Chapter 2

Author: Echo
I went back to the dressing room. Not long after, a soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in."

The door opened, revealing Cassian, the director of the little show that just played out. He was already wearing the groom’s suit meant for Julian. Honestly, it fit him better and made him look far more imposing.

Our eyes met through the mirror.

I tilted my head. "Mr. Russo, can I help you?"

He took two steps closer, keeping a polite distance. "Miss Vitiello, can we speak privately?"

I waved the makeup artists out.

"Alright, what is it?"

He did not beat around the bush. "Julian ran away."

I played along, letting my smile freeze for a second, looking as if I had no idea.

"Ran away? What do you mean?"

"His mistress hidden in Brooklyn was kidnapped by rivals, and she is pregnant with his kid."

"He even wanted me to wear a mask and walk you down the aisle in his place."

I looked at his cold, handsome face, finding it hilarious.

He was the one egging Julian on just minutes ago, and now he was the one ratting him out.

I swallowed my smile and asked coldly, "Then why are you telling me? Are you two not best friends?"

Cassian took a step forward, his dress shoes sinking heavily into the carpet.

"What does the mafia value most? Loyalty and honor," he said, looking at me with absolute seriousness. "Even though Julian is an ally, I would never condone such a cowardly act. It is a massive insult to you and the Vitiello family."

I was a bit surprised.

The young, notoriously ruthless Don actually had such an old-school side to him?

"Thank you for your honesty, Don Russo." I turned toward the vanity and picked up my phone. "In that case, I will call off the wedding right now. I will announce to all the guests that the broken alliance is entirely Julian Simpson’s fault."

A large, warm hand suddenly clamped around my wrist.

Cassian’s grip was strong, his palm shockingly hot.

"There is no need to call off the wedding," he stared intensely at me, his voice low and raspy.

I frowned. "The groom ran away. If I do not cancel, am I supposed to walk the aisle alone?"

"Change the groom." Cassian’s gaze trailed from my cheek down to my collarbone, his eyes turning predatory. "Consider me. How about it?"

I froze. "Are you joking?"

"No, I am dead serious."

Cassian let go of my wrist, planting both hands on the edge of the vanity, effectively trapping me in his space.

He laid out his chips clearly, speaking fast but with fatal temptation.

"In terms of territory and business, the Russo family controls two-thirds of New York’s ports and underground trade. We are ten times stronger than the Simpsons."

"In terms of my personal life, I have no mistresses, no bastards. I am entirely clean."

"Most importantly, my position as Don is absolute. If you marry me, you are the undisputed wife of the Russo Don. You will share all my wealth and power."

When he finished, he looked at me nervously. His Adam’s apple bobbed, betraying his real emotions.

I looked at his handsome face so close to mine, calculating fast.

The deal was too good. So good it made absolutely no sense.

"This deal is a guaranteed win for me," I said, meeting his eyes sharply without backing down. "But what about you? Cassian Russo, what exactly are you trying to swallow from the Vitiello family? Or rather, which piece of my father's turf do you want?"

Cassian’s breath hitched.

"I do not want Vitiello turf!" he retorted, flustered.

"Then what is your angle?" I pressed. "Do not feed me that bullshit about solidifying alliances. The Russos do not need a marriage of convenience to secure their throne."

He lost his cool.

The calculated, cold demeanor he had just a second ago shattered.

His chest heaved. He suddenly reached out, cupping the back of my head and pulling me flush against him.

Our noses were almost touching.

He could not hold it back anymore and blurted out, "Because you are the only woman I have ever fucking wanted!"

Moving like a hunting panther that just caught its prey, he carried me in long strides straight to the master bedroom, kicking the door shut behind him and locking it."You were not even drunk?!" I finally realized, giving him a knowing look."I was. But seeing you sobered me right up," Cassian chuckled low in his throat, his eyes flashing with cunning and pure excitement. He pinned me against the door, his large hand wrapping around my wrist and guiding my hand straight into his open shirt.Under my palm were his burning, hard abs. With every breath, the solid muscles flexed ben

For three whole days, I stayed at my own apartment and ignored Cassian entirely. But my phone was bombarded with his texts all day, every day. Every single word was a desperate, pathetic apology and plea for attention.Along with the messages came a relentless flood of gifts to my door. The latest high-end designer collections, priceless jewelry, and even deeds to prime Manhattan real estate.I accepted all of it, tossing the diamonds onto my vanity, but did not text him back a single punctuation mark.By the fourth day, things got out of hand. The notoriously cold-blooded, untouchable Don of the Russo family used his personal, verified social media account to post the most high-profile public declaration of love imaginable."All my power and wealth combined do not equal a single smile from my wife, Serafina. Darling, I was wrong. Please forgive me."The post blew up the entire elite circle. His ruthless tyrant image shattered into a million pieces.Reading those lines, I finally could

In the morning, Cassian and I sat across from each other in the dining room, quietly eating breakfast. He was in a fantastic mood today, spreading jam on my toast and telling me funny stories about his men.The vibe was perfect.Right then, my phone screen lit up on the table.A long text from an unknown number."Serafina, do not be fooled by Cassian! He is a cold-blooded snake! He tricked me into leaving and stole my bride! That bastard planned the whole thing!"Beneath it was a video clip.It was Julian.I raised an eyebrow, my finger hovering over the screen.Cassian, sitting across from me, instantly sensed the shift in my mood.He caught a glimpse of the text and his face changed. He shot up and instinctively reached to grab my phone.I quickly pulled it away and glared at him. "What are you doing?"Cassian’s hand froze mid-air.His dominant aura vanished entirely. His massive frame even trembled slightly. He lowered his head, his voice dry. The next morning, sunlight slipped through the heavy curtains. While I was still half-asleep, a warm pressure landed on my lips. The kiss was incredibly light and careful, lingering for just a second before pulling away. Then, I heard soft footsteps and the click of the door.Cassian had gone to the gym to train.I opened my eyes and immediately saw a black velvet box on my pillow.Inside was a stunning necklace set with a rare black diamond. The pendant was the Russo family crest. The symbol of the Don's wife for generations.I smiled and put it on.When I went downstairs after getting ready, the long dining table was loaded with a lavish breakfast.Eggs Benedict, black truffle toast, pour-over Gesha coffee. "You actually photoshopped a picture to humiliate me?!" Julian screamed hysterically. "Using Cassian for a cheap joke? You think this gets back at me?!"So he thought it was photoshopped.Being this stupid was practically a talent. Before I could say a word, Cassian reached out and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.He leaned closer to the mic, using a perfectly crafted tone of mild disappointment and gentle scolding:"Julian, do not yell at Serafina. Taking your anger out on a woman just shows you have no spine."Dead silence on the other end. Then Julian’s voice cracked in absolute shock. "Cassian?! Why... why are you with her?!"Cassian did not answer him. Instead, he looked down at me, his eyes clear and innocent, lowering his voice into a soft, coaxing whisper: "Serafina, do not waste your time with emotionally unstable men. He will just ruin your mood."I could not stop my smirk."You are right." Meeting Cassian’s eager gaze, I hung up the phone without hesitatio

The door was slightly ajar.I stopped, listening through the crack as Cassian replied in a flat, even tone. "Relax. The wedding was a huge success. Everything went perfectly.""Thank God! Man, thank you so much!" Julian let out a massive sigh of relief, even sounding a bit smug. "Chloe and the baby are safe. I owe you big time!"A flicker of mockery flashed through Cassian’s eyes. He slowly spun his new wedding band on his finger. "No, Julian. I should be the one thanking you."With that, he hung up effortlessly.I could not help but chuckle and pushed the door open.Cassian whipped around. The moment he saw it was me, the cold calculation in his eyes melted instantly, replaced by a flash of hidden panic."What is wrong?"I had to admit, this wolf in sheep’s clothing was so scheming it was almost cute.I could not wait to see Julian’s face when he found out the truth.I smiled slightly. "Nothing, just need you to help me untie my dress."His eyes lit up. "Gladly."After the ceremony, C
