Fenris

The leather bag was old. It was cracked in several places, leaking thin streams of sand onto the stone floor every time I hit it. The heavy chains groaned, a high-pitched metallic scrape that echoed in the small, windowless space. This was the belly of the mountain, a place the torches barely touched. The only sound was the rhythmic thud-thud of my knuckles hitting the hide.

I punched harder. I wanted the ache. I needed the sharp, white-hot sting in my wrists to drown out the memory of ho

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    408 Stop Lying To Me

NadiaNobody answered him. Instead Mama turned back to me, her eyes flat and certain, and reached for my arm."No." My voice cracked. "No, don't send me away. Please don't..." I looked between Mama and Father. "Mom, please wait, I..."I looked at my father. "You can't let this happen," I said. "This is your family. Say something."He didn't move toward me. His eyes dropped, and he turned slightly away, like he couldn't hold my gaze, like there was somewhere else in the room he needed to be looking instead.I stood there with my mouth open, nothing coming out. He wasn't going to stop this. He wasn't even going to try.Mama scoffed, a short, ugly sound. "He won't do anything," she said, not even looking at him, like he wasn't worth the effort of turning her head. "He knows better than to try."Father's jaw tightened. He gave her a look I'd never seen on him before, something scornful and raw at once, and then, finally, he crossed to me. His hands landed gently on my shoulders. "Baby," h

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    407 This Is Mine

Nadia"I can't do this anymore, Edran." Mama's words cut through the air, sharp as broken glass.Nobody said anything for a moment. Then Mama zipped the bag shut, picked it up off the bed, and walked past both of us, out of the bedroom. I fell into step behind her, and Father followed a beat later, close enough that I could hear his footsteps on the stairs behind mine. In the kitchen, Mama set the bag down by the door without a word and turned back to face us, Father standing near the table again like he'd never left it at all.I took a stumbling step forward, between them. My hands shook as I held them out, palms up, like I could catch the shards and make the pieces whole again. I opened my mouth to speak, but the words tangled in my throat. I tried again."Please, can we all sit down, talk about this like a family? There's no need for any of us to fight like this." My voice sounded thin and fragile, even to my own ears.Mama whirled on me. "Nadia!" Her tone was a knife's edge.I swa

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    406 Look At Your Father

NadiaFather's face was expressionless as he stared back at her, blood welling at the corner of his mouth where Mama's ring had broken the skin.Neither of them spoke for a beat too long. Then Mama turned and strode out of the kitchen, her skirts swishing around her legs."Mom," I said. Small. She didn't turn back. "I've tried," she said, her voice flat, already halfway down the hall. "And I am done trying."I followed her and found the sound of rustling fabric behind their bedroom door. Mama was already packing a bag, pulling clothes from the wardrobe without bothering to fold them."What are you..." I stopped, taking in what I was seeing. "What are you doing?"She paused, a woolen tunic halfway into the bag. Then she turned to look at me, her eyes red rimmed. "I cannot do this anymore, Nani. I have tried to hold this family together since the night we came home from that cell, and I cannot do it another day.""You can't say that," I protested. "You...""Nani," she said sharply, cutt

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    405 Same As Every Year

NadiaI stacked the last of the dinner plates and turned to the sink, water already running. Behind me I could hear Father shift in his chair."You know, if we sell the farm equipment as is, we could probably get a good price," he said. "The plow still has some life in it."Mama crossed her arms. "It's not just the equipment that's the problem. It's the fact that the crops aren't coming up. After all the work you put in."He sat back. "It's fine, a bit behind, same as every year around this time. You can't blame me for the weather." His tone was short, impatient. I turned my attention to the soap-smeared dishes, giving him space."I'm not blaming you," Mama said sharply."Sounds like you were."She sighed and walked over to pick up his empty bowl. "The neighbors' crops are growing just fine, Edran. They're not 'behind.'""Well, maybe they're not contending with the problems I am," he said, his voice rising. "You don't think I know what I'm doing?"Mama went quiet for a moment, just lo

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    404 - A Regular Day

NadiaI slipped my key into the lock and stepped inside. The hallway was dim, only the front room lights on. I hung my coat and dropped my bag by the door. Mama's voice drifted from the kitchen. "Nani, you're home. I left your dinner on the stove."I entered the kitchen to find Toby sitting at the table, shelling beans into a bowl. Mama was stirring a pot of soup and the smell filled the small room. A loaf of bread sat on the counter, cut into uneven slices. I pulled off my scarf and unwound my hair."Thanks, Mom, something smells good." I slid onto the chair beside Toby."Of course! I'd never let my favorite sister starve." He grinned at me."I'm your only sister." I rolled my eyes and snatched a bean pod from his hand."Hands off, thief." He flicked a green bean at me. "I worked hard shelling these."I laughed and tossed the bean back, catching it neatly. "They're surviving somehow."The front door creaked open. I felt my shoulders tense, but Toby just called out, "Dad's home!" as i

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    403  Half a Day's Ride

JaceFive godforsaken years. I can't believe I almost let it happen again. All that time wasted, drifting from crowded city to cramped tavern without a purpose. Avoiding the responsibility that awaited me. The only thing that finally pulled me back was the ore deposit, the one prize worth securing for good. I had a plan, a way to take Blackwater and guard that vein of precious metal. It was the only thing in my life I'd ever seen through to the bitter end. And now, here I am, dragged north on someone else's errand, leaving it all behind. Just like before.A soft crunch of boots on gravel, the hiss of a fire flaring to life. We'd reached the camp. A handful of lean-to tents scattered around a makeshift fire pit, the kind of rough camp a man on the run would stop at, nothing built to last. Temporary, thrown together in a hurry. It was hard to imagine anyone calling this place home for long, but it would do for what we needed.I needed to focus on the task at hand, on the prize waiting f

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    09 Talking To No One

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
