Chapter 3

Author: Never Spring
Their car sped down the road and soon entered our old, run-down neighborhood.

With the sound of screeching brakes, it stopped downstairs.

Before the car had even come to a complete stop, Dad unbuckled his seat belt, shoved the door open, and stormed out.

He was practically radiating fury after not being able to reach me. Gripping his phone tightly as if he were holding a knife, he yelled, "Sophie! Get out here right now!"

He started shouting before he had even reached the stairs. His voice made the motion-sensor lights flicker.

Mom pushed Rosie along behind him while cursing loudly as well. "You little brat! Have you got a death wish?"

They took the stairs two at a time and charged up to the third floor.

Thud!

The first thing Dad did after walking through the door was switch the living room light on. "Sophie! I said get out here!"

He stormed over to the storage room, lifted his foot, and kicked the door hard.

Bang!

The thin wooden door shook violently and sent dust raining down.

"Playing dead, huh? You won't even open the door? Are you trying to rebel against me?"

Bang!

He kicked it several more times.

Mom also pounded hard on the door. Her palms turned red as she screamed, "Sophie! Are you deaf? Didn't you hear your father calling you?

"Get out here and apologize to your sister! Transfer the money over! Otherwise, don't even think about staying in this house tonight!

"What was the point of raising you? You always let us down when it matters! You really are a jinx!"

Rosie sat in her wheelchair and shrank back slightly. "Dad, Mom, is Sophie still angry? She usually doesn't talk much, but she wouldn't ignore us like this–"

"Angry? What right does Sophie have to be angry?" Dad roared while he trembled with fury. "She's the one who owes this family! As long as you're still disabled, even if she dies, she has to crawl out of her grave and take care of you!

"Sophie! I'm counting to three! If you don't open this door, I'll tear it down myself! One! Two! Three!"

After he finished counting, the room remained completely silent.

Dad lowered his foot and stood there panting. His expression shifted between anger and uncertainty.

Mom snorted. "Looks like she's really determined to fight us to the end! Trying to play games with us? I refuse to believe I can't deal with her!"

Dad rummaged through the cabinet by the entrance. He was growing increasingly irritated. Finally, he angrily hurled the things in his hands onto the floor. "Damn it! I can't find the spare key!"

He turned around and glared viciously at the closed door. His spittle flew everywhere as he shouted, "Fine! You won't open the door, will you? You want to go on a hunger strike to protest, is that it?

"Fine! I'll give you what you want!"

Right then, Rosie tugged at Mom's sleeve and said timidly, "Mom, if Sophie doesn't want to see us, there's no point in standing outside her door.

"Anyway, my friend happened to give me a few coupons to a hot spring resort. Why don't we go there and relax? Let Rosie cool off for a few days. Once she gets hungry, she'll come out on her own."

Mom's eyes lit up at once. She then glanced at the storage room with a look of disgust. "Rosie, you really are the more sensible one. Fine! Let's go! Let that ungrateful brat starve!"

"Let's leave now! Cut the power. I want to see how long she can keep up this act!" Dad yelled before immediately flipping the main breaker. The apartment instantly plunged into darkness.

Just like that, the three of them left while cursing and complaining.

From that day on, Rosie became the family's servant.Mom and Dad no longer spoiled her or gave her a single penny.Every morning at five, she had to get up to clean the house, do the laundry, and cook. The slightest mistake earned her a beating and a torrent of abuse."The floor isn't clean! Are you trying to slack off?"The food tastes awful! Are you trying to starve us?"Those were the exact words they'd once used to berate me.Now, they were thrown right back at Rosie.Late at night, Mom and Dad would force her to kneel in front of my portrait and repent."Say it! How did you kill your sister?"Say it! Tell us how cruel you are!"Rosie kneeled on the cold floor while recounting her crimes. Her voice went from trembling, to numb, and finally to hysterical.I floated in midair and watched Rosie, who had once thought she was better than everyone else, crawl on the floor and beg for scraps.I laughed bitterly. 'What goes around comes around.'She was the one who had to ato

It was a family portrait. It was the only photo of the four of us together from twenty years ago.In the photo, I was smiling widely while holding Rosie's hand. My eyes were filled with hope for the future. That photo had once been torn to pieces by Mom in a fit of anger. It was because I'd accidentally knocked over Rosie's medicine.I couldn't bear to throw it away.I picked up every single piece, carefully taped them back together with clear tape, and hid it in this tin box. I held it dear and close.Mom picked up the photo with trembling hands and turned it over. There was a crooked line of childish handwriting on the back. It was written with a pencil. The words had already faded somewhat.[I wish the kidnappers had taken me that day. Rosie wouldn't have been in pain, and Mom and Dad wouldn't have been sad. I'm a bad girl. I deserve to die.]That one line completely broke Mom's heart. "S-Sophie. My Sophie–"She clutched the photo tightly against her chest and let out a h

Rosie's face instantly turned pale. She had never imagined that the secret she'd hidden all these years would be exposed."I-I have no idea what you're talking about–""No idea?" Mom stepped forward and slapped her hard across the face. "That fortune teller has already been arrested! He confessed to everything!"Rosie! How could you be so heartless? She's your sister!"You got her killed just because you wanted all our love to yourself and didn't want to do any work!"Mom sobbed hysterically. Thinking about everything they'd done to me over the past twenty years, she wanted nothing more than to kill the monster standing before her."I-I didn't mean to–"Rosie covered her face. Tears instantly streamed down her cheeks. "I-I was scared that you wouldn't love me anymore–""Enough!" Dad roared. "From today on, you're no longer part of the Jackson family! We won't pay a single cent of your medical bills anymore! Whatever happens to you has nothing to do with us!"After Rosie was t

After the old man was identified, he glanced at my parents and suddenly snorted. "Well, well. Isn't this the gullible rich guy I met?""The gullible rich guy?" Dad froze."Of course." The old man sneered. "Back then, I was only passing by your house. I only wanted to con you out of a meal."But your older daughter secretly slipped me five hundred bucks after hearing that I could make her parents love only her."I figured I'd be stupid not to take the money, so I casually told you that her little sister was a jinx and she was the lucky one."I never expected you to actually believe me! Hahaha! Your family was the easiest I've ever conned!"Thump.Dad nearly lost his balance. Mom pointed at the fortune teller, but for a long time, she couldn't get a single word out. "Y-You!"'Five hundred bucks.' I suddenly remembered. That year, five hundred bucks really had gone missing from our house. It had been Dad's freshly issued bonus.Back then, Mom and Dad had searched everywhere and

When they returned home, police tape had already been stretched across the entrance downstairs. The neighbors stood gathered in the hallway, pointing and whispering, while their eyes filled with disgust and contempt."That's the family. They abused their daughter and didn't even find out she was dead until she started decomposing.""What a tragedy. That girl was always so well-behaved. How did she end up with parents like that?"Mom and Dad lowered their heads and slipped through the police tape while trying to look invisible. The stench inside the apartment was even stronger than before. It carried an oppressive feeling that was almost suffocating. The forensic pathologist was packing up his equipment. My corpse was next to him. It was already sealed inside a body bag. When the young forensic pathologist saw Mom and Dad enter, he removed his mask."Are you her family members?"The deceased, Sophie, had multiple old injuries across her body, severe malnutrition, and almost no

They were gone for another three days.During those three days, they fussed over Rosie at the hospital and had her undergo every examination imaginable.Meanwhile, my corpse continued to decompose inside that sealed room.Three days later, the stench had spread through the ventilation system and permeated the entire building. The neighbors could no longer stand it and called the police. When the police broke down the door, several young auxiliary officers threw up on the spot.Even the forensic pathologist, who was wearing a gas mask, couldn't help but stare at the horrific state of the scene with his eyes wide open."This is terrible. She'd been dead for at least eight days, and her body had also suffered injuries inflicted after death."When the police called Dad, he was peeling an apple for Rosie in the hospital."Hello? Who is this?""This is a call from South City Police Station. Are you Sophie's father? You need to return home immediately."Dad frowned impatiently. "Of
