Roxy

I didn’t sleep, not really. Every time I closed my eyes, the memory played again: the violence of his thrusts, my mother’s moans, Dorian’s eyes finding mine through the gap in the door.

He caught me.

I didn’t need him to say it out loud. The only question was how long he’d been standing there before I noticed.

This isn’t who I am. The thought circled without going anywhere. What kind of person does what I did last night?

A knock cut through it. “Miss? Can I come in?”

“Yes.” I sat up straight against the headboard, clearing my throat.

Mary came in, two younger maids trailing behind her. They bowed in unison. “Good morning, young miss.”

I still wasn’t used to that. “Good morning,” I managed, forcing something like a smile.

Mary studied me a beat too long. “Young miss, was the bed uncomfortable?”

“No. Why?”

“Your eyes,” she said gently. “You have dark circles.”

“Oh. That...” Words failed me. “It’s nothing. Just... a restless night.”

“If you say so, young miss,” Mary said, approaching the edge of the bed. “Allow me to assist you with your bath.”

“I can manage on my own, thank you,” I said, already stepping off the bed before she could argue. “Please.”

“Very well. Call if you need anything.”

The door shut behind them, and I let the breath I’d been holding go. In the mirror, I looked like someone had taken a week out of me overnight, smudged shadows under my eyes, my skin washed out.

I hated what I saw there, and I hated even more what had caused it. If I hadn’t gotten thirsty. If I hadn’t walked down that hallway.

I showered fast, pulled on one of the plain dresses I’d brought from the apartment, and covered the worst of the damage with makeup before I could talk myself out of leaving the room at all.

Every step down that hallway toward breakfast felt like walking toward something I couldn’t take back. What if he had already told her?

Dorian’s laugh reached me before I did, low and easy, drifting out of the dining room like nothing in this house had changed overnight.

“Good morning, Roxy,” my mother said, glowing in a way that made my stomach turn.

“Good morning, Mom.” I looked toward the head of the table and made myself say it. “Dad.”

“Good morning,” Dorian said, calm and unbothered. “Honey.”

I sat, picked up my fork, and started eating faster than the food deserved. If I could just get through this, get to the door—

“Why are you eating like that?” My mother’s brows drew together. “Roxy?”

“I have to get to school. I’m late.”

“Late?” Dorian’s voice cut cleanly through the room, and I looked up despite myself.

“Yes, Dad,” I lied, forcing a tight, fake smile onto my face.

“I don’t think you are,” he responded smoothly, offering me a warm, fatherly smile.

He hadn’t said a word about last night. I’d spent the whole morning bracing to be exposed, and instead I got this, nothing. Silence.

He turned his wine glass slowly in his hand, his eyes staying on mine, steady and unreadable. Somehow, they pulled me straight back to that crack in the door.

I looked down at my lap before he could see what that did to me.

“Mom.” The words came out before I’d planned them. “I’m moving out today.”

Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth. “What? Why?”

“I need to focus on my exams, I need—”

“You need nothing of the sort.” Her tone left no room. “This is your home now. You’ll stay and study here.”

“I can arrange a private tutor,” Dorian offered, easy as anything. “There’s no reason to leave.”

“I am talking to my mother!”

It came out louder than I meant, loud enough that the room went completely still.

My mother’s face changed. “Roxy. How dare you speak to your father that way.”

“He isn’t my dad.”

I said it before I could stop myself, and some small, reckless part of me almost wanted them to throw me out for it, because staying under this roof with him felt more dangerous than anything waiting for me outside it.

My mother stood so fast her chair scraped the floor.

The slap landed before I saw it coming, sharp enough to turn my head with it.

I pressed a hand to my cheek, the sting spreading under my palm, my eyes stinging with it too.

“You hit me,” I said, and my voice came out smaller than I wanted it to.

Roxy I forced a sweet smile back at her. She thought she was the only one who could act. If she could lie to my face without blinking, so could I. “Let’s go down now,” she said excitedly. “Everyone is waiting for you.” She held my hand down the grand staircase. My eyes found Evander, and something in my chest lifted. He looked good in his black suit, hair styled, and I still remembered the scent on him. “Evander.” I slipped my hand free of my mother’s. “You look amazing.” “You look breathtaking, Roxy.” “Can we leave now?” Dorian’s voice cut in. I hadn’t noticed him standing there. I got in the car, and Evander slid in beside me. I expected Dorian to say something, but he didn’t, though his look said plenty. He was hard to read most days, but ever since Mary told me how he’d treated his son, I’d been trying harder to understand him, if only to protect Evander from whatever came next. Our driver, David, pulled onto the main road. I knew he reported everything back to Dorian, so

Roxy“Roxy,” Dorian called. I slowly turned around to face him.“Dad.” I forced a polite smile. I hated being in the same room as this man.“Why are you in here?”I hadn’t expected him to question me like this. “I came to check on Evander.”“Why? I heard you found him first.”“Is there something wrong with checking on my own brother?”He went quiet, his dark eyes locked on me, like he was looking straight through me.“You’re a grown woman,” he said softly. “You shouldn’t be in his room alone.”I held his gaze. Everything Mary and Evander had told me was true. He was pushing away anyone who cared about his son.He was using me as a weapon against his own son. He was a sinister man, and he and my mother were truly a match made in hell.“Are you implying something inappropriate might happen between us?”“Don’t misunderstand me.” He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “Why would I think that?”“Maybe you’re trying to keep me away from him.”For half a second, he looked caught off gu

Roxy No matter what I said, Evander would never believe me. Even a fool could see what my mother and Dorian were doing to him. And my mother. She had shocked me more than anyone ever had. Whatever trust I’d had left in her was gone now. I was done hoping for anything from her. I needed to talk to Evander. Not just the shares. I just wanted to tell him I was sorry, that none of this had been my idea, that I didn’t want to be the reason his whole world had turned on him. I wiped my face, opened my door, and went straight to his room. I took a breath before knocking. The door was already open a crack. I pushed it and went in. “Evander, are you in here?” No answer. I stepped further inside and stopped. He was on the bed, asleep, but something was wrong with how he looked. I went to him fast. “Evander, can you hear me?” I put my hand on his forehead. He was burning up. “Shit!” I stood and ran out of his room. “Mary!” I shouted as loud as I could. “Where are you?” The house was

Roxy“What are you two doing?”Dorian’s voice cut through the room, calm and level, and I scrambled backward so fast my head spun.“Dad, I can explain—” The words were out before I could stop them. I clapped a hand over my own mouth.I’d been seconds from kissing my stepbrother in his father’s house, and my first instinct was still to confess it to the man standing in the doorway.Evander stood up calmly, tapping my shoulder as if nothing had happened. “What is there to explain, Roxy?”My pulse hammered in my throat. He couldn’t possibly be about to bring up our history now, in front of him.“Will someone tell me what’s going on in here?” Dorian’s eyes moved between my face and Evander’s blank one. For a split second, something dark moved behind them, not anger exactly, something colder and more interested than that.I braced myself for being thrown out. Getting thrown out in disgrace wasn’t how I had planned to leave this house.“Dad, relax.” Evander stepped between us. “I’m helping

Roxy Ever since that night, Evander’s behavior had changed. “Good morning, Roxy.” He said brightly as I stepped into the dining room. “How are you doing today?” My guard went up on instinct. This was the same man who’d spat venom at me on the stairs weeks ago, cold enough to frighten me. People didn’t cool off that fast, not for any reason. I wasn’t going to be naïve twice. “Good morning.” I took my seat across from him, done running from whatever game this house wanted to play with me. “Brother.” “It’s so wonderful to see you two getting along,” my mother said, sitting beside him. “Morning, Mom.” He gave her a warm, easy smile. That smile unsettled me more than his cruelty had. This was still the man who had promised to destroy us both. Smiling at the woman he planned to ruin made me uneasy. I didn’t want to think too much about it. “Good morning, son.” My mother squeezed his hand, the same maternal touch she used on me. “You’re all here.” Dorian took his seat at the head o

Evander Two years of silence, and the first thing my father said to me on the phone was that he was getting married again. I hadn’t even gotten past hello before he was telling me about her—the woman, the wedding, all of it already decided, as if my opinion had never been part of the equation. My mother was still out there, still waiting for the man he used to be, the man who had stopped existing the day he threw me out for standing up for her. He’d never once apologized for that. I doubt the word was in him. Everyone on the outside thought Dorian Sinclair doted on his son. The magazine profiles, the photos at galas, his hand on my shoulder whenever a camera caught us together, all of it looked like affection if you didn’t know better. I knew. Only I knew what I actually was to him: an asset, groomed to run the empire once he got too old to enjoy it himself. He even banished me from home because I’d stood in his study and demanded to know why he hated my mother. I wanted answer
