Chapter 1

Elena Carlson went dead silent for three seconds."Ms. Arnault, don't you have anything better to do at college?"I cleared my throat. "Just check!"She sighed. "Fine. I'll look into it. Give me three days."Satisfied, I hung up and congratulated myself on some top-tier risk management. As for Peggy stealing my photos for online dating? If she wasn't worried, why should I be?Just then, Peggy walked in.She grabbed her phone, instantly on edge. "Aria, you didn't go through my phone, did you?"I waved her off. "Why would I? Got some big secret on there?"She relaxed and gave me a smug look."Fine, I'll tell you. My boyfriend is the Arnault heir."You know Arnault Corp in Rivera, right? And don't even think about going after him."He only loves me. He's way out of your league."I smiled.I'd already wondered if something was off with her boyfriend. Now I was pretty sure he was just some bargain-bin romance scammer.I copied one of his favorite lines. "Right, right. He'd

I woke up early the next morning. Peggy was already glued to her phone again.Outside the east campus gate, a black Maybach was waiting.Elena stood beside it, waving at me. Duncan Ray, our family butler, was with her.I sighed. "Elena, this is your idea of keeping a low profile?"Duncan opened the door, and I slid in.Elena gave me an awkward smile and handed me a tablet. "Ms. Arnault, the investigation's done. You're the Arnault family's only heir. I personally checked the birth and family records."I leaned back.Well, that settled it.***Over breakfast, Elena pulled up the investigation records while Duncan caught me up."Ms. Arnault, your mom arranged for you to meet a lawyer. He just got back from overseas and is a close friend of your dad's, even though there's a pretty big age gap."It'd be safer to have a professional keep an eye on your roommate situation. She could be a risk."I added Carl McCoy on a messaging app. His profile pic was just a simple sketch.A me

Saturday night, Peggy skipped her usual call.Instead, she pulled two wrinkled fifties from her wallet and slapped them on my desk."Take it. Go to the water park tomorrow. A hundred bucks should cover the whole day."No one had ever thrown money at me before, so I just stared at it.Then she got bossy."My boyfriend's coming tomorrow. Don't even think about hanging around campus trying to steal him."And don't come back before nine, or I'm posting those pictures!"So she was paying me a hundred bucks to disappear for the day and keep my face from blowing up her whole lie.'Looks like the real show starts tomorrow.'Sunday morning, Peggy got up early and spent two whole hours getting ready.Rented designer clothes, cheap perfume, and enough foundation to frost a cake.As I headed out, she glared at me through the mirror. "Nine o'clock. Don't come back early!""Got it."I snapped a pic outside the water park and sent it to her. Then I went straight back to campus.Their d

The campus forum exploded the second I got back to the dorm.[Design Major Aria Arnault Is Living Off a Sugar Daddy—and Tried to Steal My Boyfriend!][Being broke is one thing, but some people are just trash. I have pics to prove it. Stay away from her!]She'd posted the Maybach photo.Thousands of comments were already piling up.I skimmed a few, then put my phone down.'Did everyone online just lose their brains?'Peggy walked in looking smug."See? That's what happens when you don't know your place.""You made those posts?""So what if I did?" She crossed her legs. "You tried to ruin my shot at marrying rich, so I'll make sure you get kicked out of this school."I smiled at the recording on my phone.'Wow. She's basically collecting evidence for me.'When she saw how calm I was, she pulled out a state ID and waved it in my face.Mine.It had still been in my bag that morning."I'm borrowing your ID for a few days," she said smugly. "You'd better behave, or the Arnaul

The door slammed into the wall so hard the pen holder on Dr. Bennett's desk rattled.Elena stood there in a black suit and three-inch heels.Ten bodyguards in black suits and shades lined up behind her.Her eyes swept the room. Then she saw the red marks on my wrist. Her face went ice-cold."Let go."Peggy flinched and loosened her grip, but didn't fully release me.She looked Elena up and down. "Who are you? And who even let you in here?"Elena ignored her and came straight to me.She crouched and gently turned my wrist over.Three red nail marks stood out against my skin. It wasn't serious, but my wrist was already swelling. She frowned. "Ms. Arnault, are you hurt anywhere else?""No."Peggy froze for a second, then burst out laughing."Oh my God! I remember you now!"Aria, isn't she the woman sharing your sugar daddy?"Wow. Nice act. How'd you get her to play along?"Dr. Bennett and Lauren exchanged a look, but with Elena and ten bodyguards standing there, neither

Peggy backed up and bumped into the desk.Elena stepped over and pulled my state ID straight from Peggy's pocket.Peggy lunged for it.Elena blocked her with one step and one look.Peggy stopped cold."Ms. Carlson." Dr. Bennett squeezed between us, smiling way too hard. "We'll take this very seriously! We'll form a special investigation committee immediately!""No rush." I slipped my ID away. "First, show me the 'evidence' Peggy gave you."I want to see exactly how she faked it."Lauren shakily pulled a stack of printouts from the bottom drawer and handed them over.I flipped through two pages and laughed. The chat logs were obviously fake. The profile icon was the wrong color. Dates didn't even match the days of the week. The payment screenshot? Fake too. The amount was in a completely different font. And the best part? She'd even gotten one digit of my user ID wrong. And Dr. Bennett had just slammed his desk and threatened to expel me over this garbage.I tossed the st

Same café.Carl was sitting in the same corner we'd used that morning. Two lemonades sat on the table, straws already in.I dropped into the seat and downed half my glass. My heart finally started slowing down."Show's over?""Show's over." I set down my drink. "Why are you still here?""Waiting to go over everything with you."He slid a manila envelope across the table."We've got everything on Zayn. Take a look, then decide how you want to end this."I opened the envelope. The first page had an ID photo.Buzz cut. Thinner than the "Zayn" I'd seen today. Dark circles under his eyes, an unlit cigarette between his lips, and a hard stare."Professional romance scammer. Real name Bobby Todd. Wanted for fraud."Two prior convictions—wire fraud and running an illegal investment scheme."Carl kept going."He uses six fake identities at once, mostly targeting female college students."Peggy's been his main target for three months, but she's definitely not the only one."He's

Peggy didn't show up for class Monday. Her bed was empty. Her bedding was dumped on the floor, closet doors wide open, with only a few hangers left. The rented designer outfit sat neatly folded on the chair, tags still on.A girl across the hall walked by with her shower caddy and slowed down."Aria, um... are you really the Arnault heiress?""Yeah.""But you were working part-time every day...""I wanted the experience."She gave me a thumbs-up and kept walking.Everyone in class looked at me differently now.I sat by the window through both morning classes, with two empty seats on either side. Not because anyone was avoiding me.More like they were giving me VIP space.During break, someone came over. "Uh, is Arnault Corp hiring interns?"Another person held up the video of Peggy getting dragged out. "How much did she scam you out of?"I waved them off."Wait for the school's official statement."At lunch, Elena texted me.[Peggy spent the night with campus securit

Wednesday afternoon, the university finally released its disciplinary decision. The auditorium was packed. People were even standing in the aisles.Dr. Bennett read the statement from the stage, his voice echoing through the mic."Design student Peggy Slade used another student's photos on social media."She fabricated chat logs and transfer screenshots to falsely accuse a fellow student."She also hid her true financial situation to receive need-based financial aid."She misused a large amount of money while taking out online loans. These actions are serious violations of university policy."Peggy Slade is expelled effective immediately. Her enrollment is revoked, and all financial aid and merit scholarships she received must be repaid."The auditorium went dead silent.Hundreds of people sat there without a sound.I checked my phone.Elena had dropped a screenshot in the group chat.Peggy's resale account had been suspended after users reported her for selling luxury good

Chapter 10

It was almost seven when I got back to the dorm with Mom's bag.I had the room to myself.Peggy's bed was empty. Her whole side had been stripped clean.Even the neon sticky notes spelling out "Mrs. Arnault" were gone. All that was left was a pale rectangle on the wall. Her succulent still sat on the windowsill.Half the leaves were shriveled. No one had watered it in days.I opened my closet to change. When I reached for a sweatshirt in the back, my fingers brushed something crumpled.A note.Peggy's handwriting.[Peggy, when you become Mrs. Arnault, the first thing you'll do is rub it in Aria's face!]I stared at it for a few seconds. The writing was crooked, and the last "a" trailed off. She'd pressed so hard the pen had poked a tiny hole through the paper.I crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash. My phone buzzed.Elena had started a group chat called [Operation Takedown].Just the three of us—Elena, Carl, and me.Then the messages started flying.[Zayn's be
