Roxy's POV

“Heloooo… earth to Roxy.”

I blinked and looked up from my wine glass to see that Daniel was watching me from across the table, one eyebrow raised, the corner of his mouth pulled into an amused smile.

I choked out awkwardly, “I’m sorry, I got a bit lost in my head there.”

“Yeah, I can see that,” he muttered, setting his fork down. “It’s the third time tonight, and you’ve barely touched your food. Is there something wrong?”

I glanced down at my plate and realized he was right. I’d bare

Cain's POV“You’ve been in a mood for two days.”I didn’t look up from the contract I wasn’t actually reading. “I’m fine.”Marcus dropped into the chair across from my desk anyway, uninvited, propping one leg over his knee like he had nowhere else to be.I kept my eyes on the same paragraph that I was struggling to read for the fourth time, yet to no avail.“You haven’t said more than ten words at breakfast since Tuesday,” he said.“The Singapore deal is complicated,” I responded.“That’s what Dad thinks.” I finally looked up, and Marcus smiled. “But I don’t think it’s the Singapore deal.”I picked up my pen and returned to work. “It is.”“Sure.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “But Roxy hasn’t said ten words either.”My pen stopped, and Marcus noticed of course he did.“You two used to at least argue,” he continued. “Now you barely look at each other. It’s weird.”I set my pen down. “Roxy and I are step-siblings, not conjoined twins,” I let out. “The fact that we

Is there something wrong?”I glanced down at my plate and realized he was right. I’d barely touched the food.A nervous laugh escaped me. “Long week.”It wasn’t a lie. It just wasn’t the whole truth. My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass. Two nights. That was all it had been since I kissed Cain. Two nights since I had shoved him away, slapped him across the face, screamed at him to leave my room, and watched something change in his expression before he walked out.I could still remember the sound of my palm against his cheek and his hand at my waist. Worse, I could still

Cain's POV“Did you tell Mrs. Odette to stop putting sugar in the guest wing pantry?”I looked up from the stove. Roxy stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms folded tight across her chest, her hair still damp, dark strands clinging to her neck. It was one in the morning, and she looked wide awake or just furious enough that it had chased tiredness away.“I asked her to swap it for the oat milk you actually drink instead of the sugar.” I turned off the burner and faced her. “Seems practical since you hate sugar anyway.”“That’s not your call to make.”“It’s just coffee, Roxy.” I sighed. “It’s not like I’m choosing a husband for you or anything.”“It’s my coffee,” she gritted, walking deeper into the kitchen. “First, it’s coffee. Then you cut in on a dance so I have to stand there and pretend you’re not doing exactly what you’re doing. If care isn’t taken, you’d start showing up at my office too.”I arched an eyebrow. “And what exactly am I doing?”“Trying to buy my forgiveness with

Cain's POVI stepped back into the ballroom just in time to see Roxy place her hand in Daniel Anderson’s, and I stopped.I knew the man, and I knew his family, too. The Andersons had been wealthy for generations, with interests in shipping, real estate, and enough investments scattered across the country to make most people uncomfortable asking how much they were worth. He was exactly the kind of man our parents would consider suitable hell, I wouldn’t blame her for being interested.Daniel smiled at Roxy and led her onto the dance floor, his hand settling on her waist. My teeth grinded together as I watched them, the jealousy burning inside my chest. I had no right to be jealous I hated that I felt it, especially since Roxy had made it very clear in the bathroom a few minutes ago.She wasn’t wrong. I had no claim on her, no right to feel a single thing watching another man make her laugh. But knowing that didn’t make it any easier to stand there and watch it happen. My hands curled a

Roxy's POV The words hit so sharply that I actually stumbled backward, my fingers curling around my dress. Caroline’s smile widened. “It must be difficult.” “Caroline.” Cain’s voice came from behind her, carrying a silent warning. She turned toward him, and then her expression changed as her eyes moved between us. “Wait… if your parents are married…” She looked at Cain, then at me. “That makes her your stepsister?” Her laughter grew louder. “Cain, I cannot believe Betty Roxy is your stepsister.” “Jesus Christ, Caroline. Shut the fuck up.” His voice cut through the noise around us, so sharp that a couple more heads turned toward us. The room began to tilt. The laughter around me disappeared, replaced by another sound six years ago, two hundred people, his voice, their laughter. I blinked rapidly. No, not here. Please, not here. “I need to use the restroom.” I turned before either of them could answer. “Roxy!” Cain called after me, but I didn’t look back. I pushed through the

Roxy’s POV“Roxy, stop making that face. You’re embarrassing me.”My mother tightened her grip around my arm and continued pulling me through the crowded ballroom before I could protest again.“I’m not making it difficult,” I muttered. “I’m just trying to tell you that I’m not interested.”“And I told you that you don’t know whether you’re interested because you haven’t even spoken to him.”“Exactly. Which is why I don’t understand why you’re dragging me over there.”She ignored me, smoothing down the side of my dress as though that would somehow make me more willing to participate in whatever matchmaking scheme she had cooked up.“He’s from a very good family,” she murmured. “Very respectable. And rich.”I rolled my eyes. “Of course he is.”“Very rich,” she repeated, as if the extra emphasis would suddenly make me fall in love with the man before seeing him.I sighed. “I’m not looking for a husband, Mom.”“You’re twenty-four, Roxy. You’re not looking for a husband. You’re only gettin
