Chapter 2

Author: Never Spring
Watching this scene unfold, my spirit trembled uncontrollably. Had Rosie's disability been fake? Then why had I spent all these years atoning for it?

Mom quickly comforted Rosie. "Honey, if you hadn't pretended to be disabled, she wouldn't have willingly served you. The fortune teller said that only by making the jinx suffer and having her serve you, the lucky one, would our family continue to prosper."

Dad chimed in as well. "Exactly. After all, the three of us worked together to deceive her back then. You can't let the truth slip now."

So even the kidnapping that had haunted me for my entire life had been a scheme the three of them planned together.

I floated in midair, and my eyes were wide with fury.

"Come on, Rosie. Forget about that buzzkill."

Dad poured another glass of juice for Rosie and raised it with a smile. "Here's to Christmas Day! I wish you good health and happiness every day! As long as you're here, our family will always be complete!"

"Thank you, Dad. Thank you, Mom!" Rosie smiled sweetly and clinked her glass against theirs.

Floating in midair, my spirit felt like it was being torn apart over and over again.

The three of them had deceived me for twenty whole years!

For twenty years, I'd kneeled on the floor every day to massage her legs. Sometimes, it was for an entire hour at a time. Even the joints in my fingers became deformed.

I carried her up and down the stairs. Even after developing a herniated disc and suffering so much pain that I could barely stand upright, I never once dared to let her feet touch the ground.

To pay for her treatment, I gave up my chance to attend college, went to construction sites to haul bricks, and washed dishes at restaurants.

In the end, I'd spent my entire life trapped in a lie.

I could only watch as the three of them finished their family reunion dinner.

Later, Dad called the waiter over to pay the bill. "Sir, your total is 328 bucks."

The waiter handed him the bill.

Dad casually retrieved his wallet and prepared to pay with his credit card.

Right then, Rosie, who hadn't said a word until then, spoke up. "Didn't Rosie receive her paycheck for the month already?"

She blinked and spoke in such a matter-of-fact tone that it chilled me to the bone.

Hearing that, Dad smiled. "Thanks for reminding me!"

He immediately typed rapidly.

[Hey, brat. Transfer 500 bucks over right now! Your sister needs to pay for her medicine!]

The message was sent successfully.

I had always replied to his messages within seconds, but for the first time, there was no response.

Dad stared at his phone screen. His expression grew darker by the second. The veins on his forehead began to bulge.

"How dare she? Does she actually have the nerve to ignore my message?"

He slammed his hand against the table, making the dishes and fork rattle.

"She always sends money the moment we ask for it. What's wrong with her today? Is she deliberately trying to defy us?" he added.

Mom fanned the flames next to him. "We've spoiled her rotten! Just wait until we get home. I'll teach her a lesson she'll never forget!"

Rosie sat beside them with a pitiful expression. She spoke in a choked voice. "Dad, Mom, don't get worked up. Rosie must still be upset with me."

"She wouldn't dare!" Dad roared. His eyes turned bloodshot. "We brought her to this world! She should serve you for the rest of her life!

"As long as I'm alive, she'll be your slave for the rest of her life! Come on! Let's go home!"

Dad stood up furiously and reluctantly paid for the meal with his credit card.

"I'd like to see if that brat really has gotten bold enough to defy me!"

I watched them storm out furiously.

Floating in midair, I felt a grief I'd never experienced before.

'Dad. Mom. I won't make you upset anymore. I'm dead. Your jinx is gone. Are you satisfied now?'

From that day on, Rosie became the family's servant.Mom and Dad no longer spoiled her or gave her a single penny.Every morning at five, she had to get up to clean the house, do the laundry, and cook. The slightest mistake earned her a beating and a torrent of abuse."The floor isn't clean! Are you trying to slack off?"The food tastes awful! Are you trying to starve us?"Those were the exact words they'd once used to berate me.Now, they were thrown right back at Rosie.Late at night, Mom and Dad would force her to kneel in front of my portrait and repent."Say it! How did you kill your sister?"Say it! Tell us how cruel you are!"Rosie kneeled on the cold floor while recounting her crimes. Her voice went from trembling, to numb, and finally to hysterical.I floated in midair and watched Rosie, who had once thought she was better than everyone else, crawl on the floor and beg for scraps.I laughed bitterly. 'What goes around comes around.'She was the one who had to ato

It was a family portrait. It was the only photo of the four of us together from twenty years ago.In the photo, I was smiling widely while holding Rosie's hand. My eyes were filled with hope for the future. That photo had once been torn to pieces by Mom in a fit of anger. It was because I'd accidentally knocked over Rosie's medicine.I couldn't bear to throw it away.I picked up every single piece, carefully taped them back together with clear tape, and hid it in this tin box. I held it dear and close.Mom picked up the photo with trembling hands and turned it over. There was a crooked line of childish handwriting on the back. It was written with a pencil. The words had already faded somewhat.[I wish the kidnappers had taken me that day. Rosie wouldn't have been in pain, and Mom and Dad wouldn't have been sad. I'm a bad girl. I deserve to die.]That one line completely broke Mom's heart. "S-Sophie. My Sophie–"She clutched the photo tightly against her chest and let out a h

Rosie's face instantly turned pale. She had never imagined that the secret she'd hidden all these years would be exposed."I-I have no idea what you're talking about–""No idea?" Mom stepped forward and slapped her hard across the face. "That fortune teller has already been arrested! He confessed to everything!"Rosie! How could you be so heartless? She's your sister!"You got her killed just because you wanted all our love to yourself and didn't want to do any work!"Mom sobbed hysterically. Thinking about everything they'd done to me over the past twenty years, she wanted nothing more than to kill the monster standing before her."I-I didn't mean to–"Rosie covered her face. Tears instantly streamed down her cheeks. "I-I was scared that you wouldn't love me anymore–""Enough!" Dad roared. "From today on, you're no longer part of the Jackson family! We won't pay a single cent of your medical bills anymore! Whatever happens to you has nothing to do with us!"After Rosie was t

After the old man was identified, he glanced at my parents and suddenly snorted. "Well, well. Isn't this the gullible rich guy I met?""The gullible rich guy?" Dad froze."Of course." The old man sneered. "Back then, I was only passing by your house. I only wanted to con you out of a meal."But your older daughter secretly slipped me five hundred bucks after hearing that I could make her parents love only her."I figured I'd be stupid not to take the money, so I casually told you that her little sister was a jinx and she was the lucky one."I never expected you to actually believe me! Hahaha! Your family was the easiest I've ever conned!"Thump.Dad nearly lost his balance. Mom pointed at the fortune teller, but for a long time, she couldn't get a single word out. "Y-You!"'Five hundred bucks.' I suddenly remembered. That year, five hundred bucks really had gone missing from our house. It had been Dad's freshly issued bonus.Back then, Mom and Dad had searched everywhere and

When they returned home, police tape had already been stretched across the entrance downstairs. The neighbors stood gathered in the hallway, pointing and whispering, while their eyes filled with disgust and contempt."That's the family. They abused their daughter and didn't even find out she was dead until she started decomposing.""What a tragedy. That girl was always so well-behaved. How did she end up with parents like that?"Mom and Dad lowered their heads and slipped through the police tape while trying to look invisible. The stench inside the apartment was even stronger than before. It carried an oppressive feeling that was almost suffocating. The forensic pathologist was packing up his equipment. My corpse was next to him. It was already sealed inside a body bag. When the young forensic pathologist saw Mom and Dad enter, he removed his mask."Are you her family members?"The deceased, Sophie, had multiple old injuries across her body, severe malnutrition, and almost no

They were gone for another three days.During those three days, they fussed over Rosie at the hospital and had her undergo every examination imaginable.Meanwhile, my corpse continued to decompose inside that sealed room.Three days later, the stench had spread through the ventilation system and permeated the entire building. The neighbors could no longer stand it and called the police. When the police broke down the door, several young auxiliary officers threw up on the spot.Even the forensic pathologist, who was wearing a gas mask, couldn't help but stare at the horrific state of the scene with his eyes wide open."This is terrible. She'd been dead for at least eight days, and her body had also suffered injuries inflicted after death."When the police called Dad, he was peeling an apple for Rosie in the hospital."Hello? Who is this?""This is a call from South City Police Station. Are you Sophie's father? You need to return home immediately."Dad frowned impatiently. "Of
