FAZER LOGINBella’s POV
The remaining drive home was engulfed in complete silence. I jumped out of the car the moment it came to a halt, hoping he wouldn’t choose to come in—because I wouldn’t know how to behave.
I glanced at the closed door behind me. I knew Mom and Lisa were probably inside. Mom spent most of her time in the kitchen, while Lisa, as usual, would keep herself busy with office work.
I could sneak to my room without having to face their endless tantrums and questions.
But that hope shattered the moment Kane climbed out of the car. I frowned. “What are you doing?”
I couldn’t believe his guts. After fucking me, he still had the balls to want to meet Lisa? No sense of guilt? Shame? Nothing?
“Going in, of course.” He intentionally bumped his shoulder against mine, causing me to stumble to the side.
My lips parted in an attempt to say something—anything—to stop him, but before I could bring myself to mutter a word, he had reached for the doorbell and pressed it.
Fear spiraled through every fiber of my body. I knew he wouldn’t say anything about what happened between us, but I couldn’t stop the fear that kept echoing in my head.
I bit my lip, fighting back the urge to cry.
The door opened and Lisa came into view. Her face lit up almost immediately upon seeing Kane. She threw herself into his arms. Kane didn’t move to hug her; he just stood there and let her hold him.
“You didn’t tell me you’d come,” Lisa said as she pulled away, but she frowned almost immediately when her eyes found me standing in the far corner.
“Bella?”
I pressed my lips into a thin line and forced a smile. “Yup, it’s me.” I stepped forward, trying so hard to act normal.
Her gaze moved between Kane and me. “Did you two come together?”
I didn’t let the words settle. I blurted before I could think, “No.”
But Kane was in no mood to let me off the hook. “Yes.”
Confusion etched itself onto Lisa’s face at our different responses to the same question. Her eyes narrowed on me, and in that moment it felt like she could see through everything I was trying to hide.
I glanced everywhere but at Lisa. Whatever this was, I had to keep quiet.
“I saw her by the road on my drive here, so I decided to give her a lift…” Kane went on to explain.
But that didn’t stop the glare Lisa was giving me. “What happened to your car?”
“At the mechanic,” I whispered. She gave me a close look. I knew this wasn’t over, but she was willing to push it aside as she let Kane in.
I lingered a little longer outside before following them inside.
Like I had guessed, Mom had just finished cooking and was setting the table. When she saw Kane, her face lit up instantly. The wrinkle lines across her face blurred as if they had never been there, a smile plastering itself across her features.
“Goodness!” she exclaimed, dabbing her hands on the front of her apron in an attempt to clean them.
“Who would’ve thought you’d choose to visit us today of all days?” she continued, stretching out a hand for a shake. But Kane pulled her into a hug she wasn’t expecting.
Neither was I. He acted so calm, so polite—like the perfect gentleman. But underneath that disguise was a monster, a freak, a man who didn’t give a damn about anyone else.
I rolled my eyes. This wasn’t for me. I’d rather go to my room than stay here and watch him fake being someone he isn’t.
I hadn’t even taken a step when Mom’s voice cut through from behind.
“And where are you going, Bella Calvin?” Her voice was sharp and fierce—nothing like the warm, sweet tone she used when speaking to Kane.
“Where else if not to my room, Melissa?” I shot back. Calling my mom by her name is something I do, and the glare she gave me made it clear she didn’t approve.
But who cares? I only do what I want and won’t bend to anyone. Well… there’s an exception now, thanks to whatever trick Kane pulled on me.
“You…” Mom started, anger flaring in her eyes as she stared at me.
I ran my tongue over my teeth, my eyes darting everywhere but her face.
“How did I end up birthing you? A daughter who has no dreams and zero zeal to be something better.” She shook her head in pity.
I knew the kind of thoughts running through her head. She probably wished I had never been part of her life. Or wished I was more like Lisa.
But that’s my problem. I can’t be Lisa. She’s her own person, and she finds happiness in what she does. I don’t. And I am my own person.
Honestly, it’s been a struggle for me just to understand myself. As much as it puzzles them, it puzzles me too. But that’s me—and they just have to deal with it.
Mom took a deep breath, exhaling all the anger and heat she had been holding onto.
“I’m sure you don’t need a personal reminder to join us for dinner.” She turned and continued placing the plates on the table.
Kane’s eyes were on me. He said nothing. I watched him pull out a seat for Lisa and guide her into it as if she couldn’t do it herself.
He turned and found me still standing there. “You heard Mrs. Calvin. Get a seat.” His words were firm—sounded gentle, but the weight of the order pressed down on me.
He knew I wouldn’t stay, so he decided to make me. It didn’t matter if I liked it or not. I bit my lip, fighting back the embarrassment that settled heavy in my chest as I carried myself to the dining table and sat.
I saw the look on both Lisa’s and Melissa’s faces—shocked, surprised that I had done what Kane said without fighting.
I lowered my head, too ashamed to face them. Most especially him.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”I used the last strength left in me and pushed Kane away. I managed to shove him only a few inches off me, but the distance didn’t last. He crashed back against me almost instantly, seizing me again and claiming my mouth in another hungry kiss.I felt my body tremble at his touch as I completely melted under him. The familiar taste of his warm mouth—something I had missed so terribly—flooded my senses, and my body lost control the way it always did with him, as if I had been made to submit. Every part of me remembered how to yield.I was trying so hard not to kiss him back, not to show him just how much I had been thinking about him, about his hands and mouth all over me. Yet the effort felt useless against the heat rising between us.Kane growled deep in his throat. His hand found my neck and squeezed—hard enough to send a sharp, electric stimulation through my brain, but not hard enough to choke me. The pressure only made everything sharper
I felt Kane’s reluctance to release me as Steve guided me out of the elevator. We were nearly at the door when Lisa’s voice cut through the air behind us, forcing Steve to stop—and me with him.“Can you come here for a minute? There’s something important we need to check before the files go to Dad.”Steve nodded. “Sure.” He turned to me, voice low. “I’ll be right with you.”I nodded and watched him walk over to where Lisa stood with another woman. Kane was beside them. I could feel the weight of his gaze. I forced my eyes anywhere else. When there was nowhere left to look, I turned and left the room, stepping outside. The city air hit my face—sharp, sun-stung, almost painful after the sterile cool of the building. Before I could take another step, hands seized me from behind and spun me around.A jolt of pain ripped through me as my back slammed hard against the wall.“Ouch—” The soft cry escaped before I could stop it. When I looked up, Kane’s eyes locked onto mine, aggressive and un
Kane never showed up. As if he was truly avoiding me, and that only twisted something aggressive inside me. Because I wanted to see him, even though I knew how badly I would be pained by everything.Still, I wanted to take a look at that face I couldn’t seem to get out of my head.I followed after Lisa as we walked out of the elevator, headed for Kane’s office. Lisa looked so confident and completely relaxed even after everything. I guess I really don’t matter that much to her, right? All the more reason I shouldn’t care about her getting hurt in the process. I sucked in a deep breath, preparing myself to blurt everything out the second we got into the room.It should work that way, right? If I can’t get the man I love, then she shouldn’t either. Right?Call me insane and horrible, but I don’t care. Lisa would be broken, but she won’t stay down. She always finds herself active again. As soon as we entered the room, Lisa walked up to Kane sitting behind the desk and placed a light kiss
"I'll do it."My voice, sharp and intense, cut through the quiet and echoed against the high walls as I climbed down the stairs. Each step felt heavier than the last, the polished tiles cool and unyielding beneath my feet, as if the house itself was listening.Melissa looked up from where she sat. The corners of her eyes tightened, twisting with that familiar mix of suspicion and cold calculation as she watched me descend. From the look on her face alone, I knew she didn’t believe me. She never does. Not once. Not ever.Even if I had ended my life right there on the spot, she still wouldn’t have believed it—unless she saw my lifeless body with her own eyes. That was the kind of proof she always demanded. But I won’t let it come to that. Her validation has never meant anything to me. It never has. So no… I’m not going to throw myself over the edge for her sake. Not for her approval. Not for her peace of mind. Not for anything she thinks she can control. But for now, I’m going to say ye
It can’t be Steve. The thought struck like a physical blow, sharp and disbelieving. No. It can’t.But the truth settled over me in the same breath, heavy and inevitable. This was not random. Nothing about Melissa ever was. This had been arranged long ago, a quiet, careful plan waiting only for the perfect moment to spring shut. Tonight was that moment. My eyes locked on Steve. He was still smiling that wide, triumphant smile—until he saw my face. The expression drained from him in an instant. The smile collapsed. Something like alarm, or guilt, or both, flickered across his features.I didn’t know how to stand, how to breathe, how to exist in the same room after a revelation this large.“You… you knew?” My voice came out hoarse, thick, scraped raw from the effort of holding everything in. Tears burned behind my eyes, insistent, unstoppable. I was breaking, and I hated that I was breaking in front of them—in front of Melissa’s satisfied silence, Lisa’s quiet complicity, and Steve’s
I woke to a fever that clung to my skin like a second, heavier coat. My body ached as if I had run a million miles through mud and broken glass, every joint protesting, every muscle tight and useless. But the physical weight was nothing compared to the heaviness inside me. It felt as though something vast and merciless had crushed me in the night, squeezed until there was nothing left but an empty suit of flesh still going through the motions of breathing.I forced myself upright. The room tilted once, then settled. I dragged a dress over my head—something plain, something that required no thought—rolled my hair into a clean bun with fingers that still trembled, and walked out.The dining room was already occupied. Melissa and Lisa sat at the long table, plates in front of them, silverware moving in quiet, civilized rhythm. Steam rose from coffee cups. Morning light spilled across the polished wood as if the day itself had decided to pretend nothing was wrong.I walked past them as th
