Chapter 4

Author: Full Luck Mode
The more reasonable Bryce sounded, the more unreasonable I looked.

I stood there like a joke.

Words piled up in my throat, but not one made it out.

I turned off my phone and hid in the dorm. At some point, I drifted off without even realizing it.

I dreamed of my first two lives, both of which began with that familiar mountain road and the bus jolting over the rough terrain.

Bryce held my hand and smiled. "My place is just ahead. My parents will love you."

But when we arrived, I learned the truth. His father had died long ago, and all that awaited us was a leaking mud house and five acres of thin, worn-out farmland.

"Life in the mountains is peaceful," he said. "It's perfect for building a good life together."

He took my ID and phone and put them away. "The signal is bad up here. I'll keep these safe for you."

I fought him, cried, and ran, but everyone in the village helped him. Every time I escaped, the villagers caught me and dragged me back to his house.

He never hit me. Instead, he would sit on the edge of the bed, watch me for a while, then sigh and ask, "Why can't you just understand?"

Slowly, I stopped trying to run. The days ground on like a millstone, one after another, as my life became an endless cycle of farming, feeding pigs, and raising the two children I bore, a son and a daughter. I never returned to the city, nor did I ever see the outside world again.

Before I died, I looked out the window at the mountains that stretched layer upon layer into the distance, surrounding me like a cage I could never escape.

I jolted awake, drenched in cold sweat. The blanket was soaked through. The dorm room was pitch black, with only moonlight slipping through the window. I gasped for air as my heart pounded mercilessly.

No. I couldn't wait any longer. If I did, I would only repeat the same mistake.

He had already started closing in, step by step. Next time, I didn't know if I could hold out at all.

I had to fight back.

On Saturday morning, I dragged myself to the cafeteria with dark circles under my eyes. I hadn't made it two steps inside before I ran straight into Bryce.

He sat with his three roommates. The four of them occupied an entire table and blocked my path to the corner.

When they saw me coming, the roommate with dyed blond hair raised his voice, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, look who it is. You're here. Sit, sit. We were just talking about you."

The bespectacled roommate joined in. "Whitney sure thinks highly of herself. We've been waiting on you forever."

I ignored them and kept my head down as I tried to walk around. But all four stood at once, trays in hand, and hurried to the corner table before I could reach it. They sat down and blocked me again.

The blond-haired one patted the seat beside him. "Sit down. What are you hiding for? We don't bite."

I froze, my knuckles white around my tray.

"Move." My voice shook.

"Move?" The blond-haired one sneered. "Why should we? You own this cafeteria or something? We just want to eat here. Is that a problem?"

Bryce sat in the middle and said nothing. He simply watched me with a faint trace of amusement, as though he were enjoying a show.

I understood then.

They had done this on purpose. They had cornered me, pushed me, and forced me to give Bryce an answer in public. They wanted me to bow my head and admit I was wrong.

"I have nothing to do with him." I forced the words through clenched teeth. "Stop calling me."

The bespectacled one set down his spoon and leaned forward. "Nothing to do with him? Nothing to do with him, but you've been taking his water for half a month? Nothing to do with him, but he saves you a seat every single day? Nothing to do with him, but he asked the cafeteria ladies to give you extra food?"

His voice carried across the cafeteria, and people at the surrounding tables turned to look.

The blond-haired one picked up where he left off and tapped his spoon against the edge of his bowl. "I think you've just been stringing our guy Bryce along and playing hard to get. Am I wrong?"

The sharp, grating sound scraped at my nerves.

"Do you like him or not? If you don't, then say it clearly in front of the whole cafeteria. Don't string him along and waste his time when he could find someone better."

"Yeah, just give us a straight answer!"

The three of them hurled accusations at me one after another, as if they were interrogating a criminal.

More and more eyes turned toward me, and the whispers grew louder. I felt stripped bare in front of everyone, exposed for them to stare at and pick apart.

Humiliation surged through me like a tide and tightened around my chest.

I didn't want to deal with them anymore. I turned to leave.

Someone grabbed my wrist. The grip was light and warm, almost soothing.

It was Bryce.

He stood and looked at me, his voice gentle. "Don't go. Let's talk this through properly."

But the instant his fingers touched my wrist, memories of my first two lives exploded through my mind. The touch and warmth were exactly the same, and fear seized my heart like a snake coiling around it.

"Don't touch me!" I screamed and wrenched my hand free with too much force.

Soup sloshed out of my tray and spilled across the floor.

The entire cafeteria fell silent. Every eye turned toward me, filled with shock, contempt, and the thrill of watching a good show.

Bryce froze, his hand still suspended in the air. His face held exactly the right measure of shock and hurt.

"I only wanted you to sit down and talk this through properly. I meant you no harm." His voice was low and wounded, as if he were the one who had been frightened.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect. In everyone's eyes, I was the one throwing a tantrum, the one making a scene, the one too foolish to recognize kindness.

My phone buzzed with a message. I opened it.

Then I laughed. "Bryce, since you say you meant no harm, why don't you take a look at this?"

I turned my phone around and held up the screen for everyone to see.

The group chat went dead silent. Not a single emoji appeared after that.Three minutes later, Amanda posted from her main account: [Sorry, I misunderstood.]Then she immediately left the group. That same afternoon, she packed her things and moved to another dorm. She never spoke to me again.By then, word of her rumor-spreading had circulated throughout the class, and no one wanted anything to do with her anymore. I occasionally ran into her in the academic building after that, but she always lowered her head and went out of her way to avoid me.I did not feel any satisfaction. I just found the whole thing pointless. Some people's malice never needed a reason. Fighting against it only wasted your own time. After I moved in with Walter, my study efficiency actually improved. I got up at 7:00 a.m. every morning and returned by 10:00 p.m. every night, rotating between the same three places day after day. My days were simple but full.Every so often, I would glance over and see him

The two of them shut their mouths at once, lowered their heads, and shrank back."You're lying!" The old woman's eyes widened, and she lunged at me again. "My son told me himself that he spent so much money buying you things! You ungrateful girl! You got my son in trouble, and now you're not getting off easy either!""Whether I'm lying or not, you know better than anyone." Walter let out a cold laugh, pulled out his phone, and opened a recording. "This is a recording of your call with Bryce. You told him to hurry up and bring her back, hold the wedding party before the end of the year, and get her ID so she couldn't run away. Want me to play it for everyone here?"The old woman's wailing stopped instantly. She sat frozen on the ground for two seconds before starting up again. "You were eavesdropping on our calls! That's illegal!"Walter's expression remained flat. "This recording was obtained by the police through legal channels. Your son wasn't just planning to abduct someone him

The video showed everything with perfect clarity. Kalvin and the other two had deliberately blocked my path and surrounded me with taunts. When Bryce grabbed my wrist, my whole body was shaking. It was nothing close to some "couple's spat."At the end, he had also posted a recording of a phone call between Kalvin and a friend.Without a shred of shame, Kalvin said, "We just need to force her to back down. Once Bryce gets her locked in, let's see if she keeps acting all high and mighty."The moment the post went up, the comments flipped completely.[What the hell? This guy's a straight-up psycho. Going through her bag and photocopying her student ID? What was he planning to do with that?][So all three roommates were in on it? Ganging up to force a girl into submission?][Whoever called it a honey trap better come back and apologize. Does your face hurt from that slap?][The more you think about it, the creepier it gets. Photocopying a student ID? Was he planning to forge documen

Amanda's face instantly flushed red. She opened her mouth. "How was I supposed to know the truth? Besides, he always acted so decent. Who could have guessed he was that kind of person?"She paused, then muttered, "And anyway, he didn't actually do anything to you. Going straight to the police and getting him arrested... isn't that a bit much? We're all classmates here. We're bound to run into each other...""A bit much?" I let out a cold laugh. "Wait until he drags me into the mountains and locks me up. Wait until I'm trapped on those few acres of land for the rest of my life. Then come tell me if it's too much."Amanda had nothing to say to that. Her face shifted between pale and flushed. Finally, she dropped into her chair and huffed. "Fine, you're right. You're clearly too clever for the rest of us. We ordinary people just can't understand your moves."I didn't bother responding.Different paths, no common ground. I used to think Amanda was just a little gossipy and a little t

I stood frozen, the chill of the thermos still lingering on my fingertips. My heart hammered for a long moment before it finally began to settle.Walter reached out and patted my back, his voice low. "It's over now, Whitney."The murmurs around us surged like a tide. The same people who had pointed at me and judged me moments ago now stared with completely different expressions. Shock, embarrassment, and more than a little discomfort filled their faces.I glanced to the side. The two girls in matching pink hoodies fumbled to stuff their books into their bags. They kept their heads bowed and didn't dare look my way. They were the same girls who had called me a snake and accused me of being ungrateful just days ago, loud enough for half the study room to hear.I looked away. I had no intention of settling the score with them. But just because I didn't want trouble didn't mean trouble would leave me alone. The two of them shuffled toward the door with their bags clutched tightly in

The screen displayed a still from the security camera. In high definition, Bryce stood at my desk in the study room and twisted open the lid of my thermos. He held a small packet of white powder between his fingers and poured its contents into the cup.The angle was clear. His actions were unmistakable.Everyone erupted at once."What the hell? What is that?""He spilled it? Bryce actually put something in her drink?""Oh my God, and here I thought he was devoted...""That's terrifying! He brought her water every day, and he was lacing it?"The murmurs quickly swelled into a roar. The color drained from Bryce's face.He shot to his feet and pointed at the screen, his voice cracking. "Those are vitamins! Just plain vitamin powder! I was worried all the exam prep was wearing her down, so I wanted to help her recover!""Worried?" I let out a cold laugh and stared at him. "If you're worried about someone, do you sneak something into their drink when they're not looking? Do you d
