Daniel’s POV

“Roxy and I are taking the Ferris wheel. Just the two of us.”

I made sure everyone heard me. After spending most of the evening fighting for a few minutes alone with Roxy, I wasn’t about to let anyone tag along.

Ivy barely looked up before grabbing Marcus by the arm.

“Come on. I need funnel cake.”

Marcus glanced at us, then at Cain, before he let his sister drag him away.

Celeste shook her head. “I’m not getting on that thing. Anything that spins makes me sick.”

That left Cain.

Cain's POV"I need to tell you something, and I need you to let me get through all of it before you say anything.”Roxy stood in the middle of my room, her arms wrapped around herself. She glanced towards the window, then lowered her eyes to the carpet, avoiding my gaze.I put the book I’d been reading aside.“Okay. I’m listening,” I added.“My name isn’t really Hale. Before that, it was Bennett. And before Bennett, there was Calloway. I was too young to remember it, but that was my father’s surname.”I frowned slightly. “Calloway?”“Yes. My real father’s surname. His name was Daniel Calloway.”“But how?”“He was an engineer. Years ago, he went into business with another man. They built something together, but it eventually fell apart. My father lost his share, his reputation, everything he’d worked for. My mother wouldn’t tell me why, so this morning I found out another way.”She took a breath.“There’s a box at the back of her wardrobe. I wasn’t even looking for it. I found document

Roxy's POV"Mom, I’m borrowing your cream blazer! Everything I own is in the wash, and I have the Hartley meeting at ten!"I called toward the bathroom as I opened her wardrobe. The shower was running, and it took a moment for her to answer.“Take what you need.”That was probably the longest conversation we’d had in four days.Since our argument, we’d kept our conversations to the bare minimum. A greeting in the morning, an occasional question about dinner, and nothing more. Neither of us had brought up what she’d told me about my father. I wasn’t ready to let it go, and she hadn’t made another attempt to explain.I wasn’t ready to pretend everything was fine.I found the section where she kept her blazers and began moving the hangers aside, but the cream one wasn’t there.I checked the other side, pushing aside a few garment bags. My hand struck something hard behind the dresses. I crouched to see what it was. There was a box on the floor, tucked behind the dresses. It was old, with

Roxy's POV"There’s someone here for you. He’s been sitting in our lobby for twenty minutes, pretending to read a manuscript upside down."Elewon stood beside my desk, looking far too pleased with herself.I slowly lifted my eyes from the pages in front of me. “Who?”She tilted her head. “Roxy…”I sighed and pushed my chair back. “Fine. I’ll go.”I followed Elewon’s directions to the lobby, expecting to find someone waiting for me. She hadn’t said who it was, and I hadn’t thought to ask. Then I saw Cain sitting in one of the lobby chairs with a stack of papers in his hand. He looked so serious that I almost believed he was reading them, until I noticed the pages were upside down.I stopped in my tracks. “What are you doing here?” I demanded. “You can’t be here.”“I know.”I folded my arms, waiting for an explanation. He set the papers on the side table and straightened his jacket. A couple of junior editors glanced our way before quickly returning to their screens—not that they were f

Cain’s POV“Roxy, open the door.”I knocked again, harder this time. Still nothing.Six messages, three missed calls, and not a single reply from her. I’d been standing outside her bedroom for nearly ten minutes, and she hadn’t even bothered to tell me to go away.Roxy could ignore me when she was angry, but she usually made sure I knew exactly why. She would argue, insult me, or remind me of every reason she couldn’t stand me.Sometimes, I even preferred those arguments to this at least then, she was still talking to me.This silence was different.“Roxy, I know you’re in there.”I pressed my ear against the door, listening for any sign of movement, but there was none. No footsteps, no movement, not even the sound of her phone ringing. I stepped back and ran a hand through my hair. What the hell was going on?We’d argued about Daniel at the amusement park, but that wasn’t unusual anymore. We’d been at each other’s throats over him for weeks. Roxy had barely spoken on the drive home,

Roxy’s POV“Tell me about my father.”My mother stopped fastening her earring. For a moment, she didn’t move. Then she lowered her hand and looked at me through the mirror. “Where is this coming from?”I’d spent nearly ten minutes outside her bedroom, rehearsing how I would ask about my father without starting a fight. But the moment I opened my mouth, all that preparation went out the window.“I’m asking about my father, Mom.”“I heard you.” She turned back to her jewelry box. “I just don’t understand why you’re asking me this now.”“Because I want to know.”“Roxy, sweetheart, we’ve talked about this.”“No, we haven’t.” I stepped into the room and closed the door. “You’ve told me he died when I was young. That’s all you’ve ever told me.”She picked up another earring, but her fingers fumbled with the clasp. “That’s because there’s nothing more you need to know about him.”“That’s the problem, Mom. You keep deciding what I need to know.”My mother rarely lost her composure. Even durin

His eyes moved to Roxy, then back to me. “No. I’m good down here.”“Sure?”“Not a fan of heights.”I almost laughed. After the way he’d spent the entire evening following us around, I hadn’t expected him to give up so easily.“Your loss.”I took Roxy’s hand and led her toward the line before he could change his mind. We joined the queue behind a group of teenagers arguing over which ride to try next. Roxy held my hand, but she kept glancing
