Chapter 1

I watched my brother, Leroy Graham, pick up a pen through the window of the mediation room.

He was facing a lawsuit because he was accused of damaging factory equipment caused by an operational error.

We were supposed to meet and discuss a strategy for compensation today, but Emilia Barton had locked me out.

There she was, standing beside Leroy, wearing a tight frown while gesturing wildly in front of him.

Leroy, who was frantically looking around for me, began to shrink as Emilia went on gesturing. Eventually, he lowered his head and gripped the pen tightly.

With that, he signed the liability admission and the deed transferring the mortgage on the house.

“Don’t sign it, Leroy! Stop!”

I pounded wildly at the glass door until I finally managed to barge inside.

I tried to seize the signed agreement so I could rip it apart, but Emilia was a step ahead of me. She grabbed it and clutched it against her body to protect it.

Then, she turned to me, her bloodshot eyes fixed on mine, and shouted, “You can’t keep forcing him into doing what you want!”

I ignored her and proceeded to produce a stack of bank statements from my bag.

“Leroy, we can afford the fine! If worst comes to worst, I can withdraw all my investments! The house is the last remaining asset our parents left for you, you can't mortgage it to her! I'll sell everything I have if it means I can protect you from getting blacklisted from the industry!”

Ever since an accident that occurred after his university entrance exam, Leroy had become deaf and mute. Since then, his personality had become very neurotic.

He was staring intently at the bank statements I held and drawing heavy breaths.

Suddenly, he shoved me out of the way without warning.

I dropped the bank statements to the ground. Its contents detailed the savings I scraped together with my blood, sweat, and tears over the past few years.

I staggered backward and bumped into a table before crying out, “Are you insane? I'm your sister!”

Meanwhile, Emilia rushed to him and patted his back before proceeding to gesture wildly in sign language again.

I did not understand sign language, but Leroy’s reaction told me everything I needed to know.

He stared at me with a brazen look in his eyes and his face flushed red. Then his mouth grew wide open as he howled at me.

“Quit provoking him!” Emilia cried out exasperatedly with tears in her eyes while turning to the mediator, “Mediator, are you seeing this? Leroy’s sister had always shunned him just because he was disabled and considered him a disgrace. When the factory accident happened, she refused to hand over a single cent and even blamed Leroy for dragging her into this!

“Leroy wanted to transfer the house to my mother so she could help manage the property while he borrowed money from loan sharks to pay off his debts. He would much rather save his dignity than have to put up with his sister looking down on him!”

The mediator, who was a woman in her fifties, frowned upon hearing this. Then, she looked at Leroy, who was heaving heavy breaths.

“Madam,” the mediator tapped the table before turning to me and said, “This is an office, not a place to throw your weight around with your brother. If you don’t want to help your brother, then so be it, but why are you causing a scene if his fiancée is willing to give up everything to help him? You should have some self-awareness!”

I protested, “That’s not true! I gave him the money for his driving lessons while she… Look, I even brought my bank statements with me today!”

I bent over to grab my bank statements while scrambling for an explanation.

Emilia did not give me the luxury of defending myself. She tucked the agreement in her bag before helping Leroy up. “Let’s go, Leroy. We don’t have to care about what she thinks.”

She even shoulder-checked me as she walked past, nearly throwing me off my feet.

I watched desolately as they walked out of the room.

By the time I chased after them, Leroy was already entering a taxi.

Then, the windows rolled down. Emilia stared at me with a smug smile. There were no longer tears in her eyes.

I was shaking. It felt like the sun was charring my skin. Where had it all gone wrong?

Why was Leroy so hostile toward me when all I wanted was to help him?

It did not end well for Emilia and Dana.Since they were suspected of several charges of serious offenses, the police immediately had them placed in criminal detention.Mike, who had been hiding the entire time, was caught by the loan sharks as he tried to flee the city. They severed his tendons, and left him near a dumpster. By the time the police found him, he was already crippled. The three-hundred-thousand-dollar bridge loan Dana took out had wiped out her retirement savings. After everything that went down, the loan sharks pulled some strings and had her house seized by foreclosure. With that, she was left homeless and forced to scavenge for food in the garbage near the detention center. Her hair turned white nearly overnight. Despite seeking help everywhere she could think of, she was only met with scorn and ridicule. She got what she deserved. The supervisor involved in the scheme was dismissed and prosecuted as well. Meanwhile, the factory manager decided to waive Le

Leroy suddenly unleashed a terrible cry that echoed across the building. He was shaking violently. He no longer regarded Emilia with the same trust. When he began to speak to her using sign language, his gestures were performed with an overwhelming emotion that was evocative of his agitation.“All this time, you have been lying to me? I trusted you wholeheartedly, but all you wanted was to steal my house!”Emilia recoiled in hurt but continued to deny the allegations as she signed back at him. “It’s not… Leroy, please let me explain. It was your sister who forced me to do this…”I interrupted them sharply. “Of course you’d want to deceive Leroy. How else are you going to seize his property and make off with the money so you can pay off your lover's gambling debts?”With that, I unveiled my trump card. I produced a stack of bank statements, each stamped with the bank's official seal, from my bag and scattered them all over the floor.“Did you think the house was the only thing I h

By eight-fifty on Monday, the lobby was already packed to the brim with people.Emilia, Dana, and a pale, haggard Leroy were already waiting by the window. My uncle and aunt were present as witnesses as well. Emilia had already done the due diligence of speaking to the rest of her relatives beforehand to convince them that I had falsified the translation of her sign language to sow discord between her and Leroy. At nine o’clock, I pushed the glass door open and stepped inside.I was accompanied by two notary staff and Mr. Newman, the sign language interpreter. He wore a badge verifying his status as a court-certified expert in sign language translation. Additionally, he carried a briefcase containing his credentials from the State Commission for the Disabled, photocopies of court case files from the past years, and several videos of Emilia communicating in sign language I had carefully made copies of beforehand.Emilia turned deathly pale the moment she saw the badge Mr. Newman w

On Saturday morning, I had just gotten in touch with Mr. Newman, a language interpreter from the State Commission for the Disabled, when the doorbell rang.“Leah! Come out right now!”It was my uncle shouting outside. When I looked through the peephole, I saw the hallway crowded with people. There was my uncle, my aunt, Emilia, and Dana. They were all in a hysterical fit.In the middle was Leroy, who was dragged along by them. His eyes were sunken, and he seemed like he was agitated to the point of breaking.I proceeded to open the door and confront them icily while leaning against the doorframe.“Leah! Have you no shame?” my uncle exclaimed while pointing an accusing finger at me, “You’re coming with me right now to lift the injunction! I’ll have you know that the factory manager brought a crew of people to Leroy’s house yesterday to demand payment! Are you going to just watch idly while they put your brother behind bars? You’re his sister, how could you be so heartless?”My a

I gripped my phone so tightly that my knuckles turned white. The true translation of Emilia’s sign language cleared up all the illogical events of the past six months.“Go to hell…”I could feel my stomach churning with rage while I muttered to myself.Since the agent had stepped outside to send off another client, I took a deep breath to suppress my rage before collecting the fragments of the receipt.Though I could not piece it back together, the important information was salvaged.[Trustee/Mortgagee: Dana Barton][Estimated Valuation: $2,800,000][Full Sum of Loan Repayment: $300,000]I chuckled to myself. So much for the devoted fiancée selling everything she had to pay off her fiancé’s debts! This whole time, she planned to trick Leroy into signing a 2.8 million dollar agreement to sell the house. She had neatly disguised it with the intention of paying off his loan.Once everything was concluded, the house would be formally transferred to her mother. This was all part

“There are three hundred thousand in that card and another hundred-and-fifty-thousand in my savings account. That’s enough to cover the fine.”Then, I fixed an iron look at Emilia and said aloud, “We’re not selling the house, I’ll pay the fine! All Leroy needs to do is focus on his recovery. I won’t have him pay even a single cent!”Emilia turned deathly pale in an instant while her eyes widened in panic. She began to dart her eyes around the room frantically. If I paid off the fine, her meticulous plan to sell the house and take all the money for herself would fall apart. With that, she turned to Leroy and started to gesture exaggeratedly in sign language again. She was a masterful actor and even faked tears so she would come across as being the victim in this situation. At first, all Leroy did was stare at the items I set on the table with a flicker of doubt in his eyes. After several seconds of Emilia speaking to him using sign language, his body language changed, and he became
