Chapter 1

I pressed a hand to my chest and gasped for air. My lungs felt as though they were filled with icy wind, each breath burning with pain.

The sensation of dying in my first two lives still clung to my bones. The moldy stench of that mud-brick house, the rusty tang of the rented room, the shrill screech of brakes in the instant before the crash. The memories churned together until my temples throbbed.

I raised my eyes again and found myself staring at the familiar library study area.

A warm yellow desk lamp glowed nearby beside a towering stack of grad school study materials.

Then a hand with prominent knuckles gently placed a thermos printed with a little bear cub on the corner of my desk.

It was Bryce Jackson. He looked the same as always, gentle and refined. His white shirt was neatly buttoned at the collar, and his eyes held the same warm, familiar smile he had worn every time he handed me water in my first two lives.

My blood ran cold.

No. I would not make the same mistake again.

In my first life, I had let my guard down and accepted his confession. He had coaxed me into moving back to his family's home in the mountains. I spent the rest of my life trapped on a few acres of land and died of illness on a mud-brick bed before I turned thirty.

In my second life, I hid from him for a week.

The moment I returned to the study room, he knocked me unconscious and dragged me away. He kept me locked up for three years before I finally managed to escape, only to die a horrible death beneath the wheels of a car.

In this third life, I would not let him anywhere near me. Not even a little.

He leaned down, about to speak.

Heat rushed to my head. I whipped around and grabbed the arm of the guy sitting next to me.

He wore black headphones, and his fingers flew across his phone screen. Game sound effects leaked from his headphones in bursts of static, but he did not even lift his head.

I nearly shouted, "Boyfriend! Let's go grab something to eat!"

The instant the words left my mouth, the rustle of turning pages at the surrounding tables abruptly stopped.

The entire room fell silent for three long seconds.

My hand trembled around his arm. I stared at the back of his head and prayed like crazy.

His fingers paused.

He slowly pulled off his headphones and turned toward me.

He had handsome features, though his eyes still held a hazy, half-asleep look.

He glanced at me, then at my hand gripping his arm, and frowned. "What do you mean?"

My face instantly burned.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Bryce's gaze turn cold as he stared at our joined arms.

There was no turning back now.

I steeled myself and whispered quickly, "Do me a favor. I'll owe you one."

He raised an eyebrow and let out a quiet "Oh."

To my surprise, he did not expose me. He slipped his headphones back on, lowered his gaze, and resumed tapping at his screen. "Fine, fine, fine. Let me finish this team fight."

I let out half the breath I had been holding.

But when I looked up, I found students at several nearby tables staring our way, their eyes gleaming with curiosity.

Some covered their mouths and whispered. Others pulled out their phones and secretly began typing.

I knew it. This was bad.

The grad exam study room was not that big. News would spread faster than the wind.

At lunch, I sat through a meal in the cafeteria that felt like torture.

The gamer and I did not exchange another word. He kept his head down and played games the entire time, while I picked distractedly at my pasta.

When I returned to the study room that afternoon, I could practically feel everyone's eyes glued to me.

I headed toward my seat, only to stop short.

Bryce was still sitting across from me.

But the thermos that should have been on my desk was now clutched in his hand.

He looked up at me. His face betrayed no emotion, but his eyes were noticeably colder than they had been that morning.

The group chat went dead silent. Not a single emoji appeared after that.Three minutes later, Amanda posted from her main account: [Sorry, I misunderstood.]Then she immediately left the group. That same afternoon, she packed her things and moved to another dorm. She never spoke to me again.By then, word of her rumor-spreading had circulated throughout the class, and no one wanted anything to do with her anymore. I occasionally ran into her in the academic building after that, but she always lowered her head and went out of her way to avoid me.I did not feel any satisfaction. I just found the whole thing pointless. Some people's malice never needed a reason. Fighting against it only wasted your own time. After I moved in with Walter, my study efficiency actually improved. I got up at 7:00 a.m. every morning and returned by 10:00 p.m. every night, rotating between the same three places day after day. My days were simple but full.Every so often, I would glance over and see him

The two of them shut their mouths at once, lowered their heads, and shrank back."You're lying!" The old woman's eyes widened, and she lunged at me again. "My son told me himself that he spent so much money buying you things! You ungrateful girl! You got my son in trouble, and now you're not getting off easy either!""Whether I'm lying or not, you know better than anyone." Walter let out a cold laugh, pulled out his phone, and opened a recording. "This is a recording of your call with Bryce. You told him to hurry up and bring her back, hold the wedding party before the end of the year, and get her ID so she couldn't run away. Want me to play it for everyone here?"The old woman's wailing stopped instantly. She sat frozen on the ground for two seconds before starting up again. "You were eavesdropping on our calls! That's illegal!"Walter's expression remained flat. "This recording was obtained by the police through legal channels. Your son wasn't just planning to abduct someone him

The video showed everything with perfect clarity. Kalvin and the other two had deliberately blocked my path and surrounded me with taunts. When Bryce grabbed my wrist, my whole body was shaking. It was nothing close to some "couple's spat."At the end, he had also posted a recording of a phone call between Kalvin and a friend.Without a shred of shame, Kalvin said, "We just need to force her to back down. Once Bryce gets her locked in, let's see if she keeps acting all high and mighty."The moment the post went up, the comments flipped completely.[What the hell? This guy's a straight-up psycho. Going through her bag and photocopying her student ID? What was he planning to do with that?][So all three roommates were in on it? Ganging up to force a girl into submission?][Whoever called it a honey trap better come back and apologize. Does your face hurt from that slap?][The more you think about it, the creepier it gets. Photocopying a student ID? Was he planning to forge documen

Amanda's face instantly flushed red. She opened her mouth. "How was I supposed to know the truth? Besides, he always acted so decent. Who could have guessed he was that kind of person?"She paused, then muttered, "And anyway, he didn't actually do anything to you. Going straight to the police and getting him arrested... isn't that a bit much? We're all classmates here. We're bound to run into each other...""A bit much?" I let out a cold laugh. "Wait until he drags me into the mountains and locks me up. Wait until I'm trapped on those few acres of land for the rest of my life. Then come tell me if it's too much."Amanda had nothing to say to that. Her face shifted between pale and flushed. Finally, she dropped into her chair and huffed. "Fine, you're right. You're clearly too clever for the rest of us. We ordinary people just can't understand your moves."I didn't bother responding.Different paths, no common ground. I used to think Amanda was just a little gossipy and a little t

I stood frozen, the chill of the thermos still lingering on my fingertips. My heart hammered for a long moment before it finally began to settle.Walter reached out and patted my back, his voice low. "It's over now, Whitney."The murmurs around us surged like a tide. The same people who had pointed at me and judged me moments ago now stared with completely different expressions. Shock, embarrassment, and more than a little discomfort filled their faces.I glanced to the side. The two girls in matching pink hoodies fumbled to stuff their books into their bags. They kept their heads bowed and didn't dare look my way. They were the same girls who had called me a snake and accused me of being ungrateful just days ago, loud enough for half the study room to hear.I looked away. I had no intention of settling the score with them. But just because I didn't want trouble didn't mean trouble would leave me alone. The two of them shuffled toward the door with their bags clutched tightly in

The screen displayed a still from the security camera. In high definition, Bryce stood at my desk in the study room and twisted open the lid of my thermos. He held a small packet of white powder between his fingers and poured its contents into the cup.The angle was clear. His actions were unmistakable.Everyone erupted at once."What the hell? What is that?""He spilled it? Bryce actually put something in her drink?""Oh my God, and here I thought he was devoted...""That's terrifying! He brought her water every day, and he was lacing it?"The murmurs quickly swelled into a roar. The color drained from Bryce's face.He shot to his feet and pointed at the screen, his voice cracking. "Those are vitamins! Just plain vitamin powder! I was worried all the exam prep was wearing her down, so I wanted to help her recover!""Worried?" I let out a cold laugh and stared at him. "If you're worried about someone, do you sneak something into their drink when they're not looking? Do you d
