Chapter 004 Marry Me!

~Rosemary~

"What! We just lost our child and that's all you can say?"

Max raised his voice. "What else do you want me to say? How am I even sure the pregnancy was mine? We don’t meet often, after all."

"It was yours! I never cheated on you, Max. And you know it!" I yelled, my chest tightening.

"Anyway, that doesn't change the fact that Amani is the one I want to be with. Sign the divorce agreement and send it over. I'll send your belongings. Also, don't ever call this number again!"

With that, he hung up.

Tears blurred my vision as I stared at the phone screen in horror. It was bad enough that he impregnated my twin sister. Now, he accused me of cheating and laughed at my miscarriage.

He blamed me for covering up his own mistakes, I knew. But who made him such a coward?

It was all because of one person, Amani. My twin sister, why couldn’t she just allow me to be happy for once?

As kids, Amani was favored by everyone, even by our parents. Since she was hotter, more beautiful, and even more intelligent, she got the best of the best. I was left to live on basic life neccessities and was regarded as the “other twin” even though I was older.

On our sixteenth birthday, Amani was gifted a brand-new Mercedes SUV while I got the old rickety truck that the gardener sometimes used to transport sheared flowers and dirt.

Regardless, I didn't ask for much as a child. In fact, I had never wanted anything more than I wanted Max Smith. I had been loving that man for almost half of my life.

When we got married after graduating from college, I thought nothing could go wrong. Amani went to Stanford 4 years ago and left Max with me. I spent all of my college days with him. Little did I know that Amani had been lurking in the shadows all along.

My stomach twisted in knots as I thought about Max flying over to California just to be with Amani. An image of them having sex gave me a splitting headache. My blood also boiled as Max's last statement to me echoed in my ears.

That bastard wants a divorce, right? Fine, I will give it to him!

After gritting my teeth for a long time, I dipped my hand into my pocket. It was then I realized I wasn't wearing the dress from that night.

“Wait, did you change my dress for me?” I asked the handsome man, crossing my arms over my bosom.

He smiled. “No, the nurses did.”

The air became awkward. I coughed and scratched the back of my neck in embarrassment. “So… do you know where my dress is?"

"Oh..." He turned to the tiny wardrobe nearby and brought out a hanger. "Here you go. I had it washed and ironed."

"Thanks, you are--" I began, then broke off when I didn't find anything in the pockets.

"Looking for this?" he suddenly asked.

I looked up again, only to find that he was holding up a document. I snatched it from his hand. It was the divorce agreement. I had shoved it into my pocket while running after Max that night.

"Got a pen?"

As soon as he handed me a pen, I scribbled my signature on the document. Tears flooded my eyes once again. But I fought them back before any could drop.

"Are you okay?" he asked, leaning over.

I forced a smile. "Never been better."

"You don't look like it..."

A frown contorted my face. "How am I supposed to look? Should I jump for joy after finding out my husband impregnated my twin sister and then asked me for a divorce?"

His worried expression turned to pity. With a sigh, he said, "I'm so sorry to hear that."

An hour later, a delivery came in for me. It consisted of two suitcases and a duffel bag. As soon as I saw them, I knew they were from Max. He had wasted no time in sending my things. He also requested the signed divorce papers.

That jerk!

In confusion and rage, I clutched my head with both hands while staring at my stuff. Where do I go from here? How could Max? Did he think he could just throw me away without any consequences? Did he think I would just disappear into thin air while he enjoyed life with Amani?

My anger doubled. I sank my fingers into the mattress, thinking of all the years I wasted loving Max. "Cheating bastard! Piece of shit! Bottom barrel man!"

"Hey, you okay?" A voice sounded.

I turned to find Gerald staring at me with an unreadable expression. An idea instantly popped into my mind as I regarded his handsome face and tall figure.

"Marry me."

"What?" he laughed, pulling back in surprise.

I repeated, "Marry me."

"I heard you the first time, but you are joking, right?"

Snorting, I pointed at my swollen face. "Look at me? Do I look like I have got time for jokes? Marry me and I'll make sure you're compensated for your troubles. You look like you could really use some cash."

The amused expression on his face deepened at my words. He rubbed his nose and turned to the window. We shared a weird silence. Just when I was about to speak up, he turned to me again. "Okay, let's get married."

"Really?" I couldn't believe it.

He nodded. "Why not? You are an interesting person, and you will pay me money, right? Where do I sign?"

Three hours later, Gerald and I walked into the county clerk's office to register our marriage. After I signed the form, I pressed my hand over it and looked at my new groom intently.

"What?" he asked, raising a brow.

"You still have time to back out. Once you sign this, there's no going back. Are you sure?"

With a scoff, he shoved my hand away from the document, lowered his body, and signed it without uttering a word.

And just like that, I was married again. But this time to a total stranger!
