Chapter 1

Author: Brandy Branch
Carla Ramsey was holding our son Dominic Hatfield's jacket in her hand, the one that was made when he was six months old.

While we were back in our hometown visiting relatives, Carla heard from the elders in the family that if parents were willing to collect cloth pieces from many families as a traditional blessing and sew them into a jacket lining, it would bless Dominic with long life.

At the time, my hand injury hadn't healed yet, so I couldn't do any fine work.

When I lowered my eyes, they were filled with dejection.

"It doesn't matter. Even without this jacket, I'll still protect Dominic and ensure he lives a long life."

That night, Carla drove out in the snow and bought an entire carload of cigarettes, alcohol, and tea. Then she went door to door, knocking and paying New Year's calls.

She traded a whole carload of gifts for piece after piece of cloth from 100 families.

The dignified CEO of Ramsey Group sat just like that in a rural room under dim light, stitching the jacket thread by thread.

At that time, I still thought this relationship had room to turn around.

Carla pressed her lips together and silently put the jacket on Dominic.

She was different from before.

The Carla I first knew was a famously cold-hearted player in the business world.

After just one business trip to Whitaker Island, her assistant, Hugo Cain, brought back so many luxury watches for Carla's various boyfriends that three safes couldn't hold them all.

But now she knew that when making formula for Dominic, she first had to test the temperature on the back of her hand. And when dressing him, she would carefully curl up his little hands.

Even when Dominic had a mild fever and was crying, neither I nor the nanny, Elena Denton, noticed anything unusual. Yet, Carla could immediately stop an online meeting and drive Dominic to the hospital.

All of this was once beyond even my dreams and prayers. But now that they were within easy reach, I no longer wanted them.

After dressing Dominic, I immediately stepped back two paces to put half an arm's length between Carla and me.

She frowned slightly and asked in an extremely low voice, "Max Hatfield, how long do you intend to keep provoking me? Are we really going to spend the rest of our lives tormenting each other like this?"

I lowered my eyes and answered softly, "I never meant for us to torment each other."

Carla's brows drew tightly together. She couldn't understand how I, who once had been willing to hurt myself a thousand times over just to keep her, had suddenly become like this.

"Max, you're holding all that anger inside. Whatever you're unhappy about, you can take it all out on me. If you keep bottling it up like this, you'll make yourself sick."

I gently shook my head, my eyes puzzled.

"I'm not unhappy about anything or holding any anger inside. I was too willful before. From now on, I won't act out, and I definitely won't go after Fred Reilly and hurt him. You can rest assured."

Carla's eyes were bloodshot.

"Max, you didn't used to be like this! Are you still holding a grudge against me over what happened half a year ago?"

Grandma held my hand and tried to persuade me. "Carla's a big-shot boss. She's never touched a needle and thread in her life. But for you and Dominic, she went and learned to sew a jacket. You can't keep living in the past forever."I nodded, taking it in. But what I understood was something else entirely. At night, I felt the air turn cold. Carla was no longer beside me.I threw on a coat and went outside, where I heard her talking in a lowered voice as she stood in the yard.A man's voice came from the other end of the line. Though he kept his voice low, I could still tell it was Fred.I slowly retreated into the room, leaving Carla undisturbed.More than 20 minutes later, she crept back into the room without making a sound. Afraid her hands were cold, she warmed them before getting into bed and gently hugged me from behind. After coming back from my hometown, Carla had a slightly bigger smile on her face. She felt that after this trip, I was finally being nicer to her. She'd

As I passed by the study, I walked in and turned on the computer like I was possessed.Sure enough, an electronic copy of the divorce papers was still in the computer folder. After I printed a copy and organized it, I picked up Carla's fountain pen and signed my own name. When I returned to the bedroom, Carla sat obediently on the bed, waiting for me.She patted the spot beside her and said, "Come quickly. I paused the movie for you, so you don't have to worry about missing the plot." Once, while we were watching a movie together, I went to the bathroom and begged her to pause it and wait a few minutes for me. But when I came back, she had already finished watching it."Why didn't you wait for me?" I asked her aggrievedly."Why should I wait for you? My time is also precious," she replied with a cold expression. She was never willing to stop for me, nor had she ever shown me gentleness or care. And yet, I stubbornly loved her for so many years.I stood at the bedroom door loo

I calmly withdrew my gaze, noticing a flicker of guilt flash across Ruben's face."Max, you didn't see anything, did you?" he asked.I shook my head. "I was playing a game on my phone, so I didn't see anything. What did you see?""Nothing. I was just thinking it's been so long since we went shopping together. I'm really happy that we get to go on a shopping spree later. Today, I'm definitely going to pick out a handsome outfit for you."Ruben was true to his word. We really did buy a lot of things. My hair had gone too long without proper care, so it had grown a bit dry and unruly.Ruben took me to the studio he trusted most to get my hair done, generously pulling out his VIP card. Then, he took me to a cosmetics counter to buy men's skincare products. When the sales assistant helped me try on a primer, she saw the burn scar at the corner of my forehead."Sir, we recently got a new concealer with especially good coverage. Would you like to try it?"I looked at my face in the m

Carla immediately explained, "Max, it's not what it looks like. I've broken things off with him for good. I said I'd take good care of you and Dominic—""It's okay," I interrupted her urgent explanation. My expression was very calm, and there was no longer the stubborn anger of the past in my eyes. "I'm not angry, nor will I make a scene."Seeing me like this, Carla suddenly panicked. She hurried to me and reached out to grab my wrist, cupping my hand in hers. It was as if she were afraid that if she let go, I would vanish before her eyes."Max, what exactly is wrong with you? You have to believe me. There really was nothing just n—""I believe you." I let her hold my hand. The burn marks on the back of my hand were shocking, but my expression was calm.On the contrary, Carla looked like a madwoman. The burns on the back of my hand seemed to scorch her, and she suddenly withdrew her palm. The next instant, with her eyes rimmed red, she hugged me even tighter.I heard her voi

Dominic was temporarily taken home by Elena.By the time I was discharged from the hospital, he had already grown quite a bit. He fixed his big, round eyes on me, looking as if he hardly knew who I was."I must look terrible right now. I scared you, didn't I?" I held Dominic in my arms. His big eyes were bright as he stared up at me, but he wasn't frightened into crying.Carla helped me pack up my things, then had Dina make the dishes I liked."A new nursery's been set up on the second floor. Max, why don't you go have a look?"I carried Dominic upstairs. The new nursery no longer had any trace of Fred's previous design. Even the overall color scheme was the pastel purple I liked.Dominic liked his new bed very much. A rotating mobile toy for soothing children hung above it. He liked it a lot, but the craftsmanship was a little rough."Mrs. Hatfield made this herself. She was worried about Mr. Dominic coming into contact with the unhygienic stuff sold outside. She sat alone in

"I tore up the divorce papers. Please prepare another one," I said.Carla's hand trembled slightly as she held the spoon. The warm chicken soup spilled onto the bedsheet, and she hurriedly grabbed tissues to wipe it up. But even after wiping it dry, a mark still remained on the sheet."No need to wipe it. Call the nurse in a bit. They can help me change the bedsheet," I said.Because I had stayed in the fire for too long, my voice was a little hoarse.I wanted to find a mirror, but I still couldn't get out of bed for the time being. Still, my fingers found the bandage at my temple. I figured there'd be a small scar there. The cut on the web between my fingers had already been bandaged. It still hurt from time to time, and my hand had no strength."It's my fault. I didn't hold the spoon steadily," Carla said gently. She ladled another spoonful of chicken soup and held it to my lips. "Didn't you say before that you wanted to drink the chicken soup I made?"I got up early s
