Chapter 1

"It is just a business deal. If my father did not want the Vitiello family's power, I would never marry her."

Julian’s suppressed complaints echoed clearly from behind the heavy velvet curtains of the balcony.

I held my champagne, tapping the glass lightly with my fingertips, completely unfazed.

As the sole heir to the Vitiello family, I knew full well this marriage was nothing more than an exchange of turf.

Whether Julian Simpson loved me or not was not even on my radar.

"Is that so? Seems like you really dislike your wife," a deep, magnetic, and dangerously smooth voice chimed in.

It was Cassian Russo.

Half an hour ago, Julian had brought this young Don of the Russo family over to introduce us.

When Cassian shook my hand, his thumb subtly stroked my skin, and his dark, burning gaze lingered on me just a second too long.

I was a little confused. As far as I knew, this was our first time meeting.

Before I could figure out what that look meant, the atmosphere on the balcony shifted drastically.

A frantic phone vibration pierced the air, followed by Julian’s panicked, cracking voice.

"Damn it! How could this happen... impossible!" Julian sounded frantic. "Cassian, Chloe got snatched by a rival crew!"

"Chloe?" Cassian’s voice did not even ripple.

"My girl! She is pregnant with my kid, barely two months along!" Julian was practically having a breakdown, tearing at his hair. "I have to go save her, but the wedding is about to start... my father will kill me!"

Dead silence fell over the balcony.

I took a sip of champagne, waiting to see what Julian would do next.

A moment later, Cassian spoke up. He sounded incredibly sincere, even showing a hint of brotherly sympathy. "If the marriage falls through, the Simpson family might still survive. But if a woman carrying your flesh and blood dies, Julian, you will live in guilt for the rest of your life."

Those words perfectly struck Julian’s weak nerve.

"But I cannot just ditch the wedding! The guests are all out there; the Vitiellos will tear me apart!" Julian rambled.

"You only have one life. A ceremony can be redone," Cassian said softly, like a siren luring a sailor, pushing him step by step. "If it were me, I would never let my woman and child get hurt."

"You are right... I have to go!" Julian panted heavily, suddenly grabbing onto a lifeline. "Cassian, you have to help me! We are about the same size. Put on a mask, walk down the aisle for me, and buy me two hours! Once I get Chloe, I will rush right back!"

The proposal was so absurd it was almost funny.

Having someone else stand in for your own wedding? Julian’s stupidity truly reached new heights.

Just as I was about to step out and confront Julian, Cassian spoke.

He let out a very light sigh, sounding incredibly torn and forced. "Julian, this is a betrayal to the Vitiello family. If we get caught, the fallout will be disastrous."

"Please, man! I will owe you my life!" Julian begged.

"...Fine." Cassian sounded completely helpless. "Take my car keys, use the secret passage in the back garden, and do not let anyone see you. I will handle things here."

"Thank you! Brother, I will make this up to you!"

"Wait... hold on."

Cassian stopped him.

Julian stiffened and looked back. "What is wrong, you are not backing out, are you?"

Cassian pointed at his suit. "Take off the tux, or you will not make it out."

Julian froze for a second, then stripped off his jacket without a second thought and shoved it into Cassian’s hands.

Frantic footsteps faded into the distance.

Standing behind the curtain, a mocking smirk tugged at my lips.

But compared to my runaway loser of a groom, I was suddenly a lot more interested in someone else.

Cassian Russo, the most powerful mafia Don in New York... why would he agree to such a ridiculous favor?

I did not buy for a second that he was just being a good guy.

What was his endgame?

The black Maybach glided smoothly to a stop in front of the main Russo estate. The second the car parked, Cassian—who had been a puddle of mush on me just seconds ago—suddenly sobered up completely. He kicked the door open, waved off his men trying to help, and effortlessly scooped me up into his arms."You—" I gasped, instinctively wrapping my arms around his neck.He did not even give me a second to process. Moving like a hunting panther that just caught its prey, he carried me in long strides straight to the master bedroom, kicking the door shut behind him and locking it."You were not even drunk?!" I finally realized, giving him a knowing look."I was. But seeing you sobered me right up," Cassian chuckled low in his throat, his eyes flashing with cunning and pure excitement. He pinned me against the door, his large hand wrapping around my wrist and guiding my hand straight into his open shirt.Under my palm were his burning, hard abs. With every breath, the solid muscles flexed ben

For three whole days, I stayed at my own apartment and ignored Cassian entirely. But my phone was bombarded with his texts all day, every day. Every single word was a desperate, pathetic apology and plea for attention.Along with the messages came a relentless flood of gifts to my door. The latest high-end designer collections, priceless jewelry, and even deeds to prime Manhattan real estate.I accepted all of it, tossing the diamonds onto my vanity, but did not text him back a single punctuation mark.By the fourth day, things got out of hand. The notoriously cold-blooded, untouchable Don of the Russo family used his personal, verified social media account to post the most high-profile public declaration of love imaginable."All my power and wealth combined do not equal a single smile from my wife, Serafina. Darling, I was wrong. Please forgive me."The post blew up the entire elite circle. His ruthless tyrant image shattered into a million pieces.Reading those lines, I finally could

In the morning, Cassian and I sat across from each other in the dining room, quietly eating breakfast. He was in a fantastic mood today, spreading jam on my toast and telling me funny stories about his men.The vibe was perfect.Right then, my phone screen lit up on the table.A long text from an unknown number."Serafina, do not be fooled by Cassian! He is a cold-blooded snake! He tricked me into leaving and stole my bride! That bastard planned the whole thing!"Beneath it was a video clip.It was Julian.I raised an eyebrow, my finger hovering over the screen.Cassian, sitting across from me, instantly sensed the shift in my mood.He caught a glimpse of the text and his face changed. He shot up and instinctively reached to grab my phone.I quickly pulled it away and glared at him. "What are you doing?"Cassian’s hand froze mid-air.His dominant aura vanished entirely. His massive frame even trembled slightly. He lowered his head, his voice dry. "Serafina, I am sorry... do not look. J

The next morning, sunlight slipped through the heavy curtains. While I was still half-asleep, a warm pressure landed on my lips. The kiss was incredibly light and careful, lingering for just a second before pulling away. Then, I heard soft footsteps and the click of the door.Cassian had gone to the gym to train.I opened my eyes and immediately saw a black velvet box on my pillow.Inside was a stunning necklace set with a rare black diamond. The pendant was the Russo family crest. The symbol of the Don's wife for generations.I smiled and put it on.When I went downstairs after getting ready, the long dining table was loaded with a lavish breakfast.Eggs Benedict, black truffle toast, pour-over Gesha coffee. All my absolute favorites.I paused.A memory flashed back from yesterday—after the wedding, Cassian quietly pulled my mother into a corner to chat.So he was asking about my preferences.I chuckled and sat down to eat.Night fell. New York’s neon lights glowed over the city.I me

"You actually photoshopped a picture to humiliate me?!" Julian screamed hysterically. "Using Cassian for a cheap joke? You think this gets back at me?!"So he thought it was photoshopped.Being this stupid was practically a talent. Before I could say a word, Cassian reached out and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.He leaned closer to the mic, using a perfectly crafted tone of mild disappointment and gentle scolding:"Julian, do not yell at Serafina. Taking your anger out on a woman just shows you have no spine."Dead silence on the other end. Then Julian’s voice cracked in absolute shock. "Cassian?! Why... why are you with her?!"Cassian did not answer him. Instead, he looked down at me, his eyes clear and innocent, lowering his voice into a soft, coaxing whisper: "Serafina, do not waste your time with emotionally unstable men. He will just ruin your mood."I could not stop my smirk."You are right." Meeting Cassian’s eager gaze, I hung up the phone without hesitatio

The door was slightly ajar.I stopped, listening through the crack as Cassian replied in a flat, even tone. "Relax. The wedding was a huge success. Everything went perfectly.""Thank God! Man, thank you so much!" Julian let out a massive sigh of relief, even sounding a bit smug. "Chloe and the baby are safe. I owe you big time!"A flicker of mockery flashed through Cassian’s eyes. He slowly spun his new wedding band on his finger. "No, Julian. I should be the one thanking you."With that, he hung up effortlessly.I could not help but chuckle and pushed the door open.Cassian whipped around. The moment he saw it was me, the cold calculation in his eyes melted instantly, replaced by a flash of hidden panic."What is wrong?"I had to admit, this wolf in sheep’s clothing was so scheming it was almost cute.I could not wait to see Julian’s face when he found out the truth.I smiled slightly. "Nothing, just need you to help me untie my dress."His eyes lit up. "Gladly."After the ceremony, C
