I couldn't believe my ears. The alpha of silvercrest wanted me to be his mate. It felt like a dream and I pinched myself to know if this was real.
His eyes were still on me.
“Me?” I asked and pointed at myself.
“Yes.” I quickly gave him my hand and stood up next to him.
“This can't be happening.” Jenna shouted.
She stood up angrily and flipped the table. I stumbled backwards in fear as she advanced towards me.
Oswald pushed home behind him and used his body to shield me.
“Hold it, right there!” Oswald demanded.
Jenna stopped immediately. Fumes of anger was just rising from her face.
“This is unheard of.” Beta Artemis said, stepping forward.
“You are alpha and you cannot subject the rest of the pack to such doom. Your duty is to protect and carry every member of the pack along. How does marrying an omega fit into that plan?” He demanded.
“Because she's my mate.” Oswald declared.
My heart sank at those words.
Mate?
I was his mate.
How is that even possible? I was a worthless omega. Would the moon goddess play such a cruel joke and make me his mate?
“How?” I asked.
“You belong to me, I've seen it.” Oswald stated with conviction. Then he turned to his beta.
“The moon council wanted me to take a mate. I've done that. Prepare for the mating ceremony tomorrow evening.” Oswald announced.
“Alpha, you can't do that.” Artemis stared at me in disgust.
Jenna burst into tears. She buried her face in her hands and wept.
“After all I've done for you? Is this how you repay me? By choosing this worthless omega over me? Do you even know who I am? There's no one in this pack who comes close to my glory.” Jenna cried.
“That throne is mine.”
Oswald didn't validate her statements. He turned to me instead.
“I'll have the omegas take you to the palace so you can get ready for tomorrow.”
“We need to talk!” Artemis said. “The moon council has gathered and they'd like to have a word.”
Oswald gave me a nod and followed him out.
Lili quickly rushed to my side. She was staring at me in awe.
“What the hell just happened?” She asked.
I shook my head because I didn't have any explanation. Before she could say another word, Jenna stormed up to us and gave me a dirty slap on the face.
Lily gasped while I grabbed my face as pain exploded in every part of it.
“I warned you, didn't I? I'm going to make your life a living hell.” She barked. “You think you're ever going to take my place? You're not worth it.”
She immediately turned around and left. I just stared after her. Next thing, omegas surrounded me. Some were smiling while some were wearing unreadable expressions.
“We've been instructed to take you back to the palace and get you ready for the naming ceremony.” Sandra said.
I nodded and followed them out. Lily linked her arms with mine with smiles adorning her face.
“This is the best day of my life.” She whispered.
I smiled back but I still don't know how to feel.
The palace loomed ahead and I craned my neck all the way back to see it. It was the tallest building in the pack, but due to my social standing, I had never been able to enter it before. To be here, like this, now, it made my heart swell.
“I can't believe I'm standing in front of the palace.” I gushed.
“I can't believe you're going to be Luna.” Lily squealed. She was also looking at the giant palace with awe.
“And you're going to live here!”
“Oh, please. Stop dreaming.” Sandra snapped.
Lily eyed her in annoyance. She has always hated Sandra's guts and now that she was a full fledged omega, it annoyed her to see she was still looking down on us.
“You're just jealous because you're still stuck as an omega.” Lily fired.
Sandra rolled her eyes.
“Didn't you hear the alpha? He said Nyla is his mate which means he can't help his attraction to her. Why do you think the moon council took him to talk to him?” She quizzed.
“Since you seem to know so much, why don't you tell us?” Lily prompted.
“There's no way they'll let someone as useless as Nyla become Luna. Even though she's Oswald's mate. That's all. She will marry him, just like that. But I'm sure the council is telling him the benefits of having Jenna as Luna. So even though he mates with Miss Opportunist here, she will never be Luna.” She pointed at me while gloating.
“Sad, but true.” Janet said in agreement. “It would never work.”
Lily squeezed my hand in reassurance.
~~~~~~~
The day rolled by slowly, soon, they were summoning me to come to the grounds for the mating ceremony.
Butterflies swarmed in my stomach. I felt my nerves racking up as anxiety took over my body.
“You'll be fine.” Lily said, trying to calm me down.
“You're ready now.” Sandra announced.
Surprisingly, she was excited to dress me up alongside others.
They walked me down the grounds till I met with Oswald who was already waiting.
“You look stunning.” He said with a smile.
Embarrassment tainted my cheeks at his compliment. We walked together to stand in front of the priestess.
“Are you both ready for the mating?” She asked in a serious tone.
Oswald nodded.
“While at it, perform the coronation ritual as well.” Oswald ordered.
“What do you mean?” Artemis asked immediately.
He was the ring bearer, so he was standing next to Oswald.
Oswald impaled him with a look that booked no argument.
“What I mean is that I'm crowning Nyla as my Luna.”
“We will never stand for that. We talked about this.” Artemis said in a pleading voice.
“Watch me.” Oswald growled.
~Nyla~"Then we don't all go."Oswald said it to the five of us at the wall an hour after dawn, and I watched every one of them work out what it meant before he'd finished saying it."Kerrin. You take the beta home."Kerrin's head came up. "Alone?""Vann goes with you. Two of you, one prisoner, hard riding, and you're at the ford in four days." Oswald crouched and drew it in the dirt with his finger, the road and the river and the bend. "You do not take him through the gate. You hand him to Corwyn at the crossing and Corwyn holds him on Duskmoor's side of the water, under Duskmoor's roof, with a Duskmoor guard."Vann frowned. "Alpha, that's — he's our beta. You'd give him to another pack?""I'd give him to the only wolves in five kingdoms that old man hasn't been sitting with for two generations." Oswald stood. "Corwyn's held that bank eleven days and he's told me to my face his own men are sleeping badly. He'll be
~Oswald~"Nobody move."It came again. Not loud. That was the thing about it — it was a small sound, and it came from behind a slab of stone set into a hill, and it was the sound of something very large shifting its weight a long way off.Kerrin had his blade out. "Alpha—""Put that away. What are you going to do with it?"He put it away.We stood there in the grey light for a long time and it did not come again."Six hours." Artemis was still on the ground where they'd dropped him. "Six hours I had my ear against that and there was nothing. I told you. It was the quietest thing I've ever put my hands on.""And now?""And now the line's hanging." He wouldn't look at it. "You've all seen it. It's slack from top to bottom and it's slack because of me, and whatever's in there has spent four hundred years not being able to hear us.""And it can now.""I don't know, Alpha." His voice cr
~Nyla~"Tie them behind him.""Alpha, he can't work the stone with his hands behind—""In front, then, and short." Oswald had the rope himself. "Wrists to a belt. He gets two feet of reach and no more, and Vann, you keep hold of the slack and you do not let go of it if he asks you nicely.""And if he asks me not nicely?""Then it'll be easier for you."Artemis stood and let them do it. That was the part I could not get used to — he had spent four minutes on that hillside outrunning two armed wolves and now he stood with his arms out like a man being fitted for a coat."You'll want a lamp." He said. "It's dark work and it gets darker.""We've two.""Then put them both on my hands and none on my face." He looked at Oswald. "I'm serious about that. Nobody watches my face. If it comes back it'll come back there first and every one of you will be looking for it, and the moment you're looking at me yo
~Oswald~"Everything's only a knot, if you sit with it long enough.""Get behind me.""Alpha—""Behind me, Jenna. Now."She came, which surprised me, and it was the only thing that went the way I wanted it in the next four minutes.Artemis stayed sitting. That was the worst of it. He sat against that fallen wall with the rope in a loose coil in his lap and looked up at five armed wolves with the pleasant, unhurried patience of a man waiting for a cart."You've all gone very serious." He said."Beta." I kept my voice level. "Put your hands back in the rope.""Now why would I do that?""Because you asked me to. An hour ago, on that step, in front of your daughter.""Did I?" He considered it. "That doesn't sound like me. I've been cold and I've been tired and I daresay I said a great many things. You'll not hold a man to what he says with two days of stone in his back.""Vann. Kerrin
~Nyla~"Don't come any closer."Artemis said it without opening his eyes. He was sitting on the step with his back against the door and his hands loose in his lap, and he had been there long enough that the frost had got into his coat.Jenna stopped six feet short of him. I do not know how she managed it."Da.""Jenna." His eyes came open. "Ah. There you are. I've been trying not to want that.""Are you—""I'm me." He said. "Since about noon. It's been coming and going since we crossed the river and it's been going more than coming, so I'd not waste it."Oswald came up on the other side with Vann behind him."Artemis.""Alpha." His mouth moved, not quite a smile. "You'll want to know what I've done. I'll tell you the lot and I'll be quick, and then I'll ask you for something, and I'd like you to hear it all before you decide.""Go on.""I've opened it." He said.The wind came ove
~Nyla~"Don't drink that."Kerrin had the skin halfway to his mouth and stopped. "It's ours, Jenna. It came off the wall.""I know where it came from. Don't drink it here." She was already off her horse, walking a wide circle round the hollow we'd come down into. "Not in this. Get back up the slope and drink it there.""That's twenty paces.""Then it's twenty paces." Jenna's voice had gone flat. "Look at your horse."We all looked at his horse.It was standing perfectly still with its head up and its ears forward and it had not moved a muscle since we came down into that ground, and neither had any of the others, and none of them had touched the grass.We went back up the slope. Every one of us, without arguing about it, and Kerrin drank his water at the top and did not say anything for an hour afterward.* * *The old ground did not look like anything.That was the part I could not get past.
