Chapter 2

Autor: Brandy Branch
“Once I get back, how about I make it up to you with a honeymoon in Fernford? Just the two of us this time. We won’t take anyone else.”

He gave me a brief hug as if to reassure me, then eagerly returned to the banquet hall to discuss the travel plans with my parents.

I stared at the detailed itinerary I’d spent more than two weeks putting together on my phone. It felt as though someone had carved out a piece of my heart.

True to his word, Adrian moved the trip up to three days later.

For those three days, I barely saw Adrian or my parents at home.

Elena was thrilled. She practically posted on social media eight times a day.

Whenever they returned, they came home carrying bags upon bags of clothes and accessories for Elena’s vacation outfits. There was barely any room left to walk.

So I stayed late at the office instead.

When I finally went home three days later, the house was empty.

Elena had posted a photo of the four of them at the airport.

“The whole family is off to Valehaven!”

I opened the live photo attached to her post and heard my parents’ voices in the background.

“Good thing Madison didn’t notice that the mystery boxes had been switched. Otherwise, how could the four of us have enjoyed this trip together?”

My fingers tightened around my phone.

I stood there, frozen.

At that moment, a message from Adrian appeared on my screen.

“Madison, I had my assistant calculate and we should get a few hundred thousand dollars from the wedding. I added some money of my own and transferred $200,000 to Elena.

“It’s her first time traveling abroad. She’ll want to buy things, so how can she go without enough spending money?

“I deducted it from your year-end bonus, sweetheart.”

He even added a cute kiss emoji at the end.

It was one of the emojis Elena used all the time.

I stared at the screen, my heart sinking as though it had been weighed down by a thousand-pound stone and dropped into an icy abyss.

I could barely breathe.

A new comment suddenly appeared beneath Elena’s post. It was from one of her college roommates.

“Wow, Elena! Is that the emerald bracelet you’re wearing? The one that was sold for a fortune to an anonymous billionaire at an auction in Paris eighty years ago?”

Elena replied:

“Yep. It’s the Whitmore family heirloom that’s passed down exclusively to the wives of the Whitmore men.”

She never mentioned who the bracelet actually belonged to.

Then, to make matters worse, Adrian liked her comment.

A moment later, Mom and Dad did the same.

I stared at my phone until my eyes slowly filled with tears.

When I finally looked up, I wiped them away and submitted my resignation through my phone.

Adrian wasn’t at the office, so I followed the usual procedure and processed my resignation through his account.

My resignation notice was one month.

That month would be my final deadline to put an end to this relationship.

That evening, I was working late in my study when Elena suddenly started a video call.

The moment I answered, the lively chatter of my family filled the otherwise quiet room.

Elena sat on the edge of the plush bed in their presidential suite and waved at me.

“Hey, Madison! Miss you!

“I just posted my latest video. Go like it for me!”

Mom’s helpless sigh came from somewhere off-camera.

“You, honestly. Don’t bother your sister while she’s working.

“You’re always so mischievous. What will your future mother-in-law do with you once you get married?”

Adrian sat quietly behind Elena, his head lowered as he checked his emails on his phone. He didn’t even look up when he heard my voice.

But then he suddenly raised his head.

“Elena’s still young. We need to be careful when choosing someone for her. She shouldn’t rush into marriage.”

My heart skipped a beat.

When the phone rang, I was busy with work.It kept ringing, over and over, refusing to stop.I finally had no choice but to answer.“Madison Hayes, have you lost your mind?“Whitmore is offering you an incredible job, and you’ll never find another one like it. How could you possibly resign?“Get back here and apologize to Adrian. Then report to work tomorrow like you’re supposed to.”I irritably tapped my fingers against the desk.“Mom, I already have a new job, and I’ve sold my house.“I’m not going back to Whitmore. And you don’t need to call me anymore.“Also, Adrian and I aren’t getting married. We’ve broken up. Make sure you tell our relatives and friends.”With that, I hung up.To keep them from contacting me again, I blocked Adrian, Elena, Mom, and Dad.I even blocked the relatives who might try to contact me on Mom’s behalf.Life became much quieter after that.A little over a month later, I’d finally settled into my new city. Work was going better and better, too

Adrian picked up the phone and dialed his assistant.“Who can tell me when Madison resigned?”His assistant answered respectfully.“Mr. Whitmore, our records show that Ms. Hayes submitted her resignation a month ago. You were the one who approved it.”Adrian froze. What had he been doing a month ago?Valehaven. The sunshine, the tropical islands, the crystal-blue water. He’d been taking pictures of Elena.Elena had wanted to try a dessert from a popular bakery, so he’d driven two hours just to take her there for a slice of cake.At the time, he’d thought Elena was different from Madison. She was more carefree and loved sweet treats. A little time and money were enough to make her happy. And Madison? She was strong. It always seemed like she could carry every burden on her own and never needed him to worry about her. She’d never shown him her softer, more vulnerable side. But he suddenly realized that perhaps he’d been ignoring what she truly needed all along. He remembere

A few moments later, Adrian sent me another message.“Fine. I’m sorry, okay?”“Elena is your sister. Of course I’m going to look after her. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do for you? If it really bothers you that much, I won’t come to your parents’ house anymore. How’s that?”His messages were becoming increasingly irritating.I opened Adrian’s profile, blocked him, and deleted our chat. Two minutes later, my phone rang.I frowned but answered anyway.“Madison, what the hell is this? Are you giving me the silent treatment now?“You’ve been skipping work. Do you realize I can fire you for that?“Apologize to Elena and make it up to her. Otherwise…”“Otherwise what?”I cut him off.“You’ll give my projects to someone else?“Adrian, do you even realize that the three projects I was handling are already finished?”Adrian fell silent for a moment.Of course he hadn’t known. Ever since he proposed to me, he’d grown to trust me more and more, leaving most of the company’s affa

In the new city, I rented a small place near my new office. Thanks to the high-pressure environment I had gotten used to at Whitmore, I adapted to my new job quickly. Before long, I had already brought in several new clients for the company.Meanwhile, Elena continued messaging me.“Madison, why haven’t you been coming to the office lately? Is it because you don’t want to work with me?”“I didn't mean to be that close to Adrian. Adrian said it wouldn’t be appropriate at work.”“Madison, why didn’t you tell me the food at Whitmore’s cafeteria was so good? When are you coming back? We can go eat together!”“Madison, I was only joking with you on graduation day. You’re not actually still mad, are you?”“Don’t be angry. I’ll ask Mom to make your favorite garlic shrimp tonight. Come home for dinner, okay?”I didn’t reply to a single message. Then, unexpectedly, Mom, who had never sent me a message in that chat before, texted me.“Madison Hayes, what did you do to upset Elena this

After I hung up, Megan showed the young woman around the house. She looked like she had only graduated a few years ago.“She’s in the same boat as you,” Megan said with a smile. “She’s been saving up and wants a place she can finally call home in the city.“I’m sure you two can work something out.”I nodded. There was still some bread in the kitchen that I’d bought for breakfast before work. I wouldn’t be able to finish it now, so I offered some to Megan and the young woman.“I’m leaving the city next week because I’m starting a new job elsewhere. If you really like the house, I’m willing to negotiate on the price.“I’d prefer to finish the paperwork before then because I may not be coming back to this city.“The house is in great condition. I only bought it a few years ago, and I rarely stayed here, so everything is still fairly new. There’s barely any wear and tear. It’s perfect for someone living alone.”I looked around at everything in the house.“If you’re interested, I

When I got home, the rain was coming down even harder.Rain battered the windows, turning everything outside into a blur of white.I changed into dry clothes and took a hot shower. Even afterward, I couldn’t stop myself from sneezing.I put on a warm set of pajamas and made myself a cup of tea with brown sugar in the kitchen. Then I rummaged through the refrigerator and pulled out some chicken and mushrooms I’d bought a few days ago. I put them on the stove to simmer. Before long, the house was filled with the comforting aroma of chicken and mushroom soup. After drying my hair, I curled up on the couch and watched the latest romance drama. For the first time in a long while, I felt completely at peace. The real estate agent messaged me, asking for more detailed photos of the house.I took pictures of every room and sent them over. Then I looked around my home, overcome by a strange sense of déjà vu.I’d saved for several years after graduating and bought this little house out
