Chapter 1

The pouring rain soaked me to the bone.

The feeling of suffocation grew worse as the air was slowly forced from my lungs. My vision went dark.

The system's warning was sharp and piercing.

"New target selected successfully. Current health: 1%."

"Establish physical contact with the new target immediately, or you will be erased!"

I stared at Chloe Rivera in the distance.

She was picking up plastic bottles along the emergency shoulder of the highway.

Everyone at school knew she was a poor student. She was also the "villain" Samantha Bailey kept talking about.

But I couldn't worry about any of that anymore. I quickly crawled toward her and let muddy water fill my mouth.

Chloe was clearly scared by the crazy person who suddenly came rushing out of the rain.

She cautiously stepped back and held her woven bag tightly. "Don't come any closer! There are cameras here. Don't even think about setting me up. I don't have any money!"

Chloe turned and tried to run.

I used the last bit of strength I had to lunge forward and grab her ankle.

Her pant leg was cold and wet, covered in mud, but it was the only thing that could save my life.

"Physical contact established. Health recovering..."

As air finally rushed back into my lungs, I started coughing hard.

I pulled Chloe off balance, and she almost fell into a puddle of mud.

She turned around in annoyance and smashed the plastic bottle in her hand against my head. "Are you crazy? I already told you I don't have any money. Why are you still doing this to me?"

I stared at her while gasping for air.

Rainwater dripped from her hair. She looked both scared and angry.

With trembling hands, I pulled out my wallet. It was soaked from the rain.

I took out every dollar inside and shoved the cash into her hand.

"Save me. Please take me to the hospital. All this money is yours."

Chloe froze.

She looked at the money, then at me lying on the ground.

The fear in her eyes disappeared. Instead, she looked me over like I was something on display.

Chloe crouched down and checked my breathing like she'd done it many times before. Then she stuffed the money into her pocket.

"Boss, why didn't you say that sooner? I can carry you, but it'll cost you 50 dollars per mile. You'll have to pay the ambulance bill yourself, too. This much money won't be enough!"

The rain grew heavier, and I couldn't stop shaking from the cold.

My instinct to survive made me suddenly open my eyes and grab her hand tightly.

I begged her with all the strength I had left. "Save me... I'll give you... Money..."

Chloe stopped moving. Then she lowered her head and brought her thin face close to mine. "How much more can you give me?"

"100... 100 dollars..."

But before I could finish, I passed out and collapsed into her arms.

Chloe froze for a second, then quickly dragged me into the back seat of her old electric scooter. As she pulled me in, she kept muttering to herself, "What can 100 dollars even buy? You look rich and dressed in fancy clothes, but you're actually so cheap. Still, that watch on your wrist looks like it's worth a lot of money... Fine, I'll save you for now. If you can't pay your medical bills, I'll take the watch instead!"

When I woke up, I was staring at the same familiar ceiling. The smell of disinfectant was still sharp. "You're finally awake." I heard a cool, hoarse voice beside me. I turned my head and saw Chloe sitting by my bed. She had lost a lot of weight, and there were dark circles under her eyes, but her eyes were brighter than ever. "I'm still alive?" Chloe nodded and handed me a cup of warm water. "Yes. The doctor said you were lucky. You only broke a few ribs and had a mild concussion. You'll be fine after a few months of rest." I took a sip of water to soothe my dry throat. "Where's Samantha?" Chloe answered calmly, "She's been charged with attempted murder. With all the other crimes the Baileys committed, she'll probably spend the rest of her life in prison." I looked at Chloe with mixed feelings. "You..." She raised an eyebrow. "What?""Why did you stay with me?" She could have taken the money I'd given her, left with her family, and started a new life while I was unconscious

The Baileys collapsed faster than anyone could have imagined. They came under a tax investigation, their assets were frozen, and their business partners began cutting ties with them. They were pushed out from every direction. No one at school dared to criticize Chloe anymore.Jason was also moved to the best hospital room. After a team of top specialists from around the world examined him, his condition began to improve. It seemed like everything had finally been settled. That afternoon, I took Chloe for a walk along the downtown shopping district. It was a beautiful, sunny day. She was dressed simply, just like she had been when we first met. She quietly walked beside me.There was about half a step between us, and neither of us said a word.My heartbeat was steady, and the system hadn't given me a warning in a long time.I realized that if Chloe stayed within my sight, my health could remain at a safe level even without physical contact. My dependence on her seemed to be shifting fro

Samantha's revenge came faster than I expected, and it was even more vicious. The next day, the school forum and local social media were filled with dirt about Chloe."Poor Girl Marries Into a Rich Family for Money, but Her Brother Is Actually a Gambler Buried in Debt!"The posts looked very convincing. They not only exposed Chloe's home address but also posted photos of her brother, Jason Rivera, lying in a hospital bed with his leg in a cast.Under the photos were fake casino debt-collection notices.Chloe quickly became the target of online hate. People called her a family-obsessed fool and a scheming gold digger. When I found her, she was sitting alone by the apartment window, staring at her phone.I walked over and was about to take her phone away when she grabbed my wrist instead. "Boss, can your lawyers put them in prison?"Chloe's voice was very calm.I froze for a moment before answering, "Yes. Defamation and spreading false rumors can carry a prison sentence of up to three ye

Chloe's body trembled violently. She lifted her head and forced herself to hold back her tears. I could clearly feel her trembling through my hand under her chin. For a moment, time stood still, and every eye was on us. But then my heart suddenly clenched, and that awful stabbing pain came back. "Warning! The target is experiencing extreme emotional distress. Host's health has rapidly dropped to 20%!" "Calm the target immediately, or the heart will stop!" "Damn you, system!" I cursed silently before reaching out and tightly grabbing Chloe's cold hand. Her whole body shook, and she looked at me in shock. "Physical contact established. Health recovering..." Warmth flowed into my body, easing the pain a little. Samantha looked even more pleased when she saw what I did. "Nathaniel, see? She's a liar. She'll do anything for money. Staying with her will only get you hurt!"Charles quickly joined in. "Nathaniel, wake up. A girl like her isn't worth everything you're giving her." I

My relationship with Chloe became the biggest gossip at school the very next day. There were already more than 1,000 posts on the school forum."Breaking! The campus prince dumps his rich beauty for a poor underdog.""Analysis: Who is Nathaniel's new flame, Chloe?"The photos showed me cleaning Chloe's wound outside the school building. The angle made the picture look far more intimate than it really was.The comments were even harsher."How shameless. Chloe would really do anything for money.""She must have seduced Mr. Nathaniel. Girls like her are experts at playing the victim.""Poor Samantha. That girl actually stole her boyfriend."Chloe sat across from me, eating takeout from a five-star hotel while scrolling through her phone. She was completely absorbed in the comments and kept clicking her tongue. "Boss, look. They're calling me a man-stealer. They're also saying I brainwashed you."Chloe looked up at me. "Boss, they've ruined my reputation. Don't you think you should compens

The scene outside the school building ended with Samantha and Charles running away in a panic.I leaned against Chloe and greedily soaked up the warmth that kept me alive. The feeling of my health slowly rising was like an addictive drug.Chloe supported me and muttered, "Boss, this counts as a work injury, right? If it does, I want you to cover my medical bills, emotional damages, and a bonus for bravely stepping in just now. So you need to pay me more."I looked down at the blood still seeping from her forehead and suddenly felt annoyed. "Shut up."I pulled a handkerchief from my pocket and roughly pressed it against her wound.Chloe's body instantly went stiff. Even her breathing seemed to stop for a moment.I froze when I realized how close we were. I could even smell the faint, clean scent of soap on her.The system spoke. "Damn! You finally get it! Health recovery speed increased..."After hearing that, I unconsciously softened my touch. "Does it still hurt?""No... It doesn't."
