Chapter 1

I stood there completely stunned, staring at Adrian and my parents in disbelief.

They all seemed to be waiting for me to take off the bracelet.

Elena gave me a playful wink.

“Madison, you’re not seriously going to back out of the bet, are you?”

Mom spoke up beside her.

“Madison, Elena just wants to have some fun and wear it for a couple of days. Don’t be so stingy. A bet’s a bet. Don’t be a sore loser.”

I lowered my eyes and let out a bitter, humorless smile.

The bracelet was too small for Elena’s wrist, so I gripped it tightly and pulled it off, scraping my skin in the process.

A red mark immediately appeared across the back of my hand.

“Here. Take it.”

I handed the bracelet to Adrian.

He took it without hesitation, then gently covered Elena’s hand with a silk handkerchief before carefully sliding the bracelet onto her wrist.

“I thought Elena might be too young to pull off a piece like this, but it actually looks better on her than it did on Madison.”

My parents smiled delightedly as they took Elena’s hand and admired the bracelet.

“Elena, be careful with it. Don’t break it. Otherwise, you’ll have some explaining to do to your future brother-in-law.”

Adrian merely smiled.

“It’s just a bracelet. I can afford to replace three or five of them if they break.

“As long as Elena keeps that lively spirit of hers. Don’t become dull like your sister. You’re the sweetheart of this family.”

He affectionately pinched Elena’s cheek while my parents gently held her hands.

And I stood there like a complete outsider.

I turned and walked to the restroom, mechanically rubbing the red mark on the back of my hand.

Today was supposed to be my engagement party.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

Footsteps approached from behind.

Adrian came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of my neck.

“Why are you still acting like a child and getting upset over something so small?

“It’s just a bracelet. Whether you have it or not, everyone at Whitmore Industries already knows you’re going to be my wife.”

He took my hand and gently blew on the swollen, reddened skin.

“Your wrist looks a little bare now. How about I take you shopping for a bracelet later?”

I turned around and pushed Adrian away, putting some distance between us.

“Adrian, are you really taking Elena on our honeymoon?”

“Of course.”

He answered without hesitation.

“Madison, you’ve always kept your word. Why are you suddenly trying to get out of the bet now?

“Elena is graduating soon anyway. I thought I’d move the trip up and take her before the wedding. It’ll be a graduation trip for her.”

I stared at Adrian, unable to believe what I was hearing.

He looked at me and smiled, gently cupping my cheeks and giving them a playful squeeze.

“She wants to try cliff jumping by the ocean. Before she graduates, I want to make sure she gets the chance.

“I remember you’re afraid of heights. You wouldn’t have much fun anyway. Besides, you can take care of the company’s little errands while I’m away, right, sweetheart?”

When the phone rang, I was busy with work.It kept ringing, over and over, refusing to stop.I finally had no choice but to answer.“Madison Hayes, have you lost your mind?“Whitmore is offering you an incredible job, and you’ll never find another one like it. How could you possibly resign?“Get back here and apologize to Adrian. Then report to work tomorrow like you’re supposed to.”I irritably tapped my fingers against the desk.“Mom, I already have a new job, and I’ve sold my house.“I’m not going back to Whitmore. And you don’t need to call me anymore.“Also, Adrian and I aren’t getting married. We’ve broken up. Make sure you tell our relatives and friends.”With that, I hung up.To keep them from contacting me again, I blocked Adrian, Elena, Mom, and Dad.I even blocked the relatives who might try to contact me on Mom’s behalf.Life became much quieter after that.A little over a month later, I’d finally settled into my new city. Work was going better and better, too

Adrian picked up the phone and dialed his assistant.“Who can tell me when Madison resigned?”His assistant answered respectfully.“Mr. Whitmore, our records show that Ms. Hayes submitted her resignation a month ago. You were the one who approved it.”Adrian froze. What had he been doing a month ago?Valehaven. The sunshine, the tropical islands, the crystal-blue water. He’d been taking pictures of Elena.Elena had wanted to try a dessert from a popular bakery, so he’d driven two hours just to take her there for a slice of cake.At the time, he’d thought Elena was different from Madison. She was more carefree and loved sweet treats. A little time and money were enough to make her happy. And Madison? She was strong. It always seemed like she could carry every burden on her own and never needed him to worry about her. She’d never shown him her softer, more vulnerable side. But he suddenly realized that perhaps he’d been ignoring what she truly needed all along. He remembere

A few moments later, Adrian sent me another message.“Fine. I’m sorry, okay?”“Elena is your sister. Of course I’m going to look after her. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do for you? If it really bothers you that much, I won’t come to your parents’ house anymore. How’s that?”His messages were becoming increasingly irritating.I opened Adrian’s profile, blocked him, and deleted our chat. Two minutes later, my phone rang.I frowned but answered anyway.“Madison, what the hell is this? Are you giving me the silent treatment now?“You’ve been skipping work. Do you realize I can fire you for that?“Apologize to Elena and make it up to her. Otherwise…”“Otherwise what?”I cut him off.“You’ll give my projects to someone else?“Adrian, do you even realize that the three projects I was handling are already finished?”Adrian fell silent for a moment.Of course he hadn’t known. Ever since he proposed to me, he’d grown to trust me more and more, leaving most of the company’s affa

In the new city, I rented a small place near my new office. Thanks to the high-pressure environment I had gotten used to at Whitmore, I adapted to my new job quickly. Before long, I had already brought in several new clients for the company.Meanwhile, Elena continued messaging me.“Madison, why haven’t you been coming to the office lately? Is it because you don’t want to work with me?”“I didn't mean to be that close to Adrian. Adrian said it wouldn’t be appropriate at work.”“Madison, why didn’t you tell me the food at Whitmore’s cafeteria was so good? When are you coming back? We can go eat together!”“Madison, I was only joking with you on graduation day. You’re not actually still mad, are you?”“Don’t be angry. I’ll ask Mom to make your favorite garlic shrimp tonight. Come home for dinner, okay?”I didn’t reply to a single message. Then, unexpectedly, Mom, who had never sent me a message in that chat before, texted me.“Madison Hayes, what did you do to upset Elena this

After I hung up, Megan showed the young woman around the house. She looked like she had only graduated a few years ago.“She’s in the same boat as you,” Megan said with a smile. “She’s been saving up and wants a place she can finally call home in the city.“I’m sure you two can work something out.”I nodded. There was still some bread in the kitchen that I’d bought for breakfast before work. I wouldn’t be able to finish it now, so I offered some to Megan and the young woman.“I’m leaving the city next week because I’m starting a new job elsewhere. If you really like the house, I’m willing to negotiate on the price.“I’d prefer to finish the paperwork before then because I may not be coming back to this city.“The house is in great condition. I only bought it a few years ago, and I rarely stayed here, so everything is still fairly new. There’s barely any wear and tear. It’s perfect for someone living alone.”I looked around at everything in the house.“If you’re interested, I

When I got home, the rain was coming down even harder.Rain battered the windows, turning everything outside into a blur of white.I changed into dry clothes and took a hot shower. Even afterward, I couldn’t stop myself from sneezing.I put on a warm set of pajamas and made myself a cup of tea with brown sugar in the kitchen. Then I rummaged through the refrigerator and pulled out some chicken and mushrooms I’d bought a few days ago. I put them on the stove to simmer. Before long, the house was filled with the comforting aroma of chicken and mushroom soup. After drying my hair, I curled up on the couch and watched the latest romance drama. For the first time in a long while, I felt completely at peace. The real estate agent messaged me, asking for more detailed photos of the house.I took pictures of every room and sent them over. Then I looked around my home, overcome by a strange sense of déjà vu.I’d saved for several years after graduating and bought this little house out
