The mating ceremony and coronation felt like a funeral. No one was happy. Everyone moved around like they had been compelled to.
“Our life starts now.” Oswald whispered when the rituals were over.
He grabbed me by the neck and pulled me closer to him so he could mark me. His thumb pressed down on my throbbing being and he smiled in satisfaction.
The minute his teeth sank into my neck, I closed my eyes expecting pain. But what I felt next was pure ecstasy. I moaned,.relishing the feeling of him sucking my blood.
A few minutes later, he came up for air. Blood was all over lips and he just lapped it up like a hungry wolf.
“Mate.” He growled.
Something inside me purred in glee. He led me down the path, back to the palace.
“Shouldn't we be celebrating?” I asked.
“Nobody is in the mood for a celebration. They all hated my decision and so they have no reason to celebrate.” He answered.
“Why?” I blurted out.
“Why what?”
“Why me? I'm not worthy. I'm not even up to your social status and you don't even know me so why did you risk everything to keep me by your side?” I asked in confusion.
“Have you heard of destiny?” Oswald asked.
I squinted my eyes wondering if it was a trick question, but his face was dead serious.
“You think this is destiny?” I whispered.
“I know it is destiny.”
He lifted his hand and found the area where he marked me. Then, he massaged gently. His movement sent tingles down my legs.
“You're mine, Nyla Moonke and I knew it from the moment I laid my eyes on you.”
I couldn't hold back the tears that began pouring from my eyes.
“All my life, I've always wanted to belong. No one in the pack wanted the runt who killed her parents. Everyone has always treated me differently.” I cried.
The heartache I carried over the tears washed over me.
“That's all in the past now, little wolf. Now, you're not just my mate, you are Luna and every one in this pack is yours to command.”
“I'm not sure I can do it.”
“As long as you put your mind to it, there's nothing you cannot do.”
His eyes seared into mine with hot intensity. He pulled me closer again and planted his mouth on my lips sealing his words with a deep passionate kiss.
I arched into him and fisted his hair wanting more.
“Alpha Oswald.” A voice suddenly interrupted, pulling us out of our little utopia.
He broke the kiss but didn't look away from me.
“What?” He asked.
His voice sounded gravelly, just like the first time when I met him.
“The omegas have prepared the feast like you requested.” One of the sentinel guards announced.
“You wanted to celebrate?” Oswald asked.
I nodded in excitement.
“Then, let's go and celebrate.”
He took my hand and led me down the dining area. I could keep myself from feeling giddy.
“Thank you.” I whispered to the moon goddess.
I could have never gotten to this position without her help.
He pulled out a chair for me and I sat down staring in awe at the platter of foods that had been placed on the table.
“When did you do all of this?” I asked.
“Yesterday. When I knew I was going to marry you and make you Luna, I gave the instructions to the kitchen omegas and I asked them to make everything ready before we come back.” He explained.
“There's so much food.”
Oswald looked down shyly and shrugged as if he was unsure of himself.
“I didn't know what you liked so I kind of asked to prepare everything so I could watch you eat and pick out your preferences.”
My heart swelled at the thought.
“Thank you, Alpha.”
“I'm your husband now, no need for formalities.” He chided.
I gave him a watery laugh before digging into the food. True to his words, he just watched me while I savored and relished the different flavors of the different meals the omegas have prepared.
“Do you like them?” He asked.
I nodded because my mouth was filled with food.
An omega stumbled in carrying a jug of wine. She bowed in greeting before dropping it on the table.
“Freshly brewed from the winery.” She said.
“Thank you, Maya. Your new Luna loves the food.”
Maya turned to me and smiled but there was no warmth in her eyes. Just an emptiness that chilled me to my bones.
“I'm glad you like it.”
I looked at Oswald to see if he could see the same thing I was seeing, but he was oblivious. He just poured out some wine into his cup.
Maya bowed again and left.
“She doesn't seem to like me.” I stated.
“Who? Maya?” Oswald laughed. “She's loyal to Jenna. Everyone thought she would be my queen and so I don't think she's happy with this new decision, but I'm sure she'll get over it soon. Maya is really nice.”
I nodded in understanding.
He raised his wine cup to me in a toast.
“To a beautiful life.” He prayed.
“To a beautiful life.” I said in return.
He drank the wine while I watched.
“That's the best I've tasted in a while.” He said proudly and began pouring another one.
“Can I have some?” I asked.
“Of cour-” he didn't finish his statement then he began coughing.
He grabbed his throat as if he was in pain and coughed violently. I watched as the colour drained from his face while he coughed.
Something was wrong. He stood up abruptly while still clutching his throat. I stood up too and ran to his side.
“Oswald, what's wrong?” I asked in panic. “Guards!” I shouted.
Oswald stumbled and fell and I rushed to catch him. He fell into my arms and we both tumbled to the ground.
“Po…ison.” He choked out and ceased breathing.
My eyes widened in horror.
“Oswald!” I called in alarm.
He didn't answer. He was dead.
~Nyla~"Then we don't all go."Oswald said it to the five of us at the wall an hour after dawn, and I watched every one of them work out what it meant before he'd finished saying it."Kerrin. You take the beta home."Kerrin's head came up. "Alone?""Vann goes with you. Two of you, one prisoner, hard riding, and you're at the ford in four days." Oswald crouched and drew it in the dirt with his finger, the road and the river and the bend. "You do not take him through the gate. You hand him to Corwyn at the crossing and Corwyn holds him on Duskmoor's side of the water, under Duskmoor's roof, with a Duskmoor guard."Vann frowned. "Alpha, that's — he's our beta. You'd give him to another pack?""I'd give him to the only wolves in five kingdoms that old man hasn't been sitting with for two generations." Oswald stood. "Corwyn's held that bank eleven days and he's told me to my face his own men are sleeping badly. He'll be
~Oswald~"Nobody move."It came again. Not loud. That was the thing about it — it was a small sound, and it came from behind a slab of stone set into a hill, and it was the sound of something very large shifting its weight a long way off.Kerrin had his blade out. "Alpha—""Put that away. What are you going to do with it?"He put it away.We stood there in the grey light for a long time and it did not come again."Six hours." Artemis was still on the ground where they'd dropped him. "Six hours I had my ear against that and there was nothing. I told you. It was the quietest thing I've ever put my hands on.""And now?""And now the line's hanging." He wouldn't look at it. "You've all seen it. It's slack from top to bottom and it's slack because of me, and whatever's in there has spent four hundred years not being able to hear us.""And it can now.""I don't know, Alpha." His voice cr
~Nyla~"Tie them behind him.""Alpha, he can't work the stone with his hands behind—""In front, then, and short." Oswald had the rope himself. "Wrists to a belt. He gets two feet of reach and no more, and Vann, you keep hold of the slack and you do not let go of it if he asks you nicely.""And if he asks me not nicely?""Then it'll be easier for you."Artemis stood and let them do it. That was the part I could not get used to — he had spent four minutes on that hillside outrunning two armed wolves and now he stood with his arms out like a man being fitted for a coat."You'll want a lamp." He said. "It's dark work and it gets darker.""We've two.""Then put them both on my hands and none on my face." He looked at Oswald. "I'm serious about that. Nobody watches my face. If it comes back it'll come back there first and every one of you will be looking for it, and the moment you're looking at me yo
~Oswald~"Everything's only a knot, if you sit with it long enough.""Get behind me.""Alpha—""Behind me, Jenna. Now."She came, which surprised me, and it was the only thing that went the way I wanted it in the next four minutes.Artemis stayed sitting. That was the worst of it. He sat against that fallen wall with the rope in a loose coil in his lap and looked up at five armed wolves with the pleasant, unhurried patience of a man waiting for a cart."You've all gone very serious." He said."Beta." I kept my voice level. "Put your hands back in the rope.""Now why would I do that?""Because you asked me to. An hour ago, on that step, in front of your daughter.""Did I?" He considered it. "That doesn't sound like me. I've been cold and I've been tired and I daresay I said a great many things. You'll not hold a man to what he says with two days of stone in his back.""Vann. Kerrin
~Nyla~"Don't come any closer."Artemis said it without opening his eyes. He was sitting on the step with his back against the door and his hands loose in his lap, and he had been there long enough that the frost had got into his coat.Jenna stopped six feet short of him. I do not know how she managed it."Da.""Jenna." His eyes came open. "Ah. There you are. I've been trying not to want that.""Are you—""I'm me." He said. "Since about noon. It's been coming and going since we crossed the river and it's been going more than coming, so I'd not waste it."Oswald came up on the other side with Vann behind him."Artemis.""Alpha." His mouth moved, not quite a smile. "You'll want to know what I've done. I'll tell you the lot and I'll be quick, and then I'll ask you for something, and I'd like you to hear it all before you decide.""Go on.""I've opened it." He said. The wind came ove
~Nyla~"Don't drink that."Kerrin had the skin halfway to his mouth and stopped. "It's ours, Jenna. It came off the wall.""I know where it came from. Don't drink it here." She was already off her horse, walking a wide circle round the hollow we'd come down into. "Not in this. Get back up the slope and drink it there.""That's twenty paces.""Then it's twenty paces." Jenna's voice had gone flat. "Look at your horse."We all looked at his horse. It was standing perfectly still with its head up and its ears forward and it had not moved a muscle since we came down into that ground, and neither had any of the others, and none of them had touched the grass. We went back up the slope. Every one of us, without arguing about it, and Kerrin drank his water at the top and did not say anything for an hour afterward.* * *The old ground did not look like anything. That was the part I could not get past.
