~Nyla~

“You can rise.” He said in that gravelly voice.

I stood on shaky legs and looked up into his face. My heart slammed into my chest the minute our eyes met. Something inside me yearned to reach out to him and I had to visibly restrain myself from doing that.

He was looking at me with so much intensity as if he could feel what I was feeling.

“Tha…thank you.” I stammered.

He gave a single nod. His face was blank, no expressions.

“Carry on.” He told the priestess.

I turned to the altar once more and the priestess began her rituals. She handed us a clay bowl with cold water and we all sipped from it before she took it back.

“You are now full and you are now fledged. Become!” She ordered.

We all looked up into the sky and howled. Some transformed into powerful wolves showing they were no longer omegas.

Sandra, Lily and Janet transformed into smaller brown wolves. I could see the disappointment on Sandra's face.

Meanwhile, I couldn't transform. I was still stuck in my human body. Alpha Oswald raised an eyebrow as if he was expecting me to transform.

I looked away in shame.

Jenna sidled up to him and chuckled awkwardly.

“I told you this was a bad idea. I know you don't spend too much time in the pack, but that's why you have me. I'm always ready to bring you up to date.”

Oswald didn't spare her a glance, he kept his eyes on me but Jenna continued talking.

“You may not really know who she is. Her name is Nyla Moonke and she's a runt. She killed her parents at a very young age and her curse was so ugly that no family would adopt her, now she can't even transform. You shouldn't taint yourself with her dirt.” Jenna finished.

“You don't have a wolf?” Alpha Oswald asked.

I shook my head.

“Come.” He offered his hand to me.

I was taken aback by the gesture. My gaze fell on Jenna and I saw she was staring daggers at me. If looks could kill, then I would have dropped dead already.

My hands trembled as I raised them and put in Oswald's. He gave me a reassuring smile before leading me down the path to sit next to him.

“I can't sit here.” I said nervously.

He didn't reply. He just pulled out the chair for me and I sat. Then, he took his own seat at the head of the table.

The shock of what he did was evident on everyone's faces but they quickly masked it and carried on with the festivities.

Jenna sat next to me. She grabbed my hand and squeezed painfully.

I winced but I didn't make it too obvious.

“I've heard from people who know you, that you bring bad luck. So whatever spell you are casting right now, whatever you think you're doing, I'll advise you to stop because I will destroy you. Oswald is mine.” She growled in my ear.

“I'm not doing anything.” I said in fear.

Because I believed her. Jenna was a powerful dominant wolf while I was just a runt who didn't even have a wolf. She could destroy me in the blink of an eye.

“Please.” I pleaded.

She dug her nails into my flesh, drawing blood. I tried to remove my hand but I only caused her nails to dig deeper.

“This is just a warning.” She reminded me and quickly let go.

“Are you alright?” Oswald asked next to me.

I nodded my head. As if he knew I was lying, his eyes slid to my wrist and I quickly tried to cover it.

“What's that?” He demanded.

Jenna gave me a look that dared me to out her.

“I just got hurt while working earlier today. It's nothing serious.” I lied.

Oswald didn't say anything but I could tell that he knew I was lying.

Soon, the moon council gathered next to him and began whispering. I couldn't hear what they were saying but it sounded like they were reminding him of his promise to take a mate before the next moon dance.

Oswald sighed as if it was a chore.

“We have eligible young maidens who are gathered here tonight. You can look around and make your choice.” Beta Artemis said.

Oswald rubbed his finger across his lips as if contemplating what to do next.

Then he stood up and everyone quieted down.

“My council tells me that it's time to choose a mate and crown a Luna who will help in governing pack duties.” Oswald began.

Everyone laughed at his joke, except Jenna. She shifted uncomfortably next to me.

“We're all gathered today and we've witnessed the beautiful additions to our numbers and I thought what better time to choose my mate than now, in front of everyone?” He raised his wine cup proudly.

The drummers rolled the drums in excitement and everyone seemed hyped with the announcement. The dancers gallivanted, ready to begin the ceremonial dance once the announcement was made.

“I know we all have our theories and we all have our ideas about how the selection is supposed to go, and I can tell you that your guesses are correct.”

Jenna immediately looked up happily. She had been waiting for this moment. Everyone had been waiting. She had been groomed from the start to become Luna.

Her father, Beta Artemis, gave her a proud nod. She began righting her dress, knowing she would be called up any minute to stand next to the alpha as his mate.

“Nyla Moonke.” Oswald called.

His words took everyone by surprise. Jenna's eyes widened next to me and I could hear them popping as if they were about to fall. I was shocked too.

Did he just say my name?

Oswald turned to me and offered me his hand.

“I would be honored to take you as my mate.” He deadpanned.

Silence ensued.

~Nyla~"Then we don't all go."Oswald said it to the five of us at the wall an hour after dawn, and I watched every one of them work out what it meant before he'd finished saying it."Kerrin. You take the beta home."Kerrin's head came up. "Alone?""Vann goes with you. Two of you, one prisoner, hard riding, and you're at the ford in four days." Oswald crouched and drew it in the dirt with his finger, the road and the river and the bend. "You do not take him through the gate. You hand him to Corwyn at the crossing and Corwyn holds him on Duskmoor's side of the water, under Duskmoor's roof, with a Duskmoor guard."Vann frowned. "Alpha, that's — he's our beta. You'd give him to another pack?""I'd give him to the only wolves in five kingdoms that old man hasn't been sitting with for two generations." Oswald stood. "Corwyn's held that bank eleven days and he's told me to my face his own men are sleeping badly. He'll be

~Oswald~"Nobody move."It came again. Not loud. That was the thing about it — it was a small sound, and it came from behind a slab of stone set into a hill, and it was the sound of something very large shifting its weight a long way off.Kerrin had his blade out. "Alpha—""Put that away. What are you going to do with it?"He put it away.We stood there in the grey light for a long time and it did not come again."Six hours." Artemis was still on the ground where they'd dropped him. "Six hours I had my ear against that and there was nothing. I told you. It was the quietest thing I've ever put my hands on.""And now?""And now the line's hanging." He wouldn't look at it. "You've all seen it. It's slack from top to bottom and it's slack because of me, and whatever's in there has spent four hundred years not being able to hear us.""And it can now.""I don't know, Alpha." His voice cr

~Nyla~"Tie them behind him.""Alpha, he can't work the stone with his hands behind—""In front, then, and short." Oswald had the rope himself. "Wrists to a belt. He gets two feet of reach and no more, and Vann, you keep hold of the slack and you do not let go of it if he asks you nicely.""And if he asks me not nicely?""Then it'll be easier for you."Artemis stood and let them do it. That was the part I could not get used to — he had spent four minutes on that hillside outrunning two armed wolves and now he stood with his arms out like a man being fitted for a coat."You'll want a lamp." He said. "It's dark work and it gets darker.""We've two.""Then put them both on my hands and none on my face." He looked at Oswald. "I'm serious about that. Nobody watches my face. If it comes back it'll come back there first and every one of you will be looking for it, and the moment you're looking at me yo

~Oswald~"Everything's only a knot, if you sit with it long enough.""Get behind me.""Alpha—""Behind me, Jenna. Now."She came, which surprised me, and it was the only thing that went the way I wanted it in the next four minutes.Artemis stayed sitting. That was the worst of it. He sat against that fallen wall with the rope in a loose coil in his lap and looked up at five armed wolves with the pleasant, unhurried patience of a man waiting for a cart."You've all gone very serious." He said."Beta." I kept my voice level. "Put your hands back in the rope.""Now why would I do that?""Because you asked me to. An hour ago, on that step, in front of your daughter.""Did I?" He considered it. "That doesn't sound like me. I've been cold and I've been tired and I daresay I said a great many things. You'll not hold a man to what he says with two days of stone in his back.""Vann. Kerrin

~Nyla~"Don't come any closer."Artemis said it without opening his eyes. He was sitting on the step with his back against the door and his hands loose in his lap, and he had been there long enough that the frost had got into his coat.Jenna stopped six feet short of him. I do not know how she managed it."Da.""Jenna." His eyes came open. "Ah. There you are. I've been trying not to want that.""Are you—""I'm me." He said. "Since about noon. It's been coming and going since we crossed the river and it's been going more than coming, so I'd not waste it."Oswald came up on the other side with Vann behind him."Artemis.""Alpha." His mouth moved, not quite a smile. "You'll want to know what I've done. I'll tell you the lot and I'll be quick, and then I'll ask you for something, and I'd like you to hear it all before you decide.""Go on.""I've opened it." He said. The wind came ove

~Nyla~"Don't drink that."Kerrin had the skin halfway to his mouth and stopped. "It's ours, Jenna. It came off the wall.""I know where it came from. Don't drink it here." She was already off her horse, walking a wide circle round the hollow we'd come down into. "Not in this. Get back up the slope and drink it there.""That's twenty paces.""Then it's twenty paces." Jenna's voice had gone flat. "Look at your horse."We all looked at his horse. It was standing perfectly still with its head up and its ears forward and it had not moved a muscle since we came down into that ground, and neither had any of the others, and none of them had touched the grass. We went back up the slope. Every one of us, without arguing about it, and Kerrin drank his water at the top and did not say anything for an hour afterward.* * *The old ground did not look like anything. That was the part I could not get past.
