Chapter 1

Stepping onto Bellmont soil again after five years, I felt surprisingly calm.

Checking my watch, I flowed with the crowd toward the exit.

I waited for a while, but there was still no sign of my ride.

What was going on? My wife, Catherine Carter, said everything was arranged.

Just as I took out my phone to check, a black sedan pulled up right in front of me.

The window rolled down to reveal Pearl Moran, my ex-fiancee who had sent me to prison five years ago, all for the sake of her assistant, Richard Greer.

Richard and a few other familiar faces were sitting in the car with her.

I turned to leave, but they actually got out of the car.

Someone blocked my path. "Well, look who we have here! If it isn't Alex Foswick, the murderer. He actually dared to come back!"

"He must be missing Ms. Moran so much he couldn't sleep. Probably came back on his knees begging for forgiveness! Haha!"

They shoved and jostled me, laughing amongst themselves.

The moment Pearl saw me, a flicker of surprise crossed her face. "It really is you? I thought you'd never have the nerve to come back."

Richard chimed in sarcastically, "Alex? I heard you were off playing boy toy for some wealthy old hag overseas. What's with the cheap outfit?"

The crowd erupted into laughter.

"How could some old hag compare to Pearl? Besides, the Moran family is a vassal to the Carters now. They're about to blow up. He probably heard the news and came back to offer himself up."

"Look at those rags, though. Tsk tsk. Can't even afford a decent suit? Talk about pathetic."

"No wonder he's back to leech off Ms. Moran. Must have hit rock bottom out there."

I glanced down at my dark gray shirt. This was a custom-made outfit Catherine had a master tailor in Montvale make for me last month. I heard the fabric alone cost 30 thousand dollars. Unassuming as it looked, it was incredibly comfortable.

Just because it lacked a brand logo, they took me for a broke loser?

A guy who used to be somewhat friendly with me tried to smooth things over. "Alex, it's good you're back. Honestly, Ms. Moran has been looking for you all these years."

The smile on Pearl's face stiffened for a second before she brushed it off. "Life hasn't been easy for you out there. Now that you're back, just stay by my side. Richard's driver retired last month. You can take over."

Still the same condescending attitude. She was always acting as if she were doing me a grand favor.

Seeing her again, all I felt was disgust.

I had no desire to waste another second on them and was about to reveal my true identity, but Richard cut in. "Alex, don't blame Ms. Moran. She's only looking out for you.

"Down as you are, offering you a job as a driver is pure charity on her part. She's only doing it because of your past relationship. Don't worry. As long as you drive straight, nobody's going to look down on you. Being a driver beats living off a rich old widow, doesn't it?"

I frowned. Five years had passed, and her crowd remained just as vile.

Pearl mistook my silence for resentment over the past, and a flash of smugness gleamed in her eyes.

"Alright, you know how tough it is out there now. You never had much talent anyway. It's only natural that those older women threw you out once your looks faded.

"Don't worry. I won't hold it against you that you lived off a woman. You used to rely on me back then anyway. Just know your place from now on, and I'll treat you right.

"I still have that apartment you used to live in. You can move back there. It's no villa, but it beats a basement."

Her words triggered another round of mean-spirited laughter from the group.

"See, Alex? Ms. Moran is way too good to you. Worrying you'd suffer out there, she's got your housing and job all sorted. All you have to do is drive for Richard. Isn't that better than catering to old hags? Come on, thank Ms. Moran."

Richard adjusted the Rolex on his wrist, putting on a modest front. "Won't this be too much of a step down for Alex? After all, he was a star student at Bellmont University Fine Arts Department."

Pearl let out a sneer. "What step down? He beat you up over a trivial matter back then. He deserves to suffer a little now.

"Besides, he was never a star student. Who knows what tricks he pulled back then just to get an auditor spot? He didn't even graduate."

Richard feigned sudden realization. "Don't worry, Alex. If you drive well, I'll take care of you. I'll throw in an extra 500 dollars a month for gas."

Even now, she still believed Richard sexually harassing her back then was just harmless fun.

Back then, when she failed to get into her dream university, I couldn't bear to see her heartbroken. So I lied, telling her I was just an auditor at Bellmont University to make her feel better.

As for why I never got that degree…

I gave her a long, hard look.

Because she sent me to prison.

Whatever. There was no point in digging up old history. I had far better things now—a beautiful, capable wife, a sweet daughter, and a second child on the way.

  • My Past Won't Leave Me Alone   Chapter 11

Even though I could have rested at home, Catherine and Lilian insisted that I stay in the hospital. They even brought in a swarm of doctors to check my body over and over again. It wasn't until they confirmed I was in the absolute best shape possible that they finally allowed me to be discharged. As I was packing my luggage, the hospital room door was suddenly pushed open. Since my back was turned, I assumed it was Lilian. "Lilian, bring my jacket over, please.""Alex, it's me."My hands packing the clothes froze.I turned to see Pearl, whom I hadn't seen in a while. She was dressed in a nurse's uniform, her face still heavily swollen."What are you doing here?"Pearl was pretty impressive to have managed to get past Catherine's bodyguards."Alex, don't be scared. I won't hurt you. I just…""Just what?" I asked, my tone laced with annoyance."I know you still love me. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been so forgiving toward me back then. Could you please forgive me and put in a

The smell of disinfectant in the hospital stung my nose, prompting me to open my eyes.I looked down at the hospital gown I was wearing, feeling a bit dazed. My close friend, Edward Conrad, who was standing nearby, immediately rushed over as soon as he saw me awake. "Alex, you're finally awake! If you didn't wake up soon, those two little devils of yours were going to turn Bellmont upside down."I listened calmly.I wasn't worried about their safety. No one could ever hurt Catherine.Edward poured me a glass of water. "I've heard about everything that happened over the past few days. The fact that you managed to hold back under those circumstances shows just how much you've recovered over the years."In fact, it's almost an overcorrection! How could you tolerate all that? If it were me, they would have vanished from Bellmont the very first time they provoked me."I smiled softly.Edward was the most talented psychiatrist in Bellmont. Years ago, while serving time in prison, I

Seeing that I was ignoring her, Pearl gripped her fists tight, her eyes burning with humiliated rage."Ms. Carter, I'm not lying to you! Alex is nothing but a calculating, freeloading leech! You really need to be careful with him. You can't trust a single word he says!"Do you have any idea what he did back then? Just to sell his paintings, he didn't hesitate to use his looks to seduce rich older women into buying his work!""Shut up!"To everyone's surprise, Lilian was the first to blow up."My daddy's paintings are priceless! He's a famous painter in Eldermere! I won't let you insult him like that! Do you have any idea how hideous you look right now? You're just like those disgusting men who try to climb into my mommy's bed! How gross!"Lilian shot Pearl a look of pure disgust, then pinched her nose. "To think Daddy actually risked everything for a person like you back then. I feel so sorry for him!"Pearl's chest heaved violently from sheer humiliation and anger.Richard, me

I couldn't stand seeing Catherine and Lilian look at me like that, so I threw my hands up in defeat. "Alright, alright. It really doesn't hurt."With me easing the mood, the doctor visibly relaxed quite a bit. After finishing his examination, he turned to Catherine and reported, "Mr. Foster is doing fine. The scrape on his hand is a bit severe, but I'll use the absolute best ointment to ensure it leaves no scar."Catherine remained silent.Only I knew that this quiet reserve was the calm before her storm. As the main instigator behind all this, Pearl was sweating bullets.Who could have guessed that the ex-fiance she abandoned years ago had somehow turned into the husband of her boss? She desperately wanted to offer an explanation, yet watching the intimacy between Catherine and me stirred a flare of jealousy deep in her chest. That implicit sense of possessiveness shot up to its absolute peak right at this moment. Still, for the sake of the Moran family's future, she didn't da

The handful of people who had gone to the airport with Pearl were shaking so violently they had to lean against tables for support. The "freeloading loser" they had spent the last few days mocking was actually Catherine's husband. I was the very VIP they had wasted hours waiting for at the airport. They hated themselves for not connecting the dots back then. But I had literally told them I was Catherine's husband at the airport. They just refused to believe me. Even though I looked identical to the photograph, they had still brushed it off. They deeply regretted what they'd done and wished they could disappear.Yet right as the entire room fell dead silent, a guy who clearly couldn't read the room strolled forward."Alex, where on earth did you hire these two actors? They're not bad. Want me to hook them up with an agency? They might even land a gig overseas. Showing up in some non-brand, bargain-bin outfit pretending to be Catherine? Man, you're killing me here."You're just a

The emotionless little girl's face lit up with delight the moment she saw me, and she sprinted straight into my arms."Daddy, I've been a good girl these past few days. I've listened to Mommy and stayed out of trouble. Wait, why is there so much blood on your hand? Did you lose control of yourself again? Don't be scared. Mommy and I are right here with you."Acting like a little grown-up, she buried herself in my chest and gently patted my back, soothing the meltdown that had been threatening to erupt inside me.Daddy. That single word instantly pulled every pair of eyes in the room off the little girl and locked them onto me.The guests who had been coldly standing by, watching me get humiliated moments ago, all stared with wide eyes.I wiped the blood off my palm against my clothes, then reached out to pinch my daughter Lilian Foswick's cheek lovingly. "I'm fine, Lilian. You're such a big girl now, already taking care of Mommy."Heartbroken, Lilian pulled my hand close, gentl
