Chapter 1

Author: Never Spring
On Christmas Day, when families everywhere were gathered together, I, Sophie Jackson, died.

During the day, I had worked twelve straight hours unloading packages just to meet a deadline. I hadn't even had time to take a sip of water.

When I got home, I was made to kneel for another two hours simply because my sister, Rosie Jackson, said the fish I'd cooked was too salty.

When death came for me, I thought, 'I can't die yet. I haven't finished atoning for my sins.'

In the final second before my consciousness faded, I surprisingly felt no fear.

I didn't know how much time had passed before I felt my body floating in the air.

I looked down and saw myself.

My corpse was so frail it looked like a skeleton. My eyes were sunken, my cheekbones protruded, and my face had turned a ghastly gray.

'I look awful,' I thought bitterly to myself.

Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared before me.

The bone-chilling cold vanished.

Instead, I was hit by the rich aroma of butter.

I opened my eyes in confusion.

I found myself standing inside the most expensive restaurant in the city center.

My parents and Rosie were sitting around a huge round table in a private dining room.

There was lobster, premium beef, and other delicacies on the table.

"Rosie, here. Try this lobster. It's so tender."

My mother, Sylvia Leroy, picked up a piece of lobster and carefully blew on it before bringing it close to Rosie's mouth.

Mom's gaze was very gentle, and she had a loving smile I'd never seen directed at me.

Rosie took a small bite. She then frowned and complained, "Mom, it's a little bland. I want some of the sauce."

"Okay, okay. I'll give you some with the sauce, but you can't have too much. It's too spicy for you."

Mom wasn't annoyed in the slightest. She dipped another piece of lobster in the hot sauce.

My father, Jonah Jackson, sat beside them with a flushed, cheerful face. He raised his glass and took a sip of whiskey before sighing contentedly.

"This is more like it. It's Christmas Day. We're supposed to enjoy a nice meal together as a family!"

I floated in midair and watched this happy scene unfold before me. I felt nothing but sorrow.

"Dad, Mom–" Rosie swallowed the food in her mouth and put down her fork. "We came out for such a nice meal and left Sophie home alone. Isn't that a little wrong? It's Christmas Day, and she hasn't eaten anything–"

The moment she mentioned my name, the lively atmosphere in the room disappeared.

The smile on Mom's face faded. She then slammed her hand onto the table. "Why bring up that jinx on Christmas Day? That fortune teller was absolutely right. Ever since she was born, nothing but bad things have happened to this family."

Her tone was full of disgust. It was as if just mentioning me left a bad taste in her mouth.

I vaguely recalled that when I was little, a strangely dressed person had once passed by our house and pointed at my sister and me. They said something about how fortune and misfortune balanced each other out.

I'd never realized that my parents had actually taken that statement seriously and regarded me as a jinx all these years.

I felt bitter on the inside, and tears slipped down my cheeks.

Dad snorted too. He picked up a piece of beef and put it into his mouth. "Your mom is right. Rosie, you're just too kind. That brat is downright evil. If we don't teach her a lesson, she'll never do what she's told!"

The next second, I watched Rosie get out of her wheelchair and walk normally to Mom's side before whining sweetly, "But I'm tired of pretending to be disabled after all these years."

From that day on, Rosie became the family's servant.Mom and Dad no longer spoiled her or gave her a single penny.Every morning at five, she had to get up to clean the house, do the laundry, and cook. The slightest mistake earned her a beating and a torrent of abuse."The floor isn't clean! Are you trying to slack off?"The food tastes awful! Are you trying to starve us?"Those were the exact words they'd once used to berate me.Now, they were thrown right back at Rosie.Late at night, Mom and Dad would force her to kneel in front of my portrait and repent."Say it! How did you kill your sister?"Say it! Tell us how cruel you are!"Rosie kneeled on the cold floor while recounting her crimes. Her voice went from trembling, to numb, and finally to hysterical.I floated in midair and watched Rosie, who had once thought she was better than everyone else, crawl on the floor and beg for scraps.I laughed bitterly. 'What goes around comes around.'She was the one who had to ato

It was a family portrait. It was the only photo of the four of us together from twenty years ago.In the photo, I was smiling widely while holding Rosie's hand. My eyes were filled with hope for the future. That photo had once been torn to pieces by Mom in a fit of anger. It was because I'd accidentally knocked over Rosie's medicine.I couldn't bear to throw it away.I picked up every single piece, carefully taped them back together with clear tape, and hid it in this tin box. I held it dear and close.Mom picked up the photo with trembling hands and turned it over. There was a crooked line of childish handwriting on the back. It was written with a pencil. The words had already faded somewhat.[I wish the kidnappers had taken me that day. Rosie wouldn't have been in pain, and Mom and Dad wouldn't have been sad. I'm a bad girl. I deserve to die.]That one line completely broke Mom's heart. "S-Sophie. My Sophie–"She clutched the photo tightly against her chest and let out a h

Rosie's face instantly turned pale. She had never imagined that the secret she'd hidden all these years would be exposed."I-I have no idea what you're talking about–""No idea?" Mom stepped forward and slapped her hard across the face. "That fortune teller has already been arrested! He confessed to everything!"Rosie! How could you be so heartless? She's your sister!"You got her killed just because you wanted all our love to yourself and didn't want to do any work!"Mom sobbed hysterically. Thinking about everything they'd done to me over the past twenty years, she wanted nothing more than to kill the monster standing before her."I-I didn't mean to–"Rosie covered her face. Tears instantly streamed down her cheeks. "I-I was scared that you wouldn't love me anymore–""Enough!" Dad roared. "From today on, you're no longer part of the Jackson family! We won't pay a single cent of your medical bills anymore! Whatever happens to you has nothing to do with us!"After Rosie was t

After the old man was identified, he glanced at my parents and suddenly snorted. "Well, well. Isn't this the gullible rich guy I met?""The gullible rich guy?" Dad froze."Of course." The old man sneered. "Back then, I was only passing by your house. I only wanted to con you out of a meal."But your older daughter secretly slipped me five hundred bucks after hearing that I could make her parents love only her."I figured I'd be stupid not to take the money, so I casually told you that her little sister was a jinx and she was the lucky one."I never expected you to actually believe me! Hahaha! Your family was the easiest I've ever conned!"Thump.Dad nearly lost his balance. Mom pointed at the fortune teller, but for a long time, she couldn't get a single word out. "Y-You!"'Five hundred bucks.' I suddenly remembered. That year, five hundred bucks really had gone missing from our house. It had been Dad's freshly issued bonus.Back then, Mom and Dad had searched everywhere and

When they returned home, police tape had already been stretched across the entrance downstairs. The neighbors stood gathered in the hallway, pointing and whispering, while their eyes filled with disgust and contempt."That's the family. They abused their daughter and didn't even find out she was dead until she started decomposing.""What a tragedy. That girl was always so well-behaved. How did she end up with parents like that?"Mom and Dad lowered their heads and slipped through the police tape while trying to look invisible. The stench inside the apartment was even stronger than before. It carried an oppressive feeling that was almost suffocating. The forensic pathologist was packing up his equipment. My corpse was next to him. It was already sealed inside a body bag. When the young forensic pathologist saw Mom and Dad enter, he removed his mask."Are you her family members?"The deceased, Sophie, had multiple old injuries across her body, severe malnutrition, and almost no

They were gone for another three days.During those three days, they fussed over Rosie at the hospital and had her undergo every examination imaginable.Meanwhile, my corpse continued to decompose inside that sealed room.Three days later, the stench had spread through the ventilation system and permeated the entire building. The neighbors could no longer stand it and called the police. When the police broke down the door, several young auxiliary officers threw up on the spot.Even the forensic pathologist, who was wearing a gas mask, couldn't help but stare at the horrific state of the scene with his eyes wide open."This is terrible. She'd been dead for at least eight days, and her body had also suffered injuries inflicted after death."When the police called Dad, he was peeling an apple for Rosie in the hospital."Hello? Who is this?""This is a call from South City Police Station. Are you Sophie's father? You need to return home immediately."Dad frowned impatiently. "Of
