Cole's POV

Dr. Freedman stood in front of me with a grim look on his face, sighing again and again.

"It's pretty rare for someone your age to have this condition. It's mainly because your legs were repeatedly broken and left to heal without proper medical care…"

He sat down and carefully explained my treatment options. But my cochlea had been damaged to the point of intermittent deafness from all the repeated beatings, and I couldn't hear a word at the moment.

I only managed to catch the last part.

"If we start treatment right away, we can still keep it under control for a few more years. Talk it over with your family and decide which treatment plan you want to go with."

Family? After six years at an orphanage, hearing that word still sent a jolt through me.

I shook my head and smiled through tears.

"I don't have a family."

Dr. Freedman's pen froze midair. He looked over the scars covering my body, then tried to offer some gentle advice.

"Look, son, even if you fought with your family, running away isn't the answer. The world can be cruel, and you'll suffer out there.

"Your sister will be here soon. Whatever it is, just talk things out."

I lowered my head in silence. Maybe, once upon a time, my home really had been my safe haven.

But the moment my older sister, Savannah Shepherd, branded me the fake Shepherd son and dumped me at an orphanage just for Joey Shepherd's sake, I no longer had a home.

And there was no way she would care about me now, either.

I stared blankly at the ceiling. Just as I was about to turn over, the door suddenly flew open.

"Cole Shepherd! When are you going to stop? You couldn't reach me, so you deliberately hurt yourself to make me come see you?"

Savannah's familiar voice left me stunned for a moment.

So, all those times I had been beaten within an inch of my life by delinquents and had no choice but to call her, begging her to let me leave the orphanage, she had known I was the one calling.

She just hadn't wanted to answer.

I lowered my head and laughed bitterly. When I finally looked up, my bloodshot eyes met hers. I squared my shoulders and gritted my teeth.

"So what? You were so afraid I'd keep bothering you that you wouldn't even answer my calls? You just hate me—your own flesh and blood—that much?"

Her eyes widened and slowly reddened as she clenched her fists tighter and tighter.

We both knew exactly what this was about, and we remained locked in a tense standoff.

Finally, Savannah unclenched her fists and lowered her head, looking deflated.

"I only did this so Joey could have a happy childhood. You were already living a very good life, but his mother died because of our family.

"Taking care of him was a promise I made to his mother. And you've always been overbearing and bullied him, so I had no choice."

I nodded with a knowing smile, but the pain in my heart multiplied a thousandfold.

So, just so Joey could have a happy childhood, I deserved to be dumped in an orphanage, bullied and ostracized until I wished I were dead, and end up with bone cancer?

I held back my tears and spoke up again.

"What about Mom and Dad?"

She knitted her brows, but her face was devoid of any other emotion.

"We made the decision together. But we've already agreed to bring you home once Joey's emotional state stabilizes."

I thought I could accept it calmly, but hearing it directly from her mouth was a different story.

The bloody truth still slammed into my heart like a sledgehammer.

So the whole family knew. Yet, they were perfectly at ease letting me suffer just for the sake of Joey, our housekeeper's son.

My tears finally broke free.

I wished I really were the fake son of the family. I would rather have frozen to death outside that day.

At least then, maybe it wouldn't hurt this much.

Cole's POVMy soul jolted midair.Six years had passed, and she still remembered that I loved churros.Once, when I was a kid, I had gotten upset. Savannah, wanting to cheer me up, pulled a bag of churros out from behind her back like a magician. My parents had always limited my sugar intake at home, so the moment I saw the churros, my bad mood vanished instantly. After that, whenever I wanted something sweet, I would pretend to be mad at her. She always saw right through my act, but she would play along anyway, placating me with a bag of churros. And each time, I would feel like the luckiest boy on earth. The vendor chuckled and handed her a paper bag filled with warm churros."You sure are a great sister, driving all around town on New Year's Day just to buy these for your brother."Savannah took them with a smile but said nothing. She got back into her car and quickly drove off toward the orphanage.I knew she had bought them to cheer me up.If the old Cole Shepherd had l

Cole's POVI followed Savannah out the door, floating above her as I watched the Grayford scenery pass us by.Looking back, it all felt so absurd.Over the past six years, everyone at the orphanage had alienated me, whether they were kids my age, older than me, or younger than me. Even the cafeteria lady would kick me in disgust whenever she saw me.Because of that, I wasn't allowed to participate in any of the activities there. When the other children went on spring outings, I was deliberately locked in the basement for the entire day. At mealtimes, my bowl usually held nothing but a few green leaves, while everyone else enjoyed all kinds of delicious food. And so, whenever I was too hungry to sleep, I'd chug water frantically. If I filled my stomach enough, it could keep the hunger pangs away for a few hours.Every winter, all the other children had thick padded coats. I, on the other hand, only had a few thin jackets and short-sleeved shirts. I'd wear every piece of clothing

Third-Person POVThe family of four was gathered around the table, sharing a family dinner on New Year's Day, when the TV news suddenly cut to a trending headline.Savannah's mother, Trudy Collins, saw it first. Her heart jolted, and the fork in her hand slipped from her trembling fingers and clattered to the floor. She tapped Savannah on the arm."Savannah, look at the photo on the news," she said, her voice quivering. "That boy is wearing the exact same clothes as Cole!"The TV was blaring, so there was no way Savannah hadn't heard what the news anchor had said earlier. She continued scooping food onto Joey's plate before finally looking up at the screen.A video clip was playing. Coroners were shown zipping up a frozen, motionless body in a body bag before lifting it onto a stretcher.Seeing this, she couldn't help but let out a quiet scoff before patting Trudy's hand reassuringly."Mom, how many times has it been, and you still fall for Cole's tricks? The person in the vide

Cole's POVMy body contorted as a blood-curdling scream ripped out of me. The unprecedented level of pain nearly knocked me unconscious.Pure instinct made me want to push Joey away. But before I could even touch him, he tumbled down the steps behind him on his own."Mom! Dad! Savannah! It hurts so bad!"His pitiful cries instantly drowned out my screams of pain.In my daze, I saw the three people inside the restaurant snap their heads toward the window almost instantaneously, right before they frantically got up and rushed across the street.Savannah arrived first. Clearly looking heartbroken, she scooped Joey into her arms in a complete panic and asked what had happened.Mom and Dad followed close behind, throwing themselves next to him and frantically calling him their sweetheart. While checking him for injuries, they hurriedly called for an ambulance.Joey looked utterly aggrieved while lying in Savannah's arms, his nose turning red as he sobbed and pointed at me."I… I t

No one dared to defy her.In the end, I was thrown out onto the street. The impact sent waves of excruciating pain through my bones, leaving me writhing and twitching on the ground. The kind Dr. Freedman couldn't bear to see me like this. He draped the only coat he had over my frail body."Son, I've got a family to support, and I can't afford to lose this job. I can't help you any further, but these pills will ease the pain for a bit."He hurriedly shoved a bottle of painkillers into my hand before the guards yelled at him to leave.I randomly grabbed a handful of pills and stuffed them into my mouth. It took me a long time before I finally came to my senses.I staggered to my feet and stared blankly at the bustling street. It
