Chapter 4

Autor: Perfect Timing
For the next three days, my life was a living nightmare. Someone photoshopped my pictures to make me look like a thief, tagged me, and called me trash on social media. The posts spread like wildfire, with thousands of people sharing them.

Someone even put up a big poster outside my dorm and wrote in red ink. "You thief! Get off campus!"

The mouse jerked. "This is nothing compared to what you went through in your past life. At least you can still fight back this time."

I took a deep breath.

The mouse told me to check the hospitals.

I crouched in the stairwell leading to the rooftop and called the information line at the city's general hospital. After I gave them Adam's mom's name and the last four digits of her ID number, the person on the other end said, "There are no records of this patient being admitted in the past month."

I called a second, then a third, checking with every major hospital in the city to no avail.

There was no record of Adam's mom ever being hospitalized.

It had all been a lie.

I gripped my phone tightly.

The mouse buzzed. "Calm down. Tomorrow, go to the notary office and have the recording officially documented as evidence. Then go to the school's IT department and request the server-side upload logs for your cloud storage. No one can change those timestamps.

"Then when the investigation starts the day after tomorrow, let him finish telling all his lies first."

I did exactly what the mouse told me and got everything ready.

The night before the investigation, I laid all the evidence across my desk, from the group call recording and cloud login logs to the server timestamps and hospital records.

Each piece was a devastating blow.

The next day, the investigation began. The conference room was packed, with the associate dean, a representative from the university's academic committee, and a representative from the legal department present.

Adam sat across from me, his face haggard. His fingers trembled as he held his documents, and his eyes were red and swollen.

Vera sat beside him, her lips pursed, her face solemn.

The associate dean, James Pecker, spoke. "Adam, you start first."

Adam took a deep breath and began his most convincing performance yet, talking about the timeline, the screenshots of the files, Vera's statement, me threatening him, and also how I refused to help save his mom.

Every detail added up, making his story more heartbreaking and harder to find fault with.

By the end of it, he looked at me, tears dripping onto the table. "I just want to get back what belongs to me so my mom can get the treatment she needs… Felix, we used to be best friends. I really don't know why you're doing this to me…"

Adam lowered his head, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed.

Kent looked moved, while James frowned, his eyes full of sympathy. Everyone glared at me with contempt, as if expecting me to admit my guilt.

Adam slowly raised his head, unable to hide the smug look in his eyes, while Vera kept her head lowered, her fingers tightly intertwined, as if she were in deep pain.

Everyone thought I had nothing left to say.

Mr. Pecker looked at me. "Felix, Adam has finished speaking. Is there anything else you'd like to say? So far, you haven't submitted any evidence. If you have nothing else to add, we'll have to make a preliminary decision based on what we've seen so far."

The conference room was deathly quiet. My heart beat slowly.

The mouse buzzed again in my pocket. "Now!"

I stood up, bracing my hands against the table. "I have evidence." My voice was steady as I pulled the USB drive from my bag and walked over to the computer connected to the projector.

Only one video file was on it.

I pressed play.

The smugness in Adam's eyes froze, and his face became pale as a sheet.

Vera shot to her feet, knocking her chair back with a loud crash.

The police came pretty quickly. Three police cars pulled up at the corner of South Street, and five or six officers rushed into the basement. The evidence was clear as day. The door had been kicked in, a boning knife lay on the floor, and there were threatening messages from Adam on his phone. The police handcuffed Adam and hauled him to his feet.As Adam passed me, he struggled desperately, trying to turn around and bite me. "Felix, you bastard! I hope you rot in hell! You set me up!"The police hit him behind the knee with a baton and forced him into their vehicle. The lead officer glanced at Adam, who was bound tightly with zip ties, then looked at me. "Kid, you've got guts, and you didn't hold back either."My voice was calm. "He wanted to kill me. I had no choice but to defend myself.""It's self-defense, huh? Come on, you're coming with us to the station to give a statement."At the police station, I recounted everything that had happened, including Adam's previous attemp

Adam's hoarse voice came faintly through the door. " Felix, I know you're in there."I didn't respond. "Come out. We need to talk." Adam knocked on the door, his blows light but deliberate. "I was wrong. I really had nowhere else to turn. The debt collectors want to cut off my hands. Can you lend me the prize money? Just do it for old times' sake."I gripped the stun baton and stared coldly through the crack in the door."You're just going to stay quiet, huh?" Adam's voice changed, becoming dark and slightly maniacal. "You hate me for wanting to take your prize money. But do you think I don't know how much your family got for that house when it was demolished? You got more than 3 million dollars, right?"I asked you to lend me 20,000 dollars, but you refused no matter what. If you'd given me the money to pay off my gambling debts sooner, would any of this have happened? Felix, you drove me to the edge! You ruined my life! What gives you the right to take the money and live a good

The sunlight outside was so bright I had to squint. The mouse buzzed in my pocket. "Well done. But don't let your guard down. Adam owes money to online lenders. He was counting on the prize money to pay them back, but now that hope is gone. He'll go crazy."I walked straight out of the office building. "Where to?""Go to the police station and file a report. Then go to the bank, withdraw some cash, rent a basement on South Street, and buy a stun gun for self-defense."Without hesitation, I hailed a cab and headed toward the police station. When I arrived, I handed the officers all the original evidence of Adam's harassment, defamation, and attempt to defraud me of the 20,000-dollar prize money. There was more than enough for the police to open a case.By the time I finished my statement, it was nighttime. I sat on the roadside bench and logged into our school forum.I didn't need to make a post to clarify anything. The university's official announcement was already at the top o

The farce wasn't over yet. I wasn't done playing my cards.I took out the call logs and handed them to Ryan. "Mr. Stewart, you went to college with Adam's father. Adam said his mom was in the ICU and that he desperately needed the prize money to save her life."I pointed to the numbers on the papers. "These are the search records for all the top hospitals in the city. I called every one of them and gave them his mom's name and ID number."My gaze fixed on Adam. "Not a single hospital has any record of her being admitted."Adam pounced on me and tried to snatch the call logs away, but the security guards held him back.Mr. Stewart's expression hardened. He pulled out his phone and called Adam's father, Jeremy Page, and put him on loudspeaker. The phone rang twice before Mr. Page answered, with the sound of cards being shuffled in the background."Hey, Ryan, why the sudden call?" Mr. Page's voice was loud and hearty.Mr. Stewart's hand trembled. "Jeremy, how is your wife feeling?

The video appeared on the projector, showing my laptop screen. The time in the bottom right showed 11:52 pm.Then I opened the folder for Adam's competition account. There was only his sketch, first draft, and final draft. None of the so-called seven process files Adam submitted as evidence today were there. The video continued playing, showing me shutting down the laptop, putting it in my backpack, leaving the dorm, going downstairs, and walking into the security office. Then Wayne appeared on the screen, and I handed him the laptop. With that, the one-take video ended, with no cuts. For a moment, nobody spoke.Adam's lips trembled, his nails digging into the table. He rose suddenly, his voice hoarse as he shouted, "T-This is fake! This video is fake! You deleted my files before recording it!"I ignored him and opened the second file on the USB drive. "This is the security footage that the school security department obtained, showing the outside of Building 6 and the security o
