Chapter 4

Author: Echo
I changed our flight to three o'clock that afternoon.

After confirming our passenger information, I began the final preparations for our departure.

At nine a.m., I made breakfast in that house for the last time.

The moonberry pie Bruce had bought last night was still in the kitchen.

Leo took it out and threw it in the trash.

The Head Elder came by one last time to ask if I was still certain about severing the bond.

"Yes," I answered without hesitation.

He said nothing more, just nodded and left.

As we were getting ready to leave for the airport, I saw a new post from Fiona.

[The Alpha’s talisman works wonders! Tony loves it. He says he wants to wear it where everyone can see.]

Beside me, Leo took out the small dagger Bruce had once given him. It used to be his favorite toy.

After seeing the post, he said nothing, but quietly removed the dagger from his luggage.

"Let's go, Mom."

At one p.m., after lunch, Leo and I took a taxi to the airport with all our bags.

It was two hours before our meeting time with Bruce.

Leo held my phone, silently looking through the photo album.

There was a picture from his first-month ceremony, with Bruce holding him up proudly, showing off his heir to the pack.

A photo of him at three, with Bruce helping him build a tower of blocks.

And a video from this year, before Fiona reappeared.

Bruce was standing behind him, patiently guiding his hands as he shot his very first arrow.

He watched them over and over. He didn't cry, but a heavy sadness filled the car.

He was too young to understand why the father who had loved him so much suddenly didn't anymore, and why he now had another pup.

But he was old enough to understand what I’d taught him: don't cling to what you've already lost.

I sat beside him and said nothing.

At two, we were about to go through security.

Bruce called.

"Avril, tell Leo I'm sorry. Tony fell out of a tree and hurt himself. I have to take him to the clinic."

"I don't know if I can make it by three. If you can't wait, just head home."

"Tell Leo I'm so sorry!"

He hung up so fast he didn't even hear the boarding announcement in the background.

"Let's go," I said, taking Leo's hand.

He nodded, selected all the photos and videos, and deleted them with a single tap.

At exactly three o'clock, our plane took off.

I put noise-canceling headphones on Leo and watched the blue sky and white clouds outside the window. I let out a long, slow breath.

Goodbye, Bruce.

At that same moment, Bruce, ignoring Fiona's tearful pleas, ran out of the clinic and sped toward the amusement park.

Before, it was Leo and I chasing after him. When are you coming home? Can you spend time with your son? Do you even love us?Now, it was the other way around. But we weren't looking back.On holidays, I'd take Leo traveling. We saw the northern lights on the ice plains and surfed in the ocean. We lived well.Bruce always found out our itinerary and would follow us from a distance. He'd sit across the terminal at the airport, or a few tables away at breakfast. When Leo went skiing, Bruce would trail behind, terrified his son might fall. One time, Leo did fall. Bruce sprinted over. But Leo was already up, dusting the snow off himself."I don't need help, Alpha."Bruce's outstretched hand froze in mid-air. "Right," he said softly. "You're doing great, Leo."He learned not to interfere, following us like a ghost. But that didn't mean my heart was softening.Seven months after severing the bond, I started dating. The first time Bruce caught me was at a French restaurant. My date was a lawye

In all our years as mates, he had always been the proud, composed Alpha. This was the first time I'd ever seen him so broken and desperate. But I felt no sympathy. I just found it… pathetic."You're only remembering Leo now?"Bruce opened his mouth, but no words came out.I heard soft footsteps behind me.Leo was there, clutching his little dinosaur. He looked at Bruce kneeling outside the door, his expression unreadable.Bruce reached for him like a drowning man grabbing a lifeline."Leo. Daddy's here. Can you help me convince your mom? Please? I don't want to lose her."He thought Leo would soften. After all, Leo used to be his little shadow.Whenever he came home, Leo would run and hug his legs, chanting "Daddy, Daddy."But this time, Leo just took a small step back behind me.Then he said, calmly, "Alpha, you should go be with your other pup. Don't bother me and my mom anymore."Bruce froze, his hand suspended in mid-air."Leo, I'm your dad. How can you call me Alpha?"Leo looked a

Those four words were a knife straight to Bruce's heart. He stared at the screen, motionless.Fiona was still laughing."Oh, you didn't know? Bruce, you're pathetic. Your own Luna and heir have rejected you, and you're still here playing daddy to someone else's pup."Bruce suddenly turned and walked out."Where are you going?" Fiona shouted after him.He didn't look back. Her voice turned shrill. "Do you think she'll forgive you if you go after her now? She's already done with you!"Bruce faltered for a second, then walked faster.Furious, Fiona grabbed a water glass from the bedside table and threw it.It shattered at the doorway. At the same time, Tony began to convulse violently. His face turned blue, and he made a terrible gasping sound."Patient has laryngeal edema!" a nurse yelled. "Get a healer, now! We need to resuscitate!"Fiona's legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.Bruce drove straight to the airport, ordering his men to arrange a flight immediately. He had to get

Bruce shot to his feet.Even though he hated Fiona in that moment, the thought of a pup in danger sent him rushing out the door.Outside the emergency room, Fiona was pacing.Tony was covered in red hives. His face was swollen, his lips pale, and an IV was taped to the back of his hand.He kept scratching at his neck. A nurse had just given him an antidote.Bruce was about to push the door open when he heard Tony's weak voice from inside."Mommy, I ate the wolfsbane like you said.""Is Alpha coming to see me?"Bruce’s hand froze on the doorknob.Fiona's voice was low, but laced with a triumphant smile."He will.""Bruce is a total pushover. All you have to do is cry a little, act cute, and he’ll come running."Tony wheezed. "But it hurts.""Mommy, am I going to die?"Fiona's brow furrowed in annoyance."Don't be ridiculous. It's just a little poison. Toughen up. Remember last time, when Avril's son had a fever? I just said you were crying because you missed your 'daddy,' and Bruce came

Around eight that night, Bruce went home.As he opened the door, he clung to one last sliver of hope.Maybe Avril just took Leo to a friend's house.Maybe she's just really angry and isn't answering her phone.Maybe…The moment the door swung open, all his maybes shattered. The entryway was empty. Where Avril's and Leo's shoes used to be, there was only his own pair of boots. The living room was empty. The large wedding portrait was gone from the wall. The family mugs were gone from the coffee table. The photo of the three of them at the beach was gone.In the corner, Leo's favorite dinosaur toys, his building blocks, his picture books—all gone.Bruce stood in the doorway, as if his soul had been ripped from his body.He walked, step by step, into the bedroom. The closet was open. Not a single piece of Avril's clothing was left. Her vanity was wiped clean, not even her favorite moonflower perfume remained. He rushed into Leo's room. The small bed was neatly made, but his backpack and t
