I thought of what me and Mum talked about in the car.

I couldn’t help but wonder if that’s why he acted like a sex addict sometimes.

Ryder didn’t just flirt, he seduced. He pulled people in, made them want him. But he never let anyone have him, not really. It was all surface-level charm, a game he played flawlessly.

And one I am failing woefully at it seems.

I sighed, pulling my shirt over my head as I stepped into the shower. The hot water hit my skin instantly, rolling down my shoulders, loosening the tension that had been sitting in my body since the bridal shop.

I tilted my head back, letting the heat soak into my muscles, but my mind wouldn’t shut up.

Ryder.

Ryder with his cocky smirk. His rough voice. The way he had leaned in at the boutique, whispering filthy things in my ear like he owned me.

His messages. Left boob from the right? I chuckled as I touched my boobs.

But my fingers grazing my nipples made me shiver.

My breath hitched.

I reached for the showerhead.

Ryder and I stood on the balcony staring at the evening stars. His face still had bruises, and my ankle was still bruised that I needed a walking stick to get around. The silence between us was heavy with everything we couldn't say inside that suffocating dining room."I can't do it," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can't sit there and pretend to be happy about their wedding when it's destroying us."I leaned against the marble railing, careful not to put too much weight on my bad ankle. "It's not about us, Ryder. It's about them.""Isn't it?" He turned to face me, and the pain in his eyes was raw. "Everything we have, everything we could have it's all tainted now. Because of them. Because of this whole fucked up situation."The cool night air carried the scent of jasmine from the garden below. In the distance, the city lights twinkled like fallen stars, but all I could focus on was the way Ryder's jaw clenched when he spoke about his father."You hate him," I sa

The police had barely finished taking my statement when I heard the familiar click of designer heels echoing through the hallway. My stomach dropped."Evelyn! Oh my God, Evelyn!"Mom burst through the apartment door like a force of nature, her perfectly styled blonde hair slightly mussed, her Chanel suit wrinkled from what must have been a frantic rush across the city. Alexander was right behind her, his face grim and tired.Ryder's arms immediately dropped from around me. The shift was so sudden, so jarring, that I felt cold air rush in where his warmth had been."What in God's name were you doing here?" Mom demanded, her eyes darting between Ryder and me with the kind of suspicion that made my blood freeze. "At Ryder's apartment? Alone?""I was…" I started, but she cut me off."Do you have any idea what this looks like? What will people think?" Her voice pitched higher with each word. "My daughter, unchaperoned, in her stepbrother's apartment in the middle of the night?""Mom, I was

Evie’s POVI pulled his pillow closer to my face, breathing in the scent of his cologne mixed with his hairspray, something that was just him. The apartment felt too quiet without him here, too big. I'd never noticed how the city lights cast long shadows across his walls before.I sighed wistfully, closing my eyes slightly. I love you, Evie. His words kept playing in my head like a song I couldn't turn off. The way he'd said it with such…desperation, like the words had been clawing at his throat for months. And I'd just sat there. Frozen. Like some pathetic deer caught in headlights.Until I started to ramble like a fool. Do I love Ryder or is he just for sex?I shook my head. Not for sex, he…he made me feel seen. Just like mum. We have never been seen or lived for who we are, we always had to adjust to be someone else just to be accepted, but mum is herself with Alexander, apart from jealousy and spite over the fact that I can't be with Ryder because of it. I…also understood her.

Ryder’s POV I pulled on my jeans and grabbed my keys from the counter, still feeling the warmth of Evie's lips on mine. The way she'd looked at me, half panicked, half trusting, it made my chest tight in the best way possible."Be right back," I called over my shoulder, but she was already curled up in my bed, wearing my shirt like armor. The drive to the 24-hour pharmacy took longer than I expected. Traffic was light, but my mind kept circling back to her face when she realized what we'd done. The panic. The way she'd paced around my bedroom like a caged animal.I couldn't blame her. Hell, I was an idiot for not thinking about it either. But when she was underneath me, when she was looking at me like I was the only thing that mattered, logic had a way of disappearing. The pharmacy was one of those bright, sterile places that made everything feel clinical and weird. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting everything in harsh white. I found the aisle I needed and grabbed the box,

We laid there together, wrapped in each other’s nakedness. My fingers traced the scars on his back, slow and absentminded. Some were old—barely raised, like whispers under the skin. Others were newer, angry and pink. My thumb paused on one near his shoulder blade.“This one,” I said softly, “from football?”He hummed. “Riley pushed me down the stairs when we were twelve.”I blinked. “Wait, seriously?”“Yeah.” He chuckled, low and muffled in the pillow. “I told our dad I fell trying to reach a comic on the shelf. Didn’t want her to get in trouble.”“You’re kidding.”“Not even a little.”I let my palm flatten against his skin, warm and steady. “You were a really loyal kid.”“Stupidly loyal, but I cared for Riley, she is my twin after all,” he muttered.I giggled. “True, sometimes I forget that.”He turned his head, that lopsided grin breaking across his face. “That’s the first time you’ve laughed all day.”“It was a stupid story.”“You laughed anyway.”I rolled onto my back, staring up

I kissed him like I wanted to consume him—because I did. His mouth opened under mine, his tongue feeling mine, my pussy clenched from the feeling of the hiss. My hands slid under his shirt, fingers dragging over the muscle and heat of his skin. He sucked in a breath through his teeth as my nails raked down his back.“Fuck,” he muttered into my mouth, hands gripping the edge of the counter on either side of me, like he needed to hold something or he’d lose control.I leaned forward, lips trailing to his jaw, then his throat, tasting the salt there. He tilted his head back, just slightly, and I bit—lightly—at the tendon that flexed under his skin. His breath hitched. My hand dropped, slipping beneath the waistband of his jeans, fingers brushing over the ridge of his dick through his boxers. God, he was hard. Painfully so.“Evie…Jesus—”“Less talking,” I whispered against his throat. He let out a strangled sound, almost a laugh, almost a moan. Then his hands were back on me, pushing
