Hey everyone,

No chapter today. My head just isn't cooperating, and I'd rather give you nothing than give you something half-built that I'd end up tearing down tomorrow. I'll be back at it tomorrow.

While I'm gone, talk to me in the comments. Your feedback genuinely keeps me going, and I want to hear all of it. Where do you think this is heading? Who are you rooting for, and who are you waiting to see get exactly what's coming to them? Don't hold back on that last one, I want the names.

And tell me where you're reading from. I'm curious how far this thing has traveled.

Thank you for being patient with me. See you soon.

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    402 The Bucher’s Mate

HavardFor one bad moment, standing there, I laughed at the thought. Not because any of it was funny. Because some part of me had already done the math on how badly this could go, and laughing was the only thing keeping it from becoming a thought I'd have to sit with any longer than I could afford to. I wheeled it back. A man my age doesn't get to indulge despair, not with a war coming; my own grandchildren will have to finish if he doesn't live long enough to.So. The North will come back together, whatever it costs, and I intend to be the hand that does it. Not for the North's sake alone, though I'll tell myself that version when it's convenient. For the plainer, less flattering fact that a divided North loses the war that's already started, and I have buried enough Alphas to know I'd rather be remembered as the one who forced us back into a single fist than as one more good man who watched us stay scattered until it stopped mattering who was right. And past the North, once it's

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    401 An Old Thing

HalvardViktor had been a good Alpha in the end, whatever his last mistakes. He'd made every pack in the North stronger by being in it. It took losing him to understand that, and by the time we understood it, Vidar had gone quiet, and the whole thing was over.Everything held, more or less, until word came that Dimitri had died too, killed on the ridge south of here. The men who rode with him came back too broken to say much of anything about what they'd seen. And with no one else standing in line for it, the Butcher became Alpha because there was no one else. I do not blame the boy for any of that. He lost a father and a brother inside two years with nothing in between to prepare him for either. But losing my sympathy for his circumstance was never the same as losing my worry about what an unhandled Butcher means for the rest of us, and I had already decided, before he ever rode through my gate, that I was going to find some way to put a hand back on that weapon whether he liked it

HalvardSo. No leverage there. I will need another door, or I will need to accept there isn't one, and simply watch, and wait, the way I have watched and waited through two Alphas already and outlived them both.I have watched and waited longer than that, if I am honest with myself standing here alone. I watched and waited through Viktor too, though not the way I watch now.Viktor and I had been close once, closer than an old man likes to admit to missing. That ended the year he signed an alliance with Valdris without so much as a rider sent north to warn the rest of us it was coming. I heard of it from a trader before I heard of it from him, and I rode to Ironmaw myself to ask him what in the North's long memory he thought he was doing, tying our strongest pack to a Southern king none of us had ever had reason to trust. He didn't explain himself. He shunned me at his own table, in front of his own men, and sent me home like a boy who'd overstepped. We didn't speak again, not proper

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    399 Surprised By The Butcher

HalvardI watched him walk away toward the stables, and I let myself feel, for exactly as long as it took him to cross the yard, something close to liking him.It didn't last longer than that. It never does, with me. Sixty years of watching young Alphas ride in convinced of their own weight has taught me not to trust the feeling while it's still warm.He hadn't touched my daughter. He'd taken the account of Redhand and Thornwood like a man already braced for the wound, no theater in it, no false grief either, just a jaw that tightened and stayed tightened. He'd asked the right questions in the right order. He hadn't once tried to convince me of anything, which in my experience is the surest sign of a man who isn't lying. All of that was true. None of it changed the other thing that was also true. Every pack from here to the coast knows the name Butcher, knows the shape of what Fenris Volkov can do with his hands when he's asked to. I had known his father as a friend for longer than

FenrisHalvard found me before I found him.I hadn't left the wall since walking out of the feast. The dark had thinned to grey while I stood there, and I heard him on the stairs before I saw him, a heavier tread than mine, unhurried. He didn't speak for a long while. Just stood there next to me with his forearms on the stone, looking at the same nothing I was looking at, and I'd had enough of Northern Alphas and their silences to last me the winter."Say what you came to say.""My daughter is a beautiful woman." Halvard said it plainly, no preamble. A fact everyone already knew, stated flat. "Has her mother's face, near enough. Any man in that hall would have given an arm for half of what she offered you earlier, and my own men would have taken it without thinking twice. Yet somehow you didn't."I said nothing. There wasn't a question in it yet, and I'd learned enough of this man in two days to know not to fill his silences for him."So I find myself wondering," he said, "whether tha

FenrisThe fire pit in the center of the hall was lit again, the flames throwing shadows on the vaulted stone above. I sat at the high table, waiting for Halvard to take his seat so the rest could fill theirs.Across the hall the long tables were being loaded up with the first courses: salted meats, steaming bread, the stink of strong cheese, jugs of ale and wine. The noise was rising fast as men and women took their places. I scanned for the familiar shapes of my guards.Halvard strode up to the high table with someone on his arm, a girl of about eighteen. Her dress was cut low, and her hair was curled loose down her back. The top of the gown was a deep red silk that made her skin look pale. She was taller than Mina, maybe taller than Sera, with breasts so large they made the silk tight across the bodice, pushing up an unhidden cleavage. The look she gave me over her father's shoulder was as direct as a spear."Volkov," Halvard said. "I'd like to introduce my daughter Sigrid. I've ar

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
