a nobody Pearl had sent to prison, eating spoiled food.

How could Catherine ever look twice at someone like me?

"I'll just hang onto this cufflink. Since you're going to be my driver, don't go wearing cheap knockoffs like this. It'll embarrass us."

Afraid he might smash the cufflink, I snapped, "Give it back to me. Catherine gave me that—"

Before I could even finish my sentence, Pearl slapped me hard across the face, sending my head spinning to the side. Blood trickled from the corner of my lip.

"Shut up!"

Even though I could have rested at home, Catherine and Lilian insisted that I stay in the hospital. They even brought in a swarm of doctors to check my body over and over again. It wasn't until they confirmed I was in the absolute best shape possible that they finally allowed me to be discharged. As I was packing my luggage, the hospital room door was suddenly pushed open. Since my back was turned, I assumed it was Lilian. "Lilian, bring my jacket over, please.""Alex, it's me."My hands packing the clothes froze.I turned to see Pearl, whom I hadn't seen in a while. She was dressed in a nurse's uniform, her face still heavily swollen."What are you doing here?"Pearl was pretty impressive to have managed to get past Catherine's bodyguards."Alex, don't be scared. I won't hurt you. I just…""Just what?" I asked, my tone laced with annoyance."I know you still love me. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been so forgiving toward me back then. Could you please forgive me and put in a

The smell of disinfectant in the hospital stung my nose, prompting me to open my eyes.I looked down at the hospital gown I was wearing, feeling a bit dazed. My close friend, Edward Conrad, who was standing nearby, immediately rushed over as soon as he saw me awake. "Alex, you're finally awake! If you didn't wake up soon, those two little devils of yours were going to turn Bellmont upside down."I listened calmly.I wasn't worried about their safety. No one could ever hurt Catherine.Edward poured me a glass of water. "I've heard about everything that happened over the past few days. The fact that you managed to hold back under those circumstances shows just how much you've recovered over the years."In fact, it's almost an overcorrection! How could you tolerate all that? If it were me, they would have vanished from Bellmont the very first time they provoked me."I smiled softly.Edward was the most talented psychiatrist in Bellmont. Years ago, while serving time in prison, I

Seeing that I was ignoring her, Pearl gripped her fists tight, her eyes burning with humiliated rage."Ms. Carter, I'm not lying to you! Alex is nothing but a calculating, freeloading leech! You really need to be careful with him. You can't trust a single word he says!"Do you have any idea what he did back then? Just to sell his paintings, he didn't hesitate to use his looks to seduce rich older women into buying his work!""Shut up!"To everyone's surprise, Lilian was the first to blow up."My daddy's paintings are priceless! He's a famous painter in Eldermere! I won't let you insult him like that! Do you have any idea how hideous you look right now? You're just like those disgusting men who try to climb into my mommy's bed! How gross!"Lilian shot Pearl a look of pure disgust, then pinched her nose. "To think Daddy actually risked everything for a person like you back then. I feel so sorry for him!"Pearl's chest heaved violently from sheer humiliation and anger.Richard, me

I couldn't stand seeing Catherine and Lilian look at me like that, so I threw my hands up in defeat. "Alright, alright. It really doesn't hurt."With me easing the mood, the doctor visibly relaxed quite a bit. After finishing his examination, he turned to Catherine and reported, "Mr. Foster is doing fine. The scrape on his hand is a bit severe, but I'll use the absolute best ointment to ensure it leaves no scar."Catherine remained silent.Only I knew that this quiet reserve was the calm before her storm. As the main instigator behind all this, Pearl was sweating bullets.Who could have guessed that the ex-fiance she abandoned years ago had somehow turned into the husband of her boss? She desperately wanted to offer an explanation, yet watching the intimacy between Catherine and me stirred a flare of jealousy deep in her chest. That implicit sense of possessiveness shot up to its absolute peak right at this moment. Still, for the sake of the Moran family's future, she didn't da

The handful of people who had gone to the airport with Pearl were shaking so violently they had to lean against tables for support. The "freeloading loser" they had spent the last few days mocking was actually Catherine's husband. I was the very VIP they had wasted hours waiting for at the airport. They hated themselves for not connecting the dots back then. But I had literally told them I was Catherine's husband at the airport. They just refused to believe me. Even though I looked identical to the photograph, they had still brushed it off. They deeply regretted what they'd done and wished they could disappear.Yet right as the entire room fell dead silent, a guy who clearly couldn't read the room strolled forward."Alex, where on earth did you hire these two actors? They're not bad. Want me to hook them up with an agency? They might even land a gig overseas. Showing up in some non-brand, bargain-bin outfit pretending to be Catherine? Man, you're killing me here."You're just a

The emotionless little girl's face lit up with delight the moment she saw me, and she sprinted straight into my arms."Daddy, I've been a good girl these past few days. I've listened to Mommy and stayed out of trouble. Wait, why is there so much blood on your hand? Did you lose control of yourself again? Don't be scared. Mommy and I are right here with you."Acting like a little grown-up, she buried herself in my chest and gently patted my back, soothing the meltdown that had been threatening to erupt inside me.Daddy. That single word instantly pulled every pair of eyes in the room off the little girl and locked them onto me.The guests who had been coldly standing by, watching me get humiliated moments ago, all stared with wide eyes.I wiped the blood off my palm against my clothes, then reached out to pinch my daughter Lilian Foswick's cheek lovingly. "I'm fine, Lilian. You're such a big girl now, already taking care of Mommy."Heartbroken, Lilian pulled my hand close, gentl
