I immediately started a group call.Irene Dawson picked up almost instantly. "Felix, it's going to be midnight soon. Do you need to talk to me about anything?"I took a deep breath, trying to keep my tone calm. "Ms. Dawson, Adam's mom was hospitalized. He told me to log into his account to submit the competition work. Does this go against the rules?"Just then, my advisor, Colby Jackman, joined the call. He sounded sleepy. "What's wrong? What happened?"Ms. Dawson's tone turned serious. "This is a national academic competition. It's a serious violation for contestants to use each other's accounts. Adam, you can contact the organizing committee to request an extension, or give me your account password, and I'll submit it for you."Adam Page stayed silent for a few seconds. Then his sobs grew louder, his voice sounding even more pitiful. "Ms. Dawson, I was so worried about my mom that I forgot my password. Felix, I went to your dorm and logged into my account yesterday. I think your

The next day, I arrived at the meeting room at 10:00 am.Adam was sitting beside Vera, his eyes red, while Vera patted his hand reassuringly. When she saw me, her eyes flickered before a stern expression quickly took over.Ms. Dawson, Mr. Jackman, and the disciplinary committee member, Kent Perry, sat on both sides, with grim expressions on their faces.I took a seat as the mouse jerked and told me, "Let her talk first."Adam began giving his statement. He laid out the seven screenshots of the files on the table. Every file had a creation date earlier than the date I submitted my competition entry. He looked up at me, his voice hoarse. "Felix, I really thought of you as my best friend. Why did you do this to me? My mom is still in the ICU. I really need that money…"Adam lowered his head, his shoulders shaking. His fists were clenched tight, his knuckles white."Come on now, don't get worked up." Vera handed him a tissue before glancing at me.I had never seen her look at me th

The video appeared on the projector, showing my laptop screen. The time in the bottom right showed 11:52 pm.Then I opened the folder for Adam's competition account. There was only his sketch, first draft, and final draft. None of the so-called seven process files Adam submitted as evidence today were there. The video continued playing, showing me shutting down the laptop, putting it in my backpack, leaving the dorm, going downstairs, and walking into the security office. Then Wayne appeared on the screen, and I handed him the laptop. With that, the one-take video ended, with no cuts. For a moment, nobody spoke.Adam's lips trembled, his nails digging into the table. He rose suddenly, his voice hoarse as he shouted, "T-This is fake! This video is fake! You deleted my files before recording it!"I ignored him and opened the second file on the USB drive. "This is the security footage that the school security department obtained, showing the outside of Building 6 and the security o

The sunlight outside was so bright I had to squint. The mouse buzzed in my pocket. "Well done. But don't let your guard down. Adam owes money to online lenders. He was counting on the prize money to pay them back, but now that hope is gone. He'll go crazy."I walked straight out of the office building. "Where to?""Go to the police station and file a report. Then go to the bank, withdraw some cash, rent a basement on South Street, and buy a stun gun for self-defense."Without hesitation, I hailed a cab and headed toward the police station. When I arrived, I handed the officers all the original evidence of Adam's harassment, defamation, and attempt to defraud me of the 20,000-dollar prize money. There was more than enough for the police to open a case.By the time I finished my statement, it was nighttime. I sat on the roadside bench and logged into our school forum.I didn't need to make a post to clarify anything. The university's official announcement was already at the top o

The police came pretty quickly. Three police cars pulled up at the corner of South Street, and five or six officers rushed into the basement. The evidence was clear as day. The door had been kicked in, a boning knife lay on the floor, and there were threatening messages from Adam on his phone. The police handcuffed Adam and hauled him to his feet.As Adam passed me, he struggled desperately, trying to turn around and bite me. "Felix, you bastard! I hope you rot in hell! You set me up!"The police hit him behind the knee with a baton and forced him into their vehicle. The lead officer glanced at Adam, who was bound tightly with zip ties, then looked at me. "Kid, you've got guts, and you didn't hold back either."My voice was calm. "He wanted to kill me. I had no choice but to defend myself.""It's self-defense, huh? Come on, you're coming with us to the station to give a statement."At the police station, I recounted everything that had happened, including Adam's previous attemp
