It had been two days, and I still couldn't stop thinking about that night. I was still lost in my thoughts when Mia's voice suddenly broke through them. "Ri-ri… pick up your phone." I blinked and looked down at my phone, finally noticing it had been vibrating beside me. The moment I saw the caller ID, I sighed and leaned back. "It's Mom," I muttered. "She probably wants to remind me about her marriage again. This is her second marriage in a year, can you imagine? I don't know why she can't just stop. She keeps saying she's looking for the right one. Last time, she said he was the best. Now this one is going to be the best too." I rolled my eyes, unable to keep the irritation from my voice. “Now she wants me to move to Dallas, but I won't be moving!” Mia stared at me for a second, then shook her head with an amused smile, but I barely noticed because my thoughts had already wandered back to the masked man. I didn't even realize I was smiling until Mia caught me. "You're thinking about that night again, aren't you?" I immediately stopped smiling and looked away, pretending I hadn't heard her. What was I supposed to say? That I couldn't stop wondering who he was? That part of me wished I could find him even though I didn't have a name, a face, or anything useful to go on? I pressed my lips together and kept quiet, hoping Mia would let it go, but before she could say anything else, her attention shifted behind me. "Look, he's coming." I turned and my heart immediately gave that familiar little jump when I saw Chase running toward us. He looked unfairly good, his hair slightly tousled, his hockey jersey hanging perfectly on his broad frame. He reached us, laughing, then casually reached out and touched my hair like he always did, and despite everything, a smile slipped onto my face before I could stop it. "I'm going to miss you so much," he said. My smile disappeared. I stared at him, confused by the sudden heaviness in his voice. "What do you mean by that?" His expression softened. "I'll be moving to Dallas this weekend." Dallas? This weekend? My chest tightened as all the things I'd wanted to tell him suddenly felt even more impossible. "I'll miss you pookie," he continued with a small smile. “I wish things with Tina had worked out the other night, but she suddenly had something important come up, so I ended up going to a masked club instead.” My stomach dropped. He continued talking, completely unaware of the way my expression had changed. "I met a virgin there... she was so tight," he said casually. "And honestly, I enjoyed myself." My eyes widened, and suddenly I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing in my ears. A cold shiver ran down my spine as my mind desperately tried to connect the words he was saying to the memories I'd been trying to piece together for two days. My fingers curled against my palms. Then Chase lifted his shirt. "And look what I got that night. A new tattoo." Everything inside me stopped. My eyes locked onto the dark tattoo sprawled across the left side of his chest, and for several seconds, I couldn't even breathe properly. The black serpent curled around the dagger, the tiny crown sitting at the base of the blade. I knew that tattoo. It was exactly the same as the stranger's. "Do you think it’s nice?” Chase asked, lifting his shirt a little higher so I could see it better. I forced a laugh, but it sounded strange even to my own ears. "Of course it's nice," I said. Chase shrugged, dropping his shirt back down. "It's kind of a family thing, actually. We've all got it, one way or another. Been meaning to get mine for a while — that night just felt like the right time." My gaze remained fixed on the spot where the tattoo had been. A family thing. Meaning it wasn't just his. Meaning anyone in that family could be walking around with the exact same ink. Oh God. Heat rushed through me, and I suddenly realized I was sweating. "Why are you sweating?" Chase asked, his eyebrows drawing together as he stepped closer. He reached up and touched my face, his fingers brushing my cheek. The simple gesture made my heart pound even harder. I swallowed and tried to act normal, but my mind was already somewhere else, desperately replaying every broken piece of that night. Then Chase smiled. "And one more thing. I want you to come with me to Dallas. I want you to finally meet my dad. You've never met him, and I'd love to meet your mom too since you never let me meet her. So… would you?" I barely processed the question. My thoughts were spinning too fast, and before I could answer, Chase gently cupped my face, forcing my attention back to him. "Would you?" "Yes," I stammered. His smile widened immediately. "Settled, then. I'd love it if you'd move to Dallas too, pookie." He gave me one last grin and ran off, leaving me standing there completely stunned. I stared after Chase, then looked back at her. "That was the tattoo." Her eyes widened. "What?" "Do you think it's him? The man from that night? The one I've been looking for?" I bit my lower lip, suddenly realizing that Dallas might hold the answer to everything. My heart skipped again. "I think I'd need to move to Dallas."AveryPiper gasped the moment she saw Chase, immediately pulling away from the man, clutching the bedsheet tightly around herself as she scrambled to cover up.Her eyes were wide with panic. "Chase, it's not what you think," she rushed out, her voice shaking.I almost laughed at the words because what else could she possibly say when we had literally caught her red handed?"It's not what he thinks?" I shot back, my anger spilling over before I could stop it. "We just caught you doing exactly what you've been doing. You are in a relationship and hooking up with someone else." "I wasn't talking to you, so just keep quiet," she snapped."Just stop, both of you!" Chase suddenly shouted, rubbing a hand over his face and shook his head. "I just need space right now.""Babes…" Piper called, but he turned and walked away."You spied on me, right?" Piper demanded, glaring at me angrily."You were the one who cheated," I shot back. She gave a bitter laugh and looked me up and down. "If you re
AveryAfter the kiss, I couldn’t even look Zane in the eyes. My whole body felt like it had forgotten how to move normally, and the heat rushing into my face was so intense I was sure everyone could see it. I dropped my gaze, suddenly painfully aware of the crowd, the music, the phones still in people’s hands, and the fact that I had just kissed my stepbrother in front of everyone. My lips still tingled, my heart was pounding, and my mind kept replaying the last few seconds over and over again. Then someone laughed from the crowd. “That was so hot!” a girl said, and I immediately felt even more embarrassed. I lowered my head, wishing the floor would open up and swallow me whole, but then Piper’s voice cut through the noise, sharp enough to make my stomach twist. “Ooh, she’s moved to Zane now?” The words hit me harder than they should have, and suddenly all the heat in my face felt like anger as much as embarrassment. I couldn’t stand there another second.“What was that?” Abby ask
Avery “Now tell me,” she said, turning toward me with a curious smile. “Did you tell him the invitation was from me?” I shook my head. “You didn’t?” Abby’s eyebrows lifted, she dragged a hand through her hair with a frustrated sigh. “Oh God, why? It would’ve been easier now.” She studied my face for a moment before asking, “Who’s he to you again?” I hesitated for half a second, then answered, “He’s my stepbrother.” Abby’s expression changed instantly. She laughed, then let out a relieved sigh. “Thank God. I was starting to think maybe you liked him or something. It’s really nice that he’s your stepbrother because that makes it easier for me. I really want us to be friends.” She smiled at me so openly that I couldn’t help smiling back. “What?” I asked, still trying to understand where that had come from. “I mean it. I want to be your friend.” I gave a small laugh and nodded. “Sure.” Abby suddenly threw her arms around me in a tight hug. “Thanks!” “So you’l
AveryI swallowed hard as Zane came closer, the familiar scent of his cologne reaching me."Welcome home, brother," Chase said cheerfully, stepping forward to give him a quick high five, while I stood frozen, trying desperately to look anywhere except at Zane."Hey," Zane said, his eyes briefly finding mine."Hey," I managed, forcing my face into something I hoped looked normal instead of the panic I could feel taking over. There was no way. He was staying here? In this house? With me?"You guys need to be on your best behavior," Mom said, drawing my attention away from him as she looked between me and Brandon. "We practically begged Zane to stay here while we're gone, okay?""There's food in the house and everything you need, and we'll keep sending money if you need anything. If there's any issue, call us." Mom glanced at the time and hurried toward the stairs with my stepdad. "We need to go now, or we'll miss our flight."They disappeared to grab their bags, then came back down with
AveryAs soon as I got into my room, I closed the door behind me and fell onto my bed, still holding the hockey ticket in my hand. A ridiculous smile spread across my face as I stared at it. I couldn't stop myself from lifting it to my lips and kissing it once before laughing at my own behavior."I can't believe this," I whispered, pressing the ticket against my chest.I rolled onto my stomach, looked at the shopping bags scattered across my bed, then reached for my phone. There was no way I was keeping this from Mia.She picked up after a few rings. "Well?" she asked immediately. "You sound happy.""I am," I said, failing to hide my excitement. "You won't believe what happened."I told her everything. She listened until I finished, then let out a loud laugh. "Wow, that's such progress. So Zane really helped you with your whole makeover and everything?""Yes, he did." I glanced at the clothes beside me. "He's the reason Chase noticed me. I could feel something today, Mia. I really thi
Avery"This is embarrassing," I said, pulling away slightly and quickly wiping the tears from my eyes with the back of my hand. "I didn't... I'm sorry for crying. I just..."The words tangled in my throat. My cheeks burned, and I kept my eyes lowered."It's fine," Zane said quietly. "It's okay to let things out."I nodded, still avoiding his eyes. Then I noticed the blood. My eyes widened. "Oh my God, Zane, you're bleeding badly." I reached for him immediately. "We need to take you to the hospital.""I'm fine.""No, you're not." I caught his wrist and pulled his hand closer. "Look at this. You're bleeding.""I said I'm fine.""And I said you're not." I frowned at him. "If you don't want to go to the hospital, fine, but at least let me take care of it. And stop fighting people with your bare hands."Before he could argue, I opened my bag and pulled out the little first-aid box I carried around. Zane looked at it, then at me, amused."What?" I asked."Nothing."A faint smile tugged at t
