Chapter 1

Author: Echo
The moment my son, Leo, said those words, both Bruce and I froze.

In the 28 days since I’d realized Bruce’s heart wasn’t with us, every time he abandoned me and Leo for Fiona, I made Leo call him "Alpha Bruce."

It was a reminder, to both of us, not to waste our tears on someone who wasn’t worth it.

But that’s not how Leo saw it.

He was only seven, at an age where a boy hero-worships his father.

Every time I told him to say "Alpha," he would hesitate before murmuring the word.

But today, he said it on his own.

It rolled off his tongue, smooth and final, as if he’d rehearsed it in his heart a thousand times.

Seeing us stunned, Leo took my hand. "Go on, Alpha," he said to Bruce. "You're busy."

Then he looked at me.

"Let's go, Mom."

He pulled me into the photo studio.

The family portrait had been Bruce’s idea, a way to make up for missing Leo’s birthday.

Leo had been looking forward to it for two weeks.

I followed him woodenly, my heart twisted with a bitter pang.

It all started with a receipt.

He’d taken Fiona to dinner and forgotten to take the receipt out of his pocket. It was from the Moonlight Restaurant, famous for its romantic atmosphere. A dinner for two.

I’d asked him to take me there for our last mating anniversary, to recapture the magic of when we first bonded.

Bruce had refused. "An Alpha's time shouldn't be wasted on pointless romance," he’d said.

A few days later, he took Fiona.

I found her post on her pack’s social feed.

[A romantic restaurant is meant for someone who appreciates romance.]

The picture was of her and Bruce, clinking glasses under the moonlight.

Fiona was his old flame, a supposedly fragile Omega with a pup.

That night, we had the worst fight of our lives.

I told him I was filing a petition with the Elders to sever our mate bond.

Bruce called me unreasonable.

He asked how I could be so cruel as to leave the future Alpha of the pack without a father.

He swore to the Moon Goddess that it was nothing more than an Alpha’s duty to protect the weaker members of the pack.

Seeing Leo’s face, pale with fear, I practically bit my tongue in half.

I knew if I dragged my son away from him, Leo would never forget his father.

But I also knew that one betrayal leads to a thousand more.

I wouldn’t let my son suffer for what he called "protection."

So I chose another way. I tricked Bruce into signing the dissolution papers.

When I gave the agreement to the Head Elder, he sighed. "There are 30 days until the next full moon, when the sacred grounds open," he reminded me. "If you change your mind within these 30 days, come back for this document. I'll act as if nothing happened, and I won't tell the Alpha."

I won't regret this, I promised myself.

So for the next 30 days, I did everything I could to help my son detach.

Today was day 28.

And Leo had called Bruce "Alpha" all by himself.

I felt my son’s body trembling slightly against mine, but there was no victory in it, only the feeling of a thousand icy needles piercing my heart.

We had already walked a few feet away when Bruce finally snapped out of it.

He took a few steps after us, about to ask what was wrong, but his phone rang again. It was Fiona’s delicate, tearful voice.

"Bruce, where are you? Tony won't stop crying. I can't calm him down."

Bruce stopped in his tracks. "Okay," he said into the phone. "I know. I'm on my way."

He sent me a quick text—We’ll talk later—and turned away without a second thought.

The roar of his truck's engine faded into the distance.

Leo stopped walking and buried his face in my shoulder, his tears soaking through my shirt.

"Mom," he whispered.

"Can we... not have a dad anymore?"

We lived well.Bruce always found out our itinerary and would follow us from a distance. He'd sit across the terminal at the airport, or a few tables away at breakfast. When Leo went skiing, Bruce would trail behind, terrified his son might fall. One time, Leo did fall. Bruce sprinted over. But Leo was already up, dusting the snow off himself."I don't need help, Alpha."Bruce's outstretched hand froze in mid-air. "Right," he said softly. "You're doing great, Leo."He learned not to interfere, following us like a ghost. But that didn't mean my heart was softening.Seven months after severing the bond, I started dating. The first time Bruce caught me was at a French restaurant. My date was a lawye

In all our years as mates, he had always been the proud, composed Alpha. This was the first time I'd ever seen him so broken and desperate. But I felt no sympathy. I just found it… pathetic."You're only remembering Leo now?"Bruce opened his mouth, but no words came out.I heard soft footsteps behind me.Leo was there, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Bruce kneeling outside the door, his expression unreadable.Bruce reached for him like a drowning man grabbing a lifeline."Leo. Daddy's here. Can you help me convince your mom? Please? I don't want to lose her."He thought Leo would soften. After all, Leo used to be his little shadow.Whenever he came home, Leo would run and hug his legs, chanting "Daddy, Daddy."But this time, Leo just took a small step back behind me.Then he said, calmly, "Alpha, you should go be with your other pup. Don't bother me and my mom anymore."Bruce froze, his hand suspended in mid-air."Leo, I'm your dad. How can you call me Alpha?"Leo looked a

Those four words were a knife straight to Bruce's heart. He stared at the screen, motionless.Fiona was still laughing."Oh, you didn't know? Bruce, you're pathetic. Your own Luna and heir have rejected you, and you're still here playing daddy to someone else's pup."Bruce suddenly turned and walked out."Where are you going?" Fiona shouted after him.He didn't look back. Her voice turned shrill. "Do you think she'll forgive you if you go after her now? She's already done with you!"Bruce faltered for a second, then walked faster.Furious, Fiona grabbed a water glass from the bedside table and threw it.It shattered at the doorway. At the same time, Tony began to convulse violently. His face turned blue, and he made a terrible gasping sound."Patient has laryngeal edema!" a nurse yelled. "Get a healer, now! We need to resuscitate!"Fiona's legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.Bruce drove straight to the airport, ordering his men to arrange a flight immediately. He had to get

Bruce shot to his feet.Even though he hated Fiona in that moment, the thought of a pup in danger sent him rushing out the door.Outside the emergency room, Fiona was pacing.Tony was covered in red hives. His face was swollen, his lips pale, and an IV was taped to the back of his hand.He kept scratching at his neck. A nurse had just given him an antidote.Bruce was about to push the door open when he heard Tony's weak voice from inside."Mommy, I ate the wolfsbane like you said.""Is Alpha coming to see me?"Bruce’s hand froze on the doorknob.Fiona's voice was low, but laced with a triumphant smile."He will.""Bruce is a total pushover. All you have to do is cry a little, act cute, and he’ll come running."Tony wheezed. "But it hurts.""Mommy, am I going to die?"Fiona's brow furrowed in annoyance."Don't be ridiculous. It's just a little poison. Toughen up. Remember last time, when Avril's son had a fever? I just said you were crying because you missed your 'daddy,' and Bruce came

Around eight that night, Bruce went home.As he opened the door, he clung to one last sliver of hope.Maybe Avril just took Leo to a friend's house.Maybe she's just really angry and isn't answering her phone.Maybe…The moment the door swung open, all his maybes shattered. The entryway was empty. Where Avril's and Leo's shoes used to be, there was only his own pair of boots. The living room was empty. The large wedding portrait was gone from the wall. The family mugs were gone from the coffee table. The photo of the three of them at the beach was gone.In the corner, Leo's favorite dinosaur toys, his building blocks, his picture books—all gone.Bruce stood in the doorway, as if his soul had been ripped from his body.He walked, step by step, into the bedroom. The closet was open. Not a single piece of Avril's clothing was left. Her vanity was wiped clean, not even her favorite moonflower perfume remained. He rushed into Leo's room. The small bed was neatly made, but his backpack and t
