Chapter 2

작가: Echo
We never took the family photo. I took Leo straight home and started packing.

Just as I booked our tickets to the southern Sunstone Pack, Fiona sent me a video.

She was wearing an expensive moonstone necklace, and Bruce was standing behind her, gently fixing her hair.

That necklace had a special meaning. It was meant only for the pack’s Luna.

At the end of the video, Fiona taunted me, as always.

"The Luna's necklace, and the Alpha's love—both can be mine whenever I want."

The old me would have shown her just how sharp a Luna’s claws can be.

But now, watching Leo carefully organizing his little bow and arrows, I only had one thought: How pathetic.

I closed the video and confirmed our flight for the day after tomorrow.

It wasn't long before Bruce came home, carrying a warm moonberry pie.

Leo and I both stared.

He used to hate how sweet moonberry pie was.

Because of that, even though Leo inherited my obsession with moonberries, he always chose Bruce’s favorite foods for his birthday.

Why would he bring one home now?

Leo and I exchanged a look of disbelief.

Bruce walked in slowly. When he saw the open suitcases, his expression changed.

"Tony was crying his eyes out, so I stayed a little longer. On the way back, I remembered you two love moonberry pie, so I picked one up."

He looked at the luggage. "What's all this? Are you going on a trip?"

I shook my head, then nodded.

"Something like that."

With only two days left until the full moon, I didn’t want any surprises.

For some reason, my answer seemed to put him at ease. He continued, "The studio said you never took the photo. I rescheduled. How about tomorrow? I promise I won't be late this time."

He knelt in front of Leo, his voice sincere.

Leo, who was packing his bow, paused. He looked at Bruce, then at me.

He was torn, afraid to believe.

Seeing his hesitation, my heart softened.

"Okay," I said.

It's only for one last time, anyway.

As soon as I agreed, Leo's eyes lit up. He hugged his little bow and scampered into his room.

Once he was gone, I went back to packing. Bruce came and stood beside me, his familiar Alpha scent wrapping around me. He spoke, a hint of his old, practiced affection in his voice, the same tone he always used when he wanted to smooth things over.

"About what Leo called me today… 'Alpha'…"

My heart skipped a beat. I looked up at him.

He knelt down, placing the pie next to my hand. "My moon," he said, his voice a practiced mix of frustration and forced intimacy. "I know what you're thinking. You think I've been paying too much attention to Fiona and ignoring you and Leo."

"But I swear, it's just an Alpha’s duty to protect her. She's a single Omega mother. I just don't want to see her struggle."

He took my hand and placed it over his heart.

"Just give me a little more time. I'll sort things out with Fiona and her son. I won't let you or Leo down again."

I stared at him, trying to remember the last time he’d looked at me with such sincerity.

Maybe at our mating ceremony, when we clasped hands before the Moon Goddess and he swore to protect me for life.

Or maybe the day Leo was born. He held our tiny pup in his arms, his hands trembling, and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

"Avril," he’d said. "I'll never let you or our heir suffer."

I thought about the past and was silent for a long time.

Finally, I decided to tell him the truth.

"Bruce, actually…"

Before, it was Leo and I chasing after him. When are you coming home? Can you spend time with your son? Do you even love us?Now, it was the other way around. But we weren't looking back.On holidays, I'd take Leo traveling. We saw the northern lights on the ice plains and surfed in the ocean. We lived well.Bruce always found out our itinerary and would follow us from a distance. He'd sit across the terminal at the airport, or a few tables away at breakfast. When Leo went skiing, Bruce would trail behind, terrified his son might fall. One time, Leo did fall. Bruce sprinted over. But Leo was already up, dusting the snow off himself."I don't need help, Alpha."Bruce's outstretched hand froze in mid-air. "Right," he said softly. "You're doing great, Leo."He learned not to interfere, following us like a ghost. But that didn't mean my heart was softening.Seven months after severing the bond, I started dating. The first time Bruce caught me was at a French restaurant. My date was a lawye

In all our years as mates, he had always been the proud, composed Alpha. This was the first time I'd ever seen him so broken and desperate. But I felt no sympathy. I just found it… pathetic."You're only remembering Leo now?"Bruce opened his mouth, but no words came out.I heard soft footsteps behind me.Leo was there, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Bruce kneeling outside the door, his expression unreadable.Bruce reached for him like a drowning man grabbing a lifeline."Leo. Daddy's here. Can you help me convince your mom? Please? I don't want to lose her."He thought Leo would soften. After all, Leo used to be his little shadow.Whenever he came home, Leo would run and hug his legs, chanting "Daddy, Daddy."But this time, Leo just took a small step back behind me.Then he said, calmly, "Alpha, you should go be with your other pup. Don't bother me and my mom anymore."Bruce froze, his hand suspended in mid-air."Leo, I'm your dad. How can you call me Alpha?"Leo looked a

Those four words were a knife straight to Bruce's heart. He stared at the screen, motionless.Fiona was still laughing."Oh, you didn't know? Bruce, you're pathetic. Your own Luna and heir have rejected you, and you're still here playing daddy to someone else's pup."Bruce suddenly turned and walked out."Where are you going?" Fiona shouted after him.He didn't look back. Her voice turned shrill. "Do you think she'll forgive you if you go after her now? She's already done with you!"Bruce faltered for a second, then walked faster.Furious, Fiona grabbed a water glass from the bedside table and threw it.It shattered at the doorway. At the same time, Tony began to convulse violently. His face turned blue, and he made a terrible gasping sound."Patient has laryngeal edema!" a nurse yelled. "Get a healer, now! We need to resuscitate!"Fiona's legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.Bruce drove straight to the airport, ordering his men to arrange a flight immediately. He had to get

Bruce shot to his feet.Even though he hated Fiona in that moment, the thought of a pup in danger sent him rushing out the door.Outside the emergency room, Fiona was pacing.Tony was covered in red hives. His face was swollen, his lips pale, and an IV was taped to the back of his hand.He kept scratching at his neck. A nurse had just given him an antidote.Bruce was about to push the door open when he heard Tony's weak voice from inside."Mommy, I ate the wolfsbane like you said.""Is Alpha coming to see me?"Bruce’s hand froze on the doorknob.Fiona's voice was low, but laced with a triumphant smile."He will.""Bruce is a total pushover. All you have to do is cry a little, act cute, and he’ll come running."Tony wheezed. "But it hurts.""Mommy, am I going to die?"Fiona's brow furrowed in annoyance."Don't be ridiculous. It's just a little poison. Toughen up. Remember last time, when Avril's son had a fever? I just said you were crying because you missed your 'daddy,' and Bruce came

Around eight that night, Bruce went home.As he opened the door, he clung to one last sliver of hope.Maybe Avril just took Leo to a friend's house.Maybe she's just really angry and isn't answering her phone.Maybe…The moment the door swung open, all his maybes shattered. The entryway was empty. Where Avril's and Leo's shoes used to be, there was only his own pair of boots. The living room was empty. The large wedding portrait was gone from the wall. The family mugs were gone from the coffee table. The photo of the three of them at the beach was gone.In the corner, Leo's favorite dinosaur toys, his building blocks, his picture books—all gone.Bruce stood in the doorway, as if his soul had been ripped from his body.He walked, step by step, into the bedroom. The closet was open. Not a single piece of Avril's clothing was left. Her vanity was wiped clean, not even her favorite moonflower perfume remained. He rushed into Leo's room. The small bed was neatly made, but his backpack and t
