Chapter 3

Author: Full Luck Mode
I spun around. Two girls at the next table were talking, both dressed in matching pink hoodies.

When they saw me looking, neither backed down. Instead, one of them rolled her eyes and raised her voice. "What are you looking at? Am I wrong? Some people string a guy along and then humiliate him in public. She's a snake in disguise. She takes all his kindness, then turns around and runs to another man. Unbelievable."

Each word landed like a slap across my face.

I gripped my pen until my knuckles turned white. I wanted to snap back, but when I opened my mouth, all I felt was exhaustion.

Arguing with them would only prove that I was "lashing out in shame." That was exactly the effect Bryce wanted. He did not have to do anything. All he had to do was play the wounded, devoted victim, and everyone else would happily nail me to the cross for him.

I took a deep breath, gathered my things, and moved to the farthest corner of the study room.

The moment I reached my new seat, I saw it: the same little bear thermos, sitting on the corner of the desk. As if it had eyes of its own, it had found my new spot with perfect precision.

Someone walked past, spotted the thermos, and immediately started whispering, "She hid all the way over here, and he still found her. He's really persistent. If it were me, I would've been touched to tears already. How can she be so cold-hearted?"

I shoved the thermos aside. In this life, I would not touch it, not even once.

By Wednesday, things had gotten much worse.

At lunch, my phone would not stop buzzing. I opened the grad exam group chat and found hundreds of unread messages.

I had barely scrolled through two screens before my head started pounding.

Someone had posted a photo with the caption: [Girl accepts water from her senior while openly keeping a backup boyfriend on the side. Real player.]

The photo had been taken in secret from a sharp angle. It captured the exact moment I reached out to take the thermos. Sunlight fell across my face, and somehow, I actually looked like I was smiling.

The comments exploded.

[Knew she wasn't a good person.]

[Poor Bryce, running into a girl like this.]

[The grad exam circle is so small. Isn't she embarrassed?]

[Someone should tell her to switch study rooms. It's uncomfortable just looking at her.]

I stared at the screen, then laughed.

So this was what it felt like to have everyone turn against you.

I had done nothing wrong. All I wanted was to stay away from a man who was going to get me killed. Yet in everyone else's eyes, I had become the worst kind of woman.

I went to the cafeteria to buy breakfast. The moment I reached the entrance, I saw it: a long white banner hanging from the parasol tree beside the door.

The words had been scrawled in crooked black marker, but they were impossible to miss: [I like you, Whitney Lynch!]

Heat rushed to my head. I stormed into the study room and slammed my hand down on Bryce's desk.

"Bryce! Did you have someone put up that banner outside?" My voice shook with days of pent-up anger and hurt.

The few people still in the study room lifted their heads and looked over.

Bryce slowly closed his book and raised his eyes to me. A trace of hurt flickered in them.

When he spoke, his voice was gentle and measured, almost as if he were giving a lecture, yet loud enough for everyone around us to hear. "I only wanted to be good to you. It's fine if you don't want to accept that."

He paused and fixed his gaze on me, a faint sense of grievance in his expression. "But calling another man your boyfriend that day... That really did hurt me."

As soon as he finished, the study room fell silent. Everyone stared at me with the kind of look reserved for a criminal, as if I had committed some unforgivable offense and Bryce was the innocent victim.

I opened my mouth, but suddenly, the whole situation felt absurd. He was the one who had stalked me, harassed me, and backed me into a corner with nowhere to run. Yet somehow, I was the one in the wrong.

"Cut the act!" My voice trembled with anger. "You know exactly what you are..."

"What am I?" He met my gaze, his eyes calm. "I like you, so I wanted to be good to you. Whitney, I never forced you to do anything. Bringing you water was my choice. You don't owe me anything for it."

The group chat went dead silent. Not a single emoji appeared after that.Three minutes later, Amanda posted from her main account: [Sorry, I misunderstood.]Then she immediately left the group. That same afternoon, she packed her things and moved to another dorm. She never spoke to me again.By then, word of her rumor-spreading had circulated throughout the class, and no one wanted anything to do with her anymore. I occasionally ran into her in the academic building after that, but she always lowered her head and went out of her way to avoid me.I did not feel any satisfaction. I just found the whole thing pointless. Some people's malice never needed a reason. Fighting against it only wasted your own time. After I moved in with Walter, my study efficiency actually improved. I got up at 7:00 a.m. every morning and returned by 10:00 p.m. every night, rotating between the same three places day after day. My days were simple but full.Every so often, I would glance over and see him

The two of them shut their mouths at once, lowered their heads, and shrank back."You're lying!" The old woman's eyes widened, and she lunged at me again. "My son told me himself that he spent so much money buying you things! You ungrateful girl! You got my son in trouble, and now you're not getting off easy either!""Whether I'm lying or not, you know better than anyone." Walter let out a cold laugh, pulled out his phone, and opened a recording. "This is a recording of your call with Bryce. You told him to hurry up and bring her back, hold the wedding party before the end of the year, and get her ID so she couldn't run away. Want me to play it for everyone here?"The old woman's wailing stopped instantly. She sat frozen on the ground for two seconds before starting up again. "You were eavesdropping on our calls! That's illegal!"Walter's expression remained flat. "This recording was obtained by the police through legal channels. Your son wasn't just planning to abduct someone him

The video showed everything with perfect clarity. Kalvin and the other two had deliberately blocked my path and surrounded me with taunts. When Bryce grabbed my wrist, my whole body was shaking. It was nothing close to some "couple's spat."At the end, he had also posted a recording of a phone call between Kalvin and a friend.Without a shred of shame, Kalvin said, "We just need to force her to back down. Once Bryce gets her locked in, let's see if she keeps acting all high and mighty."The moment the post went up, the comments flipped completely.[What the hell? This guy's a straight-up psycho. Going through her bag and photocopying her student ID? What was he planning to do with that?][So all three roommates were in on it? Ganging up to force a girl into submission?][Whoever called it a honey trap better come back and apologize. Does your face hurt from that slap?][The more you think about it, the creepier it gets. Photocopying a student ID? Was he planning to forge documen

Amanda's face instantly flushed red. She opened her mouth. "How was I supposed to know the truth? Besides, he always acted so decent. Who could have guessed he was that kind of person?"She paused, then muttered, "And anyway, he didn't actually do anything to you. Going straight to the police and getting him arrested... isn't that a bit much? We're all classmates here. We're bound to run into each other...""A bit much?" I let out a cold laugh. "Wait until he drags me into the mountains and locks me up. Wait until I'm trapped on those few acres of land for the rest of my life. Then come tell me if it's too much."Amanda had nothing to say to that. Her face shifted between pale and flushed. Finally, she dropped into her chair and huffed. "Fine, you're right. You're clearly too clever for the rest of us. We ordinary people just can't understand your moves."I didn't bother responding.Different paths, no common ground. I used to think Amanda was just a little gossipy and a little t

I stood frozen, the chill of the thermos still lingering on my fingertips. My heart hammered for a long moment before it finally began to settle.Walter reached out and patted my back, his voice low. "It's over now, Whitney."The murmurs around us surged like a tide. The same people who had pointed at me and judged me moments ago now stared with completely different expressions. Shock, embarrassment, and more than a little discomfort filled their faces.I glanced to the side. The two girls in matching pink hoodies fumbled to stuff their books into their bags. They kept their heads bowed and didn't dare look my way. They were the same girls who had called me a snake and accused me of being ungrateful just days ago, loud enough for half the study room to hear.I looked away. I had no intention of settling the score with them. But just because I didn't want trouble didn't mean trouble would leave me alone. The two of them shuffled toward the door with their bags clutched tightly in

The screen displayed a still from the security camera. In high definition, Bryce stood at my desk in the study room and twisted open the lid of my thermos. He held a small packet of white powder between his fingers and poured its contents into the cup.The angle was clear. His actions were unmistakable.Everyone erupted at once."What the hell? What is that?""He spilled it? Bryce actually put something in her drink?""Oh my God, and here I thought he was devoted...""That's terrifying! He brought her water every day, and he was lacing it?"The murmurs quickly swelled into a roar. The color drained from Bryce's face.He shot to his feet and pointed at the screen, his voice cracking. "Those are vitamins! Just plain vitamin powder! I was worried all the exam prep was wearing her down, so I wanted to help her recover!""Worried?" I let out a cold laugh and stared at him. "If you're worried about someone, do you sneak something into their drink when they're not looking? Do you d
