Roxy

“You hit me, Mom.” I kept my hand pressed to my cheek, staring at her.

“I—” She stepped back. “I didn’t mean to do that.”

I didn’t know whether to scream or break down right there on the floor. If only she knew the real reason I wanted to leave this house.

Dorian got up from his seat and walked over to her, taking her trembling hand in his.

“Calm down, honey.” He kissed her knuckles without taking his eyes off me. “She isn’t a child anymore. She’s an adult.”

“An adult?” My mother’s voice cracked. “She’s twenty-three, Dorian. I won’t let her leave me. If she leaves this house, it’ll only be for class.”

“I understand, sweetheart.” His voice stayed soft. “Maybe you should ask her why she wants to move out in the first place.”

The room went quiet.

He was daring me to say it. He wanted me to tell my mother what I had watched him do to her through that gap in the door.

“Roxy.” My mother’s voice softened, and I could see the guilt in her eyes. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“But you did.”

She nodded. “I hit you because you were being disrespectful.”

“I told the truth. My dad is dead.”

Her hand went up again, but Dorian caught her wrist before she could hit me.

“Give her time, Clara. Everything is new to her.”

“She called you Dad yesterday!”

“I know.” He pulled her against his chest and ran a hand through her hair. “Even so, we have to give her time.”

“What changed?” she whispered against his chest, her shoulders shaking. “Everything was fine yesterday, and this morning... Dorian, I can’t let her leave me. What am I supposed to do without her?”

Tears ran down her face, and my chest tightened as I watched her.

“I’m doing all of this for her,” she said. “Why can’t she understand that?”

“She will,” he murmured, stroking her hair. “Don’t do this to yourself.”

I stood there and watched the whole performance. She hadn’t asked me once why I had stopped calling him Dad. Not once.

“I’m leaving for school,” I said, turning before either of them could answer.

I grabbed my bag from my room and came back down the long hallway.

Dorian was waiting by the archway with a glass of wine in one hand. His eyes found me the moment I came around the corner.

“Roxy.” His voice dropped low. “Why the sudden rush to move out?”

“Why?” I asked, using the word to avoid answering him.

He walked slowly toward me and stopped close behind me. I could feel him there before he spoke again.

“Yesterday everything was fine. Today, you suddenly want to leave?”

He said it as if he hadn’t locked eyes with me in the dark less than twelve hours ago.

“Nothing changed,” I said, keeping my back straight. “I need to focus on my exams.”

“Is that right?”

He stepped in front of me, blocking my way.

His eyes moved down my dress slowly, and there was nothing fatherly about the way he looked at me.

“Yes.” I forced myself to keep a straight face.

“Leaving will break your mother’s heart.”

“I’ll hurt her more if I stay.” The words came out sharper than I meant them to. If he wanted to play games, I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.

“You aren’t moving out.” His voice became quiet, which was worse than if he had shouted. “And you won’t be traveling back and forth on your own either.”

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“I am your father now.”

“You are not.”

“David.” He raised his voice slightly.

A man in a neat uniform appeared from the side hallway and bowed his head.

“Sir.”

“Roxy, this is David. Your personal driver.” Dorian turned to him. “David, this is the young miss of the house.”

“Young miss.” David bowed again. “At your service.”

“I don’t need a driver.”

“Of course you do, sweetheart.” Dorian gave me a warm smile, but I didn’t believe it. “David, stay with her at the university until her lectures end.”

“Yes, sir.”

I stood between them and finally understood what this was.

Not protection.

A cage, with the door already closing.

Roxy I forced a sweet smile back at her. She thought she was the only one who could act. If she could lie to my face without blinking, so could I. “Let’s go down now,” she said excitedly. “Everyone is waiting for you.” She held my hand down the grand staircase. My eyes found Evander, and something in my chest lifted. He looked good in his black suit, hair styled, and I still remembered the scent on him. “Evander.” I slipped my hand free of my mother’s. “You look amazing.” “You look breathtaking, Roxy.” “Can we leave now?” Dorian’s voice cut in. I hadn’t noticed him standing there. I got in the car, and Evander slid in beside me. I expected Dorian to say something, but he didn’t, though his look said plenty. He was hard to read most days, but ever since Mary told me how he’d treated his son, I’d been trying harder to understand him, if only to protect Evander from whatever came next. Our driver, David, pulled onto the main road. I knew he reported everything back to Dorian, so

Roxy“Roxy,” Dorian called. I slowly turned around to face him.“Dad.” I forced a polite smile. I hated being in the same room as this man.“Why are you in here?”I hadn’t expected him to question me like this. “I came to check on Evander.”“Why? I heard you found him first.”“Is there something wrong with checking on my own brother?”He went quiet, his dark eyes locked on me, like he was looking straight through me.“You’re a grown woman,” he said softly. “You shouldn’t be in his room alone.”I held his gaze. Everything Mary and Evander had told me was true. He was pushing away anyone who cared about his son.He was using me as a weapon against his own son. He was a sinister man, and he and my mother were truly a match made in hell.“Are you implying something inappropriate might happen between us?”“Don’t misunderstand me.” He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “Why would I think that?”“Maybe you’re trying to keep me away from him.”For half a second, he looked caught off gu

Roxy No matter what I said, Evander would never believe me. Even a fool could see what my mother and Dorian were doing to him. And my mother. She had shocked me more than anyone ever had. Whatever trust I’d had left in her was gone now. I was done hoping for anything from her. I needed to talk to Evander. Not just the shares. I just wanted to tell him I was sorry, that none of this had been my idea, that I didn’t want to be the reason his whole world had turned on him. I wiped my face, opened my door, and went straight to his room. I took a breath before knocking. The door was already open a crack. I pushed it and went in. “Evander, are you in here?” No answer. I stepped further inside and stopped. He was on the bed, asleep, but something was wrong with how he looked. I went to him fast. “Evander, can you hear me?” I put my hand on his forehead. He was burning up. “Shit!” I stood and ran out of his room. “Mary!” I shouted as loud as I could. “Where are you?” The house was

Roxy“What are you two doing?”Dorian’s voice cut through the room, calm and level, and I scrambled backward so fast my head spun.“Dad, I can explain—” The words were out before I could stop them. I clapped a hand over my own mouth.I’d been seconds from kissing my stepbrother in his father’s house, and my first instinct was still to confess it to the man standing in the doorway.Evander stood up calmly, tapping my shoulder as if nothing had happened. “What is there to explain, Roxy?”My pulse hammered in my throat. He couldn’t possibly be about to bring up our history now, in front of him.“Will someone tell me what’s going on in here?” Dorian’s eyes moved between my face and Evander’s blank one. For a split second, something dark moved behind them, not anger exactly, something colder and more interested than that.I braced myself for being thrown out. Getting thrown out in disgrace wasn’t how I had planned to leave this house.“Dad, relax.” Evander stepped between us. “I’m helping

Roxy Ever since that night, Evander’s behavior had changed. “Good morning, Roxy.” He said brightly as I stepped into the dining room. “How are you doing today?” My guard went up on instinct. This was the same man who’d spat venom at me on the stairs weeks ago, cold enough to frighten me. People didn’t cool off that fast, not for any reason. I wasn’t going to be naïve twice. “Good morning.” I took my seat across from him, done running from whatever game this house wanted to play with me. “Brother.” “It’s so wonderful to see you two getting along,” my mother said, sitting beside him. “Morning, Mom.” He gave her a warm, easy smile. That smile unsettled me more than his cruelty had. This was still the man who had promised to destroy us both. Smiling at the woman he planned to ruin made me uneasy. I didn’t want to think too much about it. “Good morning, son.” My mother squeezed his hand, the same maternal touch she used on me. “You’re all here.” Dorian took his seat at the head o

  • My Stepfather’s Forbidden Desire   14

Evander Two years of silence, and the first thing my father said to me on the phone was that he was getting married again. I hadn’t even gotten past hello before he was telling me about her—the woman, the wedding, all of it already decided, as if my opinion had never been part of the equation. My mother was still out there, still waiting for the man he used to be, the man who had stopped existing the day he threw me out for standing up for her. He’d never once apologized for that. I doubt the word was in him. Everyone on the outside thought Dorian Sinclair doted on his son. The magazine profiles, the photos at galas, his hand on my shoulder whenever a camera caught us together, all of it looked like affection if you didn’t know better. I knew. Only I knew what I actually was to him: an asset, groomed to run the empire once he got too old to enjoy it himself. He even banished me from home because I’d stood in his study and demanded to know why he hated my mother. I wanted answer
