Inside the building, Ethan came walking quickly, almost jogging to get closer to her.

“Hey! Ariel!” he called out.

She turned her head and gave him a quick smile. “Hi, Ethan. I'm almost late for my first class. I'll talk to you later, okay?”

He blinked his eyes, looking a little surprised. “Oh. Uh, sure. Yeah, see you later.”

As she continued walking away, he stood there watching her, looking completely puzzled. This wasn't the Ariel he was used to seeing. She seemed to be smiling more, blushing rather. It gave him a strange, uncomfortable feeling in his chest.

________

When Ariel entered Professor Julia's lecture hall, about half of the seats were already taken, and the time was just five minutes past the hour.

“Ms. Anthony,” Professor Julia's voice echoed through the room, sounding harsh and critical. “It seems you are late to my class once again.”

Ariel stopped walking for a moment, an apologetic look on her face. “I’m really sorry, Professor. It's only five minutes past the start time.”

“I don’t care, being late is being late.” Professor Julia said abruptly. “Please make an effort to be on time in the future.”

Ariel quietly found an empty seat and sat down. Not even ten minutes had passed into the lecture when Professor Julia's voice suddenly interrupted the lesson again.

“Ms. Anthony. I would appreciate it if you would not disturb the class by speaking during my lecture.”

Ariel blinked in surprise. “I was simply asking the person next to me if I could borrow a pen…”

“Do not talk back to me!” Professor Julia said sharply. “You will write a ten page assignment on how feminist ideas have developed in visual art, and you need to hand it in by tomorrow morning. If you don't, you will lose all the points you can get for participating in class this semester.”

Ariel's mouth opened slightly in shock. “What? That's…”

“Unfair?” Professor Julia asked in a cold tone. “Consider it a lesson about being on time and behaving properly in class.”

Ariel didn't say anything. She just nodded her head and looked down at the notebook in front of her.

Ariel could hear the girls sitting behind her whispering to each other, “serves her right.”

________

Back at her house, Ariel was focused on working on the assignment Professor Julia had given her when Daniel came into her room.

“Hey,” he said softly. “I heard that Professor Julia gave you a punishment today. Would you like some help with that paper?”

She looked up from her laptop, a surprised expression on her face. “You would do that?”

“Yeah, of course. As long as you tell me what you did to make her angry. You've never had any problems with professors before.”

She smiled gratefully. “Thank you, Daniel. That would be so helpful. As for Professor Julia, I really didn't do anything wrong. I was only five minutes late to class, and then I asked the person next to me if I could borrow a pen. After that, she accused me of interrupting her lecture.”

“It sounds like she might be upset about something else and was just taking her frustration out on you.” Daniel commented.

“Well, that's her issue, not mine. All I know is that I didn't do anything wrong.” Ariel replied.

They sat down together on her bed, and he turned her laptop so that he could see the screen.

“So... there are rumors going around,” he said in a casual tone.

She looked up at him, a questioning look in her eyes. “About what?”

“About you. And Professor Grayson. People are saying they saw you getting out of his car.”

Ariel sighed softly. “It wasn't like that at all. I was running late for class, and he offered me a ride. That's all there was to it.”

Ariel couldn’t tell her brother that she had passed out due to a fever and ended up spending the night in her professor’s apartment.

Daniel gave a small nod, but his eyes remained focused on the laptop screen. “Right. I mean, it would be a little strange anyway, dating a professor.”

Ariel became a little tense. “There is absolutely nothing going on between us. Seriously.”

“Okay,” he said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. “I understand.”

Daniel had always been a kind and caring brother to Ariel. But recently, there was something more in the way he looked at her. Something possessive.

__________

The following morning, Ariel made sure to arrive at the university early and placed her completed assignment into Professor Julia's designated submission tray. But just as she was about to knock on Professor Julia's office door, she heard the sound of voices coming from inside the room.

She stopped and listened. It was Luther's voice, and he sounded very angry.

“That was a completely unacceptable misuse of your authority, Julia,” he said, his voice low and tight with barely controlled anger. “Punishing Ariel for something as small as borrowing a pen? A ten-page paper due overnight? That's not teaching. That's personal hatred.”

“I have no idea what you're suggesting,” Julia replied, her voice calm and cold. “She was being disruptive in class. She was also late. I treat all of my students equally.”

“No, you don't,” Luther said sharply. “You single her out specifically. This had better be the last time you do something like this. I won't allow you to use her as someone to take your anger out on again.”

“Oh really? And why is that, Luther?” Julia's voice became louder. “Because she spent the night at your apartment yesterday? Because you drove her to the university the next morning?”

There was a moment of silence.

Ariel's heart began to beat rapidly in her chest.

“You need to be very careful about the implications of your words,” Luther said in a low, threatening tone. “Your jealousy is quite obvious.”

“Jealous? Of that little girl?” Julia scoffed.

“I don't know, Julia. You tell me.” Luther retorted.

The first light of the day began to fill the room. Ariel stirred against the pillow, her skin still clammy from the fever that had kept her curled up in bed last night. The small, damp cloth that had been resting on her forehead had become a little dry and slipped down as she slowly opened her eyes. The ceiling fan spun gently above, and for a moment, she forgot where she was… until the scent of coffee drifted into the room, mixed with the sound of someone humming softly. And then it all came back to her. She was in Luther’s apartment. The realization settled slowly, not in a bad way, but it still made her feel a little uneasy. She pushed herself up gently and rubbed her eyes, then frowned. “How did I not notice I had a fever?” she said quietly to herself, her voice sounding rough and scratchy. She gently touched the place on her forehead where the damp cloth had been lying. “Oh, this is just wonderful.” She continued, a hint of frustration in her tone. “Now I’m becoming more of a

As she stepped out into the cool night air, he leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “I’d love to do this again.” he said, hopeful in a way that made her stomach twist from guilt. Ariel hesitated. “Ethan... I appreciate tonight. Really. But I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I’m not looking for anything romantic. I see you as a friend. Just a friend.” The gentleness of her voice did nothing to soften the rejection. His smile faltered but he nodded slowly, disappointment flickering across his features before he masked it with understanding. “Okay. I can do that. Just friends.” She hated the way his eyes dimmed, the slight slump of his shoulders. But she had to make things clear from the start. Leading him on would only cause more pain later. She thanked him again for dinner and watched as he drove away. Before she turned and entered the building. _________ The next day, Ariel sat with Stacy in the cafeteria. Her tray was untouched. “Still thinking about last night?” Stacy te

Ariel stood outside the gym, her arms were crossed tightly against her chest as if shielding herself from the world. Her clenched jaw told everyone to stay away… unless they were Stacy. “You're super pissed at me, aren’t you?” Stacy said cautiously as she came out of the gym and walked towards her friend. Ariel didn't answer immediately. Her quietness showed how she felt more than talking would. Stacy chewed on her bottom lip. “Look, I didn’t mean to upset you. I thought I was helping.” Ariel slowly turned her head, eyes narrowed. “Helping, really? By agreeing to a date I didn’t want to go on? You didn't even wait for me to respond.” Stacy winced. “Okay, I know. I was out of line. I just thought you could have fun. You know, someone to cheer you up and put a smile on that grumpy face of yours. And Ethan’s not exactly a bad option.” Ariel sighed, rubbing her temple. “Look Stacy, you can’t just decide things for me. I’ve got enough people trying to run my life as it is.” her voice

Later that week, despite the doctor's advice to rest, Ariel found herself sitting in the familiar lecture hall. Despite her excuse of not wanting to miss classes, deep down she knew that the only reason she was here was because she missed Luther. She missed seeing his face and hearing him speak. “Ariel?” Luther called out to her as the class dismissed. “Yes, Professor Grayson,” she replied. “Stay behind. I’d like to speak with you briefly.” He said, flipping through notes. Ariel nodded, sitting back down as everyone else left the hall. “What are you doing here?” Luther asked as soon as the class was empty. “Um, attending class?” Ariel spoke nervously. “You should be resting.” “I already missed three days. That’s enough.” He walked towards her. “Your stitches… your head… what if…” “I’m fine.” She met his gaze. “I’m not made of glass, don’t worry.” He sighed, stretching out his hand to lift her chin. “Are you sure you’re good?” “Yes sir. I’m perfectly fine.” Luther withdre

Ariel’s eyes fluttered open, they felt heavy due to all the painkillers. She winced in pain as she tried to sit up, her head throbbed with every movement, and it took her a full minute to realize where she was. The hospital. Her hand instinctively reached for the bandage wrapped around her head, her finger brushing over the thick gauze. The memory of what happened at the bar surged through her… the drunk customer, Luther’s furious voice, and then… the bottle. She remembered the sharp pain she felt. And then… “Please don’t leave me, Anna.” Anna. The name echoed in her head. Who was Anna? Ariel’s heart raced, not just from confusion, but from the way Luther had said it. Broken. Desperate. Like it came from somewhere deep inside him… a place he’d sealed off from the rest of the world. She wanted to ask him. She needed to. The door creaked open softly, breaking through her chain of thoughts. Luther stepped in, his eyes locked onto her face immediately. For a brief moment, somethi

Later that evening, as Ariel stepped into the bar, the smell of cigarettes and the sounds of laughter filled the air. She took a deep breath, adjusting her black shirt.“Just serve drinks. Be polite. Don’t panic.” She murmured under her breath. The place was busier than she had expected for a weeknight. Every table was occupied… in the far corner, several poker tables were surrounded by serious faced players.“There you are!” Stacy appeared beside her, already dressed in the uniform… black pants and a fitted black button up shirt. “I was worried you might bail.”“I almost did.” Ariel admitted.“Well I’m glad you didn’t.”Stacy said, guiding her toward the bar. “Come on, let me introduce you to Kelvin. He’s the manager.”Kelvin turned out to be a surprisingly cool guy. He gave Ariel a quick rundown of her duties. Nothing she couldn’t handle, she thought with growing confidence.“Stick with Stacy for the first hour,” he advised. “Watch what she does and then you can start taking orders o

A few weeks later, Ariel walked to the lecture hall, her eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on a familiar figure walking ahead of her.“Stacy!” She called, waving. The girl in question grinned, her ginger curls bouncing with each step she took. Stacy was Ariel’s only friend aside from Daniel.“Do you have a minute?” Ariel smiled as she stopped in front of her.“For you? Always.” Stacy replied. “You okay? You look kinda… tense”“I’m fine.” Ariel replied quickly. “I just wanted to ask you something. Do you think you could help me find a part time job?”Stacy blinked, then broke into a mischievous smile. “Oh my goodness, Ariel. Is that why you're so tense?”Ariel nodded. “Kinda. I didn’t know how to ask you about it.”“We're friends, so feel free to ask for my help with anything. I never hesitate to ask you to help me when I need help, do I?”“That’s true,” Ariel admitted with a smile. “You had no problem asking me to proofread your entire sociology per at 3 AM last month.”“Exact

The loud scream that had sent students rushing through the halls belonged to none other than Professor Julia. She was sprawled across the floor, her face twisted in discomfort, she clutched her ankle as whispers of concern spread around her. Some students, and professors rushed forward to help, while others simply stood back, murmuring. “Is she okay?” A freshman girl whispered in concern.“I think she slipped…” another student mumbled, craning his neck to get a better view.“Wasn’t she standing over there a minute ago?”a skeptical voice cut through the crowd, pointing o a spot several feet away from where Professor Julia now lay.Julia didn’t care about the small crowd forming around her. The whole time her eyes were on him.Luther, who stood at a distance, tucked his hands in his pockets, his expression was unreadable. His eyes landed on her briefly, but there was no concern… no reaction at all. He didn’t see the need to go there since she was surrounded by students and professors…
