Skylar's POV

I had enemies, but finding a threat note in my own mailbox? That was new.

"Your time is numbered."

I stared at the small piece of paper before tossing it aside. This wasn't the first threat note I'd received. Being a public figure came with its problems, and apparently, some people had a personal problem with my existence.

Dropping my bag on the dressing table, I sat in a chair, slipping on my favorite heels.

My phone rang just as I straightened.

Mia.

I fought back a smile, smoothing the skirt of my dress. "What's popping?"

"Just checking to make sure you're still alive after all that drinking yesterday. By the way, Joan is coming over, we're heading to your aunt's house warming party together."

"After ghosting us for days. That girl needs some spanking." I shook my head glancing at the clock. I'll see you guys later at the party, Jace is heading to pick me up."

Her laughter echoed through the speaker.

"What?"

"Nothing." She chuckled. "I was just thinking... you really are the luckiest woman on earth."

"I know, right?"

"I mean it." Her voice dropped low. "A handsome fiancé, a successful career... some people really do get everything."

"Later, duh." I rolled my eyes before ending the call.

The door swung open. Jace stepped inside, his frame blocking the doorway before quietly shutting the door behind him.

"You didn't even notice someone came in. What about the security guard?" he inquired, dropping onto a couch and loosening his tie.

"They ought to be at their posts, if I'm not mistaken."

The paper was still on the floor. I moved toward it and pushed it underneath the couch. There was no point in worrying anyone over something I received all the time.

I wrapped my arms around him, taking in his familiar scent, but he stiffened and pulled my hands away.

"Not now, please," he muttered, taking his phone out of his pocket.

"Is that the reason you ignored all the texts I sent? We haven't had a proper conversation for a while, and you don't even look happy to see me."

"Lower your voice, please. I'm talking to someone." He waved a hand at me and pressed the phone closer to his ear.

"Seriously? Then what do you think about this dress?" I asked, striking a pose in the long floral dress, my eyes finding him.

He looked up from his phone and studied me for a moment. "Not that bad."

"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" I eyed him, crossing my arms.

"You should cut down on what you eat, Skylar."

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

He shrugged without tearing his eyes from his phone. "It means you've put on a little weight. Nothing serious, but the dress would fit better if you watched what you ate."

I stared at him, unsure whether I had heard him correctly. "I asked how the dress looked, and what's wrong if I gained a little weight?"

"I'm just being honest. Our wedding is coming up soon. Do you want to look like an elephant in your dress?"

I searched his face, hoping he was joking. He wasn't. The casualness of his tone irritated me more than the comment itself.

"You must be out of your mind." I ground my teeth as I faced the mirror, brushing through my hair.

"You should also adjust the back of your dress," he murmured. "Do you want the whole world staring at that scar?"

I adjusted the off-the-shoulder sleeves, pulling them into place without sparing him a glance.

He let out a sigh. "Your aunt is already blowing up my phone with messages. We need to be there on time. Hurry up, please."

I glanced back at him, watching him slip his phone into his pocket.

"I don't know why I have to drive a grown-ass woman everywhere," he mumbled under his breath.

Ignoring his words, I grabbed my bag, brushing past him.

The drive to my aunt's house was quiet. Neither of us seemed interested in starting a conversation. I kept my eyes on the passing streets, trying to shake off the unpleasant feeling his words had left me.

…..

Aunty Bianca stood with some business associates. She adjusted the scarf around her neck and laughed at something someone had whispered in her ear.

As soon as she spotted me, she closed the distance between us, pulling me into a hug before offering Jace a handshake.

"Wow, Skylar is getting robust. Is it the wedding effect or what?" A small grin formed on her lips.

"You don't know how exhausting it has been;arranging, booking, designing, and so on," I pouted.

"But you have Jace."

I turned back to Jace, whose attention was obviously elsewhere, but immediately his gaze shifted to us. He gave a tight smile.

She gave me a playful nudge. "Your cousin's already over there greeting the guests. Go on, before she charms them all without you."

"I'm too tired for that right now," I said, forcing a smile, unfazed by the pointed look she shot me.

"Skylar, you're hurt," Jace said, pointing down at my feet.

I glanced at my feet. He was right. My heels were digging into my feet, leaving red marks.

"Should I give you mine?" he asked, reaching down to take his shoes off.

Why was he acting caring all of a sudden? Was he trying to impress my aunt? I rolled my eyes, turning away from him.

"Oppressing a widow?" Aunty Bianca fanned her face, wiping away invisible tears.

"I need to borrow your lover boy for a minute. He has some work to do for me before the party commences." She pointed to the wall adjacent to us. "It's too plain. He can help me hang a painting."

Before Jace could protest, she grabbed his hand, pulling him away.

"I'll be back," he mouthed.

I nodded in understanding and walked toward a table.

My mouth watered at the sight of the food. Get a grip, Skylar.

My gaze drifted away, scanning the room. Mia and Joan were nowhere to be found.

With nothing else to do, I wandered away from the crowded living room, admiring the décor. The house was beautiful, no doubt.

I stopped in front of a painting. The young girl in it was smiling, yet there was a sadness hidden behind her smile that reminded me of someone.

Reaching for my phone in my bag, I stared at the time for a few seconds. Jace was taking too long, and it was starting to get boring with no one to talk to.

While dialing his number and using the time to check out the rooms, a phone rang somewhere nearby.

I followed the sound, heading down the hallway. It grew louder with every step I took.

That was Jace's ringtone, though. Was he actually ignoring my calls, or was I being too pushy?

I ended the call and turned away. The last thing I wanted was to look like a desperate bitch chasing after her fiancé everywhere he went.

A muffled laugh followed, and I turned toward the sound again. I knew that voice.

"Jace, don't stop," a feminine voice moaned as I stepped closer.

My stomach twisted painfully. Jace?

There had to be another Jace here. It couldn't be mine.

My legs were heavy as I forced myself to walk. If it wasn't what I was thinking, then I would simply apologize, right? I just needed to confirm something.

I stopped at the restroom door before pushing it open.

My bag slipped from my arm and hit the floor with a loud thud.

No way was this happening. I stepped back, shaking my head as I stared at the sight before me.

Skylar's POV Phone cameras flashed from every direction. I covered my face and bolted through the glass doors. My aunt's car was already pulling out of the parking lot, so I hurried over and stepped in front of it, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes. “If she doesn't get out of the way, run her down,” my aunt ordered from the backseat. I stared at her through the windshield. She might be bossy and all, but she wouldn't go as far as running me over. At least, that was what I thought. The engine roared, and the car began moving toward me. I froze, my foot refusing to move as the headlights grew closer. A hand grabbed mine and pulled me out of the way. Strong arms wrapped around me, drawing me against a familiar body. The tears I had been holding back came pouring out. I clutched his shirt and buried my face against his chest, struggling to get the words out between sobs. “Was it because I didn't win an award?” I sniffed, lifting my face to look at him. “She said something

Skylar's POV “Wait!” She gasped, reaching out to grab my necklace. “Where did you get this from? I've been trying to get my hands on this exact piece for ages.” Damien does have eyes. “It's a gift,” I replied, touching the pendant. She leaned closer, examining the necklace. “Damien must have bought it.” Her tone turned cold, laced with something bitter. “Can you give it to me?” Was she serious? “Why?” “Don't get me wrong.” She pouted, nudging my arm. “Think of it as a keepsake of our friendship. You haven't forgotten my offer, right? Let's take a picture. I'll post it on my socials so we can remember this day. Now pull it off, please.” I sighed, watching her pull out her phone, and gently pushed her hand away. “I don't like taking pictures. And I have a friend who might bite your head off if she saw you talking to me.” “Wow, I'm so jealous of you.” She flashed her ring finger, fidgeting with the heavy stone. “I don't have anyone to call a friend. • My Safest Danger    Gala Reunion

Skylar's POV Damien and I entered the ballroom together, drawing the attention of a few guests. The hall was filled with men and women dressed in expensive outfits. Soft music played in the background while waiters moved between the tables with trays of champagne. Damien's hand rested against my lower back as he guided me toward the VIP section. Several familiar faces greeted him along the way, and he returned their greetings before stopping in front of a group of men seated around a table. “That man over there is Mr. Dante's brother,” Damien whispered, pointing at a middle-aged man seated at the far end of the table. “It's quite hard to get an audience with him, but if you can get through to him, he might be able to connect you with his brother. Come on.” The man rose from his seat when he saw us and extended his hand. “It's a pleasure to meet you, Salvatore. It was nice doing business with you.” “Likewise.” Damien shook his hand and brought me forward. “This is my wife, Skylar

“They can wait.” I didn't lift my head. I kept fucking her open with my tongue until her body trembled and a soft cry tore from her as she came on my tongue, flooding my mouth. When her breathing became steady, I got up from the bed and reached for the fresh clothes I'd picked for the gala. “Get dressed. We're almost late for the gala.”She frowned, crossing her arms. “I didn't reply to your text. What does that tell you? I'm not interested.”“Why?” I asked, turning to face her.“There's a high probability that Jace might attend.” She reached for a towel and wrapped it around her chest. “I've been banned from attending as well.”Her expression made it clear that her mind was already made up. The makeup artist and designer I'd arranged for could arrive at any moment, and I had no intention of letting my preparations go to waste.“It's okay,” I replied, pulling on my trousers. “I was supposed to introduce you to Dantes the day you came to my office, but you were exhausted. I planned on

  • My Safest Danger    Gala Night I

Damien's POV The mention of Jace hadn't sat well with me ever since Marco brought it to my notice. Jace had developed a habit of appearing wherever Skylar went, and approaching Xavier was a line he shouldn't have crossed.Darkness had settled over the estate by the time my car pulled into the driveway. A few calls still needed my attention, but they could wait until after the gala. The bedroom was empty when I walked in, though the sound of running water from the bathroom told me my woman was inside. I pulled off my watch, loosened my cuffs and pushed the bathroom door open. She lay in the tub, her head resting against the edge. Her eyes opened, tracking me as I unbuttoned my shirt.“You came home late,” she murmured with a tight smile.I stripped off the rest of my clothes and settled behind her, resting my legs on either side of hers. “Come closer.”She leaned against my chest, and I rested an arm around her waist, careful not to strain my shoulder. For a while, neither of us spoke

  • My Safest Danger    Gala Invitation

Skylar's POV Xavier's eyes widened as he looked ahead. I turned to see what had caught his attention and found Damien climbing the steps toward us. Didn't he say he would be busy with work? Nevertheless, he had arrived just in time, and judging by Xavier's expression, he was overjoyed to have his father here. The photographer smiled, raising his camera. “Perfect timing. Now that everyone is here, we can take a proper family photograph.” I swallowed a lump in my throat at the word family. A few whispers broke out among the parents while others raised their phones to take pictures. “I'm here for my kid, just as every other parent is here for theirs. So, I'd appreciate being allowed to enjoy this day with him as his father without turning it into a spectacle.” His gaze shifted to the photographer. “No pictures of my family are to be shared online without my permission. I trust that won't be a prob
