Chapter 1

Elena Carlson went dead silent for three seconds.

"Ms. Arnault, don't you have anything better to do at college?"

I cleared my throat. "Just check!"

She sighed. "Fine. I'll look into it. Give me three days."

Satisfied, I hung up and congratulated myself on some top-tier risk management.

As for Peggy stealing my photos for online dating?

If she wasn't worried, why should I be?

Just then, Peggy walked in.

She grabbed her phone, instantly on edge. "Aria, you didn't go through my phone, did you?"

I waved her off. "Why would I? Got some big secret on there?"

She relaxed and gave me a smug look.

"Fine, I'll tell you. My boyfriend is the Arnault heir.

"You know Arnault Corp in Rivera, right? And don't even think about going after him.

"He only loves me. He's way out of your league."

I smiled.

I'd already wondered if something was off with her boyfriend.

Now I was pretty sure he was just some bargain-bin romance scammer.

I copied one of his favorite lines. "Right, right. He'd pick you over anyone. Even his own mom."

Peggy snorted. "Glad you get it."

Then she walked out.

I flopped onto my bed, weirdly emotional.

Two months of following her relationship drama, and somehow I was part of it.

Still, watching Peggy put on a show every day was honestly better than bingeing a series.

By that afternoon, she'd completely dropped the act.

She might as well've had "Mrs. Arnault" stamped across her forehead.

I was heading out for my tutoring job while she lounged in the dorm eating chips.

"Going to wait tables again? My boyfriend says even the janitors at Arnault Corp make four grand a month.

"You should apply after graduation. Since we're roommates, maybe I'll put in a good word."

I tied my shoes without looking at her. "I'm good."

She scoffed. "Why are you so stuck-up? A small-town nobody who can't even recognize a designer logo would need insane luck just to get anywhere near the Arnault family."

I didn't bother answering.

'Guess I was born insanely lucky.'

The custom cashmere coat my mom had sent from Milan last week alone could've paid for a lifetime of snacks.

But Peggy had no clue.

She only recognized flashy logos, and everything in my closet was custom-made.

The next night was even better.

When I got back, Peggy had her boyfriend on speaker.

"Baby, I got you that limited-edition Hermès bag you wanted!

"I even checked with the sales associate. It'll be delivered to your school next week!"

Peggy practically squealed and shoved her phone in my face. "Hear that? Limited-edition Hermès. You've probably never even seen one, huh?"

"I haven't."

My mom hated their designs, so we never bought Hermès.

Peggy put her hands on her hips. "A broke loser like you will never even step inside Hermès!

"Once I marry into the Arnault family, I'll wear each bag once and toss it. Maybe I'll let you dig through my trash."

Okay, now she was getting annoying.

I turned to grab some water, but she kept going.

"What's with the attitude? I'm being generous, and you can't even say thanks?"

She grabbed my sleeve. "Be honest. You're jealous, aren't you?"

I frowned. "Jealous of what?"

"My rich boyfriend! I'm gonna be Mrs. Arnault!" she said like it was obvious. "You bust your ass for a thousand bucks a month.

"One of my boyfriend's belts costs more than six months of your pay!"

I wasn't wasting energy arguing.

"Yeah. Sure."

All I cared about was the report Elena was bringing me tomorrow.

Tuesday afternoon, Carl asked me to stop by his law firm.He was on the phone when I got there and waved me into a chair. When he hung up, he slid a document across the desk."Bobby Todd's trial is next month."Prosecutors are reaching out to all the victims to testify. Peggy too."I flipped through a few pages.Bobby's confession was tucked inside. After getting arrested in Ridgeport, he'd cracked fast.Probably figured there was no point fighting it.Hoping for a lighter sentence, he confessed to everything."Will Peggy testify?""Hard to say." Carl leaned back in his chair. "She's not doing great."She got expelled, all her loans are overdue, and debt collectors are after her."And her mom..."He paused."She got out of the hospital yesterday. The doctor says she can't handle much stress."She called Peggy."Didn't say she forgave her, but she didn't block her again."I put down the file.Carl kept going."Five grand of the money Peggy sent Bobby came from her mo

At seven Monday morning, Peggy's post vanished. The school didn't delete it.Neither did I.She deleted the burner account herself, along with every post and photo. At 7:08, Elena dropped a screenshot in the group chat.It was a collection notice.[Your loan is overdue. If payment is not made within three days, legal action will begin.]Then Elena added:[All her online loans are overdue now. The collectors even called her mom's workplace.]Then another message came through.[Her mom has high blood pressure. The collectors called her more than a dozen times, and she got so worked up she ended up in the hospital this morning.]I stared at the screen for a few seconds, then put my phone down and got ready.I still had two major classes that morning.During break, someone came over and held out her phone."Aria, that post's gone. Did Peggy delete it herself?""Yeah. I know."She lowered her voice."So... does that mean she really has nowhere left to go?"I glanced at her

By Friday afternoon, the post was still trending. It had already blown past a hundred million views, with over two thousand comments and more people piling in every day.Peggy added three more posts from the burner account.[I have more evidence I haven't released yet.][Aria isn't nearly as innocent as you think.][You've all been fooled.]Each one included another photo taken without my knowledge.Carl's Bentley outside the women's dorm.Elena and me walking down West Street after buying the bag.She even posted one of me standing in line for a ten-dollar meal at the dining hall. The caption?[Rich heiress eating a $10 meal. Who exactly is she putting on this act for?]The comments started splitting into camps. Some people were getting suspicious.[Isn't this burner literally Peggy? It sounds exactly like her.]Others were just there for the mess.[Who cares if it's true? I'm here for the rich-people drama.]A few people who actually knew what happened jumped in too.

It was almost seven when I got back to the dorm with Mom's bag.I had the room to myself.Peggy's bed was empty. Her whole side had been stripped clean.Even the neon sticky notes spelling out "Mrs. Arnault" were gone. All that was left was a pale rectangle on the wall. Her succulent still sat on the windowsill.Half the leaves were shriveled. No one had watered it in days.I opened my closet to change. When I reached for a sweatshirt in the back, my fingers brushed something crumpled.A note.Peggy's handwriting.[Peggy, when you become Mrs. Arnault, the first thing you'll do is rub it in Aria's face!]I stared at it for a few seconds. The writing was crooked, and the last "a" trailed off. She'd pressed so hard the pen had poked a tiny hole through the paper.I crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash. My phone buzzed.Elena had started a group chat called [Operation Takedown].Just the three of us—Elena, Carl, and me.Then the messages started flying.[Zayn's be

Wednesday afternoon, the university finally released its disciplinary decision. The auditorium was packed. People were even standing in the aisles.Dr. Bennett read the statement from the stage, his voice echoing through the mic."Design student Peggy Slade used another student's photos on social media."She fabricated chat logs and transfer screenshots to falsely accuse a fellow student."She also hid her true financial situation to receive need-based financial aid."She misused a large amount of money while taking out online loans. These actions are serious violations of university policy."Peggy Slade is expelled effective immediately. Her enrollment is revoked, and all financial aid and merit scholarships she received must be repaid."The auditorium went dead silent.Hundreds of people sat there without a sound.I checked my phone.Elena had dropped a screenshot in the group chat.Peggy's resale account had been suspended after users reported her for selling luxury good

Peggy didn't show up for class Monday. Her bed was empty. Her bedding was dumped on the floor, closet doors wide open, with only a few hangers left. The rented designer outfit sat neatly folded on the chair, tags still on.A girl across the hall walked by with her shower caddy and slowed down."Aria, um... are you really the Arnault heiress?""Yeah.""But you were working part-time every day...""I wanted the experience."She gave me a thumbs-up and kept walking.Everyone in class looked at me differently now.I sat by the window through both morning classes, with two empty seats on either side. Not because anyone was avoiding me.More like they were giving me VIP space.During break, someone came over. "Uh, is Arnault Corp hiring interns?"Another person held up the video of Peggy getting dragged out. "How much did she scam you out of?"I waved them off."Wait for the school's official statement."At lunch, Elena texted me.[Peggy spent the night with campus securit
