Fenris

I didn't respond. I focused on the wrappings, moving with slow, methodical precision. Dimitri sighed and walked around the bag, his gaze moving across the small, cramped room.

"I still can't believe you managed to keep this place hidden from Father until he died," Dimitri said, a hint of a laugh in his voice.

I glanced at the space. I’d found this pocket of the mountain when I was twelve. No windows. One entrance hidden behind a heavy tapestry in the lower halls. I had kept it secret for

Fenris"Two more days," I said, not looking at Jace."Two more days," Jace repeated, blowing on his hands. "And then your mate reminds you that you're a man and not a wolf."I rode on."Look," he said. "I know you haven't said much about what Halvard told you that last night. But I saw it in your face when you came out, and I know it changed you. What did he say?"Jace had seen Corwin's blood himself, so I would not put more on him. He did not need to hear Halvard's words by the fire. The enemy had grown stronger, and the fallen packs were only tests. In time they would come. I would not be the one to tell him. I set my jaw."He said to go home," I said curtly."Go home," Jace echoed, shaking his head."Yes,""He told you to go home." He shook his head in visible frustration. "How does that even help?"I clenched my jaw in irritation. He was asking too many questions."Does your Alpha even know where you are?" I asked, my tone sharp.Jace shrugged it off. "My Alpha doesn't need to kno

SeraVidar turned on the elders with a quiet frown, his gaze lingering longest on Thorne. "Is this how you show respect to your Luna? In her own hall, under her own roof? Speak with gratitude for her care, rather than casting slurs." He shook his head in dismay."The search stays with the Luna," Vidar continued, his easy voice unwavering. "She holds this seat while the Alpha is away, and that is how it ought to be. My own men will ride in it, and answer to her."Thorne stared at him, stung. Kael's own brother siding with the Southern girl. But Vidar only smiled at him, a smile that made no promises. Thorne sat back, beaten. I gave Vidar a small nod of thanks. But inside, I felt unsettled. I now owed him, the same as Vane did. First Vane, now me. He forgave, he backed, and every man at this table walked out in his debt. That unsettled me more than Thorne ever had.Chief Vane looked around the table, his gaze resting on each of us once, then twice, before coming to rest on Vidar. The ol

SeraA knock at the door roused me from a fitful slumber. "Luna?" The guard's voice was muffled through the thick wood.I sat up, pushing tangled hair from my eyes. "Enter."The guard stepped inside, his face haggard. "The elders gather in the council chamber. The Alpha of Ashfell called the meeting at first light."I straightened, not letting my face betray my anger. A guest had called council in my own keep, and without my consent. "Thank you. You may go."Amara had risen from her place by the hearth, where she slept every night. She moved silently to my side as I rose from the bed and pulled on my cloak. I tied it tight at my throat, then turned to face the door. The corridor was cold and dark. Amara followed a step behind, her bare feet silent on the flagstones. The council chamber was at the heart of the keep, and I was glad for the walk, to put my thoughts in order. When we reached the heavy doors, I paused to listen. Chief Thorne's gruff voice came clearly through the wood."It

RurikI spun around and she let me go. I staggered and went down in the snow with a grunt beside the water trough."Fuck you," I spat, getting up.The frozen slush soaked through my leggings and shirt. I shivered but didn't stop. I had to get back in there. I had to make Sarn pay.I tried for the hall doors. She stepped in my way without a word. Her face was as flat and quiet as ever. No emotion, no warning.I tried to shove past her shoulder. My feet flew out from under me, and once again I slammed into the snowy ground, this time on my back."Bloody hell!" I snarled, getting up, shaking the snow off my braids. The firelight from the high windows made long shadows across the yard. The laughter inside felt like claws in my head. They were celebrating a victory while Taya burned.I eyed the girl. She stood between me and those doors, silent and still as a statue. Maybe if I tried a different way. I feinted left, then darted right. She put me down with barely a twitch.I stopped, breath

SeraChief Thorne slammed his cup down and spoke loud enough to carry. "Kael's girl is ash, so where is Kael? Has anyone even looked for him?"The hall quieted, table by table. I met Thorne's glare calmly, my fingers curled around my mead horn. "Kael was not in his house when Mina found Taya this morning. No one has seen him since. His whereabouts are being seen to.""A man like Kael can not just vanish," Thorne growled, slamming his horn down on the table. "Not without a word, even to his brother." He swung his gaze to me. "And it seems strange that the Luna of this hold does not know what goes on beneath her own roof."I met his eyes, my own expression unyielding. "I would sooner have answers than guesses, Thorne. If you have any, I would hear them. But I will not be swayed by reckless speculation."Before Thorne could retort, Vidar stood, his cup raised. A few chuckles rippled through the hall at the gleam in his eye. "My brother will turn up," he said easily. "He has too many debt

SeraMina cringed and dug her fingers into my arm. "I can't watch this. It's too much," she muttered. "Taya's face out there, beaten and broken... I keep seeing her on that bloody floor."I had to make her stand fast. "Many eyes are on us today, for this," I said, as evenly as I could. "We must be seen at this pyre.""I know. It just ..." Mina shuddered, her free hand pressed to her stomach.Amara stirred at my back. I reached for her hand and felt her fingers squeeze mine. The yard was filling with faces, all turned toward the pyre. Fire would send Taya to the Moon Goddess in a few moments now."Quite the turnout," Vidar Sarn said, coming up on my right side. "My niece was well known here.""She was known," I said."Alpha." His son who happened to be his beta appeared at his shoulder. "Kael's absence...""Quiet, boy," Vidar said sharply.Gunnar fell silent, but his glare at me was venomous. I turned my face away from it.The crowd hushed as Taya was carried out. Vane walked beside th

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
